John WOOLVEN (1725-?)

and Mary COMBER (?-?)

John Woolven and Mary Comber married on 31 May 1749 in West Grinstead, Sussex.  They were both then of West Grinstead.  (They were not my direct ancestors.  John was the brother of my 6x Great Grandfather.)

John Woolvin was baptised on 10 March 1725 in West Grinstead, Sussex.  He was the son of Thomas Woolvin (1686-1757) and Ann Mitchell.  John may have been buried on 2 July 1781 in West Grinstead, but the burial register only records his name and no other identifying details.  Or he may have been buried on 4 February 1797 in West Grinstead, but again, only a name was recorded.  However, he, or his son John, gave consent to daughter Zilpah's marriage in September 1789.

Mary Comber's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.

A removal order was issued on 12 January 1761 in respect of John Woolven, Mary Woolven and children:  Ann aged 9, 8 year old Zelsa, Sara 6, John 4, Edward 3 and 11 month old James, from West Grinstead to Billingshurst, or vice versa.

John Woolven and Mary Comber had 12 known children:

  1. Ann Woolvin was baptised on 25 March 1750 in Billingshurst, Sussex.  (A transcript of the register has the surname as Woolcon.)

  2. Zilphah Woolvin was baptised on 25 August 1751 in West Grinstead.

  3. Sarah Woolven was baptised on 5 January 1754 in West Grinstead.

Did she marry James Miles on 26 June 1779 in Cowfold?  There was another Sarah Woolven baptised in West Grinstead in 1759.

  4. John Woolven was baptised on 13 February 1756 in West Grinstead.

John may have married Sarah Lelliot on 24 January 1782 in Woodmancote, Sussex, but this would seem unlikely.

  5. Edward Woolven was baptised on 7 May 1758 in West Grinstead.

Edward married Ann Stringer by banns on 17 June 1779 in West Grinstead.  The witnesses to their marriage were William Gratwick and James Stiles.

  6. James Woolven was baptised on 2 March 1760 in West Grinstead.

  7. Mary Woolven was baptised on 7 March 1762 in West Grinstead.

  8. Zilpah Woolven was baptised on 25 June 1769 in West Grinstead

Zilpah married Henry Elliott by licence on 17 September 1789 in Steyning.  The licence recorded that he was a 22 year old bachelor and Husbandman of Steyning, whilst Zilpha was a 19 year old spinster of Steyning who married with the consent of John Woolvin of West Grinstead.

  9. Ann Woolven, daughter of John and Mary, was buried on 1 August 1771 in West Grinstead.

  10. Thomas Woolven was baptised on 21 February 1773 in West Grinstead and buried there on 4 May 1773.

  11. Jane Woolven, daughter of John, was buried on 29 May 1777 in West Grinstead.

  12. Thomas Woolven was baptised on 3 February 1778 in West Grinstead and buried there on 9 July 1780.
