Richard WOOLVEN (1651-1710)

and Ann CRIPPS (c1650-1707)

Richard Woolven and Ann Cripps were my 8x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)   They married sometime before or about 1672 and settled in West Grinstead, Sussex.

Richard Woollvin may have been baptised on 26 November 1651 in West Grinstead and have been the son of John Woolvin (c1618-1658) and possibly Leah Lancaster (c1620-?).  He was buried on 17 October 1710 in West Grinstead and it was noted in the burial register that he was a widower.  He left a will dated 8 February 1709/10, at which time he was a yeoman of Copyhold in West Grinstead.  On 9 December 1700, Richard Woolvin in West Grinstead was said to be in occupation of a messuage or tenement, barn and lands called Laits Farm, containing 101 acres, 2 rods and 1 perch.  A Richard Woolvin was baptised on 22 April 1627 in West Grinstead, the son of Ralfe Woolvin (1599-1667), but that Richard may have been buried in West Grinstead on 6 December 1678.  Another Richard Woollvin was baptised on 26 November 1651 in West Grinstead, the son of John Woolvin.

Ann Cripps date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  She was the daughter of Thomas Cripps (c1610-1670) and Mary Wales (1615-1657).  She was buried on 4 June 1707 in West Grinstead.  As Ann Woolvin she was mentioned in her brother John Cripps will of 1675, by which she was to receive a legacy of five pounds.  She may have been baptised on either Cowfold, Sussex or Shermanbury, Sussex, but there is a gap in both registers; Cowfold from 1642-48 and Shermanbury 1641-53.

Richard Woolven and Ann Cripps had 9 known children:

  1. John Woolvyn was baptised on 30 May 1673 in West Grinstead.  He was mentioned in his uncle John Cripps's will by which he was to receive a legacy of five pounds when he reached the age of 21 years.

  2. Richard Woollvin was baptised on 4 March 1674/5 in West Grinstead.  He married Mary Grover in 1699.  (They have their own page.)

  3. Mary Woolvyn was baptised on 8 February 1676/7 in West Grinstead.  She was named in her father's will as the wife of John Hewett and was left a legacy of 5 shillings.

Mary married John Hewett on 7 April 1706 in Thakeham.

  4. Ann Woolvyn was baptised on 28 January 1678/9 in West Grinstead. Ann was named in her father's will as the wife of Lukc Croucher and left a legacy of 5 shillings.

Ann married Luke Croucher on 24 April 1701 in Shipley.  They were both then servants of West Grinstead.

  5. Jane Woolvyn was baptised on 14 February 1680/1 in West Grinstead.  She may have married James Botting in 1715.  (They have their own page.)

  6. Thomas Woolvyn was baptised on 20 July 1684 in West Grinstead and probably died as an infant.

  7. Thomas Woolvyn, my 7x Great Grandfather, may have been baptised twice, first on 20 July 1686 and then on 7 September 1686 in West Grinstead.  He married Ann Mitchell in 1716.  (They have their own page.)

  8. James Woolven was baptised on 15 October 1689 in West Grinstead.

  9. Sarah Woolvyn was baptised on 17 November 1692 in West Grinstead.  She may have married John Sommersell on 31 October 1715 in Itchingfield.  She was then of Ashurst.
