John WOOLVEN (c1752-1815)

and Sarah LELLIOT (1755-1823)

John Woolven and Sarah Lelliott married on 24 January 1782 in Woodmancote, Sussex.  John was then a bachelor of Nuthurst and Sarah a spinster.  The witnesses to the marriage were William Terry and John Evans.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

John Woolven may have been born about 1752.  He may have died aged 63 years and have been buried on 8 September 1815 in Cowfold, Sussex.  Might he have been the son of John Woollvin (1714-1777) and Susanna Tirrell (c1714-1804)?  John and Susanna had a son named John baptised in 1744.  There was a John Woolven baptised on 15 February 1756 in West Grinstead, Sussex the son of John Woolven (1725-?) and Mary Comber.

Sarah Lilliot was born on 2 December and baptised on 18 December 1755 in Henfield, Sussex.  She was the daughter of William Lilliot (1725-1766) and Jane Slatter (c1730-?).  She may have died aged 70 years and have been buried on 3 May 1823 in Cowfold.

John Woolven and Sarah Lelliott had 8 known children:

  1. Jane Woolven was baptised 4 November 1782 in West Grinstead.  She died aged 84 years and was buried on 26 January 1866 in Warnham.  The burial register noted that she was from the Horsham workhouse.

Jane married James Willard on 6 September 1808 in West Grinstead, Sussex.  They were both then of West Grinstead.  The witnesses to their marriage were Susanna Stringer and William Gratwick.

James was baptised on 13 March 1785 in Warnham, Sussex and was the son of William Willard (1757-1831) and Leah Jay (1761-1817).  He died aged 73 years and was buried on 11 November 1856 in Warnham.

  2. James Woolvin was baptised on 2 July 1784 in Cowfold and buried there on 16 April 1785.  The baptism and burial register recorded that his parents were paupers.

  3. Henry Woolvin was baptised on 4 September 1785 in Cowfold and buried there on 8 November 1785.  The baptism and burial register recorded that his parents were paupers.

  4. William Woolvin was baptised on 7 March 1785 in Cowfold and buried there on 13 February 1789.  The baptism and burial register recorded that his parents were paupers.

  5. Sarah Woolvin was baptised on 6 April 1788 in Cowfold.

Sarah may have married Jesse Parsons by banns on 11 April 1815 in Cowfold.  He was a bachelor and she a spinster.  The witnesses to their marriage were James Richardson and William Hills.

Jesse died aged 72 years in Lower Beeding and was buried on 29 June 1856 in Cowfold, therefore, he was born about 1784.  When the 1851 census was recorded the couple were living at Crabtree in Lower Beeding.  Jessie was a 69 year old pauper and Sarah was 65, therefore, she was born about 1786.  A Sarah Parsons from Cuckfield died aged 82 years and was buried on 31 October 1868 in Cowfold.

Another Sarah Woolvin was baptised on 24 May 1785 in Cowfold, the daughter of John Woolvin and Mary.  And a Sarah Woolven married James Peirce by banns on 3 January 1814 in Cowfold.  James was a bachelor and Sarah a spinster.  The witnesses to their marriage were John Martin and R. Peirce.  In 1851 this couple were living at Mockford in Cowfold.  James was 66 years old and Sarah 65, therefore, she was also born about 1786.  A Sarah Pierce died aged 67 years and was buried on 14 June 1852 in Cowfold.

  6. Ann Woolvin was baptised on 14 June 1789 in Cowfold and the baptism register noted that her parents were paupers.  She died aged 91 years and was buried on 30 June 1880 in Cowfold.  She married James Richardson in 1808.  (They have their own page.)

  7. Richard Woolvin was baptised on 27 November 1791 in Cowfold and the baptism register noted that his parents were paupers.  He died aged 79 years and was buried on 29 April 1869 in Cowfold.  When the 1841 census was recorded he was said to have been 42 years and living with his sister Ann in Cowfold.  In 1851 he was an unmarried 61 year cooper and living with his elder sister, Ann and her family.

  8. Mary Woolvin was baptised on 29 October 1797 in Cowfold.
