Ralph WOOLVIN (1559-1667)

and Mary WHITINGTON (c1600-1668)

Ralph Wolvin and Mary Whitington married on 16 January 1619/20 at the parish church of St. George in West Grinstead, Sussex.

Ralph Wolvyne was baptised on 6 August 1599 in West Grinstead.  He was the son of John Wolvine (c1550-1615) and Mary Homfrie (c1555-1612).  He was buried on 21 May 1667 in West Grinstead.  Ralph was mentioned in his father's will.  In his own will he mentioned sons John (and 4 of his children), Richard, Ralph and Thomas, and daughter Jane wife of John Millam, son Thomas Butchers (he was son-in-law) and his 5 children, wife Mary and loving friends John Woolvin of Liminster (he may have been the son of Ralph's brother Richard) and John Slaughter of Henfield.  Ralph was a witness to the will of Richard Lancaster of West Grinstead on 30 September 1646, at which time he made his mark.  As Ralph Woollvin he signed the 1641/2 Protestation Returns in West Grinstead.

Mary Whitingtonís date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  She may have been buried on 14 July 1668 in West Grinstead.

Ralph Wollvin and Mary Whitington had the following children:

  1. John Woolvin was mentioned as the eldest son in his father's will.  He may have been born in about 1620.  He was also mentioned in the 1684 will of his brother Ralph.  John may have occupied the property known as Cloathoales (or Clothalls Farm) in West Grinstead - need to check for any manorial records for details of property transfer.

There was another John Woolvin of similar age, or a couple of years younger, who married Leah Lancaster in 1639.

Ann Woollvin wife of John, was buried on 7 December 1657 in West Grinstead.  Sarah Woollvin wife of John, was buried on 22 November 1658 in West Grinstead.  I think John was married to Ann and that Sarah was his daughter rather than his wife.

John had the the following children:

    1. Ralph Woollvin was baptised on 16 September 1649 in West Grinstead.  He was mentioned in his grandfather's 1667 will.  He, along with 5 unnamed children, were also mentioned in his uncle Ralph's will of 1684.  Ralph was a weaver.  He was buried on 24 August 1690 in West Grinstead.  (A Ruth Woolvin born in 1658 married a weaver.  She was also said to a daughter of John Woolvin, but which John?  However, neither Ralph who died in 1667 nor his son Ralph in 1684 mentioned Ruth in their wills, whereas they did name 4 children of John, which makes me think Ruth was not part of this family.)

Ralph married Elizabeth Batchelor on 25 January 1671/2 in West Grintead.

Elizabeth may have been baptised on 28 March 1652 in West Grinstead and have been the daughter of Thomas Batchelor.

Ralph and Elizabeth had the following children:

      1. Ralfe Woollvin was baptised on 8 December 1674 in West Grinstead.

      2. An unnamed child mentioned in the 1684 will of Ralph.

      3. An unnamed child mentioned in the 1684 will of Ralph.

      4. Mary Woolvyn was baptised on 14 February 1680/1 in West Grinstead.

      5. Sarah Woolvyn was baptised on 5 August 1683 in West Grinstead.

      6. Thomas Woolvyn was baptised on 10 December 1686 in West Grinstead.

      7. William Woolvyn was baptised on 22 December 1689 in West Grintead.

    2. John Woollvin was baptised on 24 October 1651 in West Grinstead.  The baptism register recorded that his father was from Cloathoales.

    3. William Woolvin was baptised on 8 December 1654 in West Grinstead.  He was mention in his grandfather's will and that of his uncle Ralph.

    4. Sarah Woolvin was baptised on 19 January 1655/6 in West Grinstead.  Sarah Woollvin wife of John, was buried on 22 November 1658 in West Grinstead.  Might she have been daughter of John rather than wife?

    5. Mary Woolvin was baptised on 4 March 1656/7 in West Grinstead.  She was mentioned in her grandfather's will and that of her uncle Ralph.

  2. Mary Woolvin was baptised on 18 August 1622 in West Grinstead.

  3. Joan Woolvin was baptised on 12 December 1624 in West Grinstead.

As Joane Woolven she married Thomas Butcher on 30 May 1647 in Shipley.

Thomas may have been baptised on 3 April 1625 in West Grinstead, the son of Phillip Butcher alias Piper (?-1659) and Cicely Parson.  As Thomas Butcher alias Piper he was buried on 8 June 1667 in West Grinstead.  (Phillip Butcher was a witness to the 1646 will of Richard Lancaster.)

As a widow of Ashurst, Joan Butcher alias Piper may have married William Hill by licence on 28 September 1671 in Ashurst.  Their marriage licence was issued on 21 September 1671 by the Archdeaconry of Lewes which also recorded that William was a widower of Henfield.  However, William and Joan had 3 children baptised in 1672, 1674 and 1676, which I think would make this Joan to old to have been their mother.  Therefore, I don't think 1624 Joan married William, but I could be wrong.  William was born in 1638 and died in 1691.

Thomas and Joan had the following children:

    1. Frances Butcher was baptised on 12 March 1647/8 in West Grinstead.

    2. Elizabeth Butcher was baptised on 22 September 1649 in West Grinstead.

The Sussex marriage index records that an Elizabeth Butcher married Thomas Somersell on 25 November 1675 in Henfield.  But, I think his name was James Somersall and that he was mentioned in the will of her uncle Ralph.

James and Elizabeth had the following children:

      1. Ann Sumersell was baptised on 11 February 1676/7 in West Grinstead.

      2. Elisabeth Sumersell was baptised on 17 October 1679 in West Grinstead.

      3. Phillip Sumersell was baptised on 10 June 1682 in West Grinstead.

      4. James Sumersell was baptised on 4 October 1685 in West Grinstead.

      5. Thomas Sumersell was baptised on 25 September 1687 in West Grinstead.

      6. John Sumersell was baptised on 5 November 1689 in West Grinstead.

    3. Mary Butcher was baptised on 21 December 1651 in West Grinstead.  She married William Paye in 1677.  They were mentioned in her uncle Ralph's will.

    4. Joane Butcher was baptised on 13 March 1653/4 in West Grinstead.

    5. Philip Butcher was baptised on 17 June 1656 in West Grinstead.  He was mentioned in his uncle Ralph Woolvin's will of 1684.  He may have married Mary Ascall on 16 May 1683 at St. Peter the Great in Chichester, Sussex.  Mary was then of West Grinstead.

    6. Thomas Butcher was baptised on 7 August 1663 in West Grintead.

  4. Richard Woolvin was baptised on 22 April 1627 in West Grinstead.  He was mentioned in his father's 1667 will as the second son.  He may have been buried in West Grinstead on 6 December 1678.  His elder and yougest brothers were mentioned in the 1684 will of their brother Ralph, but Richard was not, and so I am assuming this was because Richard was the one buried in 1678.  There was another Richard Woolven who married Ann Cripps sometime before 1672 and settled in West Grinstead, where he was buried in 1710.  And yet another Richard Woolvin (?-1674) who married Ann Best before 1657.

  5. Jane Woolvin was baptised on 26 April 1629 in West Grinstead.  She was mentioned in her father's will as the wife of John Millam.  Jane married John Millam alias Thousand on 25 May 1662 in Shipely.

  6. Ralfe Woolvin was baptised on 27 November 1631 in West Grinstead.  He was mentioned in his father's will.  He was buried on 29 April 1684 in West Grinstead.  Ralph left a will dated 24 April 1684 (click here to read my transcript).

Ralfe may have married Ann, as Ann Woolvin wife of Ralfe was buried on 4 January 1670/1 in West Grinstead.

Ralph may then have married Alice Soale widow.  Alice was named as the loving wife of Ralph in his will, along with daughter-in-law Elizabeth Soale and son-in-law John Soale who was appointed an overseer of Ralph's will.

A transcript of the West Grinstead baptism register records that Ralfe and Anne were the parents of Jane Woolvyne who was baptised on 4 February 1680/1.  Might Anne have been Alice?

An Alice Woolvyn married Thomas Floyd from Woodmancote on 24 November 1685 in West Grinstead.

  7. Thomas Wolvin was baptised on 2 February 1635/6 in West Grinstead.  He was mentioned in his father's will as the youngest son.  He may have been buried on 21 July 1684 in West Grinstead.

Thomas married Dorothy Freeman on 11 October 1666 in Findon, Sussex.

Dorothy was baptised on 9 April 1637 in Shipley, Sussex and was the daughter of William Freeman (c1610-1677).  She was mentioned in her father's will as the wife of Thomas Woolvin.  Might she have been buried on 20 December 1715 in Henfield?

Thomas and Dorothy had the following children:

    1. Dorothie Woollvin was baptised on 15 April 1667 in West Grinstead and buried there on 11 May 1667.

    2. Mary Wolvin was baptised on 16 October 1668 in Warminghurst.  She was mentioned in the will of her uncle Ralph Woolvin.  Mary married John Lindfield on 22 June 1693 at the Warminghurst Quaker chapel.  She was then said to be the daughter of Thomas Wolvin a husbandman of Worminhurst, whilst John was the son of William Lindfield a husabandman of Horsham.
