John WOOLVEN (1827-?)

and Ann FAIRS (1834-?)

John Woolvin and Ann Fairs married by banns on 16 October 1853 in Cowfold, Sussex.  John was then a bachelor and a labourer, whilst Ann was a spinster and a minor.  Their fathers were named in the marriage register as John Woolvin and Joseph Fairs who were both labourer.  The witnesses to their marriage were James Stoffell and Eliza ???ers.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

John Woolven was baptised on 4 November 1827 in Shipley, Sussex.  He was the son of John Woolven and Mary Francis.

Ann Fairs was baptised on 23 November 1834 in Cowfold.  She was the daughter of Joseph Fairs (1800-1873) and Philadelphia Richards (c1799-1867), and the granddaughter of Richard Fairs and Elizabeth Woolven (1766-?).  At the time of the 1841 census she was 6 years old and living with her parents in Cowfold.

When the 1881 census was recorded the couple and their son Alfred were living at Henfield Road Restaurant in Cowfold.  John was then an Agricultural Labourer.

John Woolven and Ann Fairs had 8 known children:

  1. John Woolven was baptised on 2 April 1854 in Cowfold.

  2. James Woolven was baptised on 27 January 1856 in Cowfold.

  3. Ann Woolven was baptised on 29 November 1857 in Cowfold.

  5. Mary Woolven was baptised on 24 August 1862 in Cowfold.

  6. Emily Woolven was baptised on 1 January 1864 in Cowfold.  She married Abel Ellis in the third quarter of 1884 in the Dorking registration district.

  7. Alfred Woolven was baptised on 17 February 1867 in Cowfold.  He was a Plasterer's Labourer in 1881.

  8. Harriet Woolven was baptised on 10 January 1868 in Cowfold.
