William WOOLGAR (c1593-1649)

and Mary PAGE (1605-1652)

 

William Woolgar and Mary Page were my 9x Great Grandparents.  They married on 14 February 1621/2 in Ringmer, Sussex.  William was of Henfield.

William Woolgar was born before 1600 and probably around about 1593/4.  (The IGI gives that he was born about 1601 in Little Horsted, Sussex.)  He was the son of 5 264 Stephen Woolgar (1569-1638) and 5 264 Jane Holney (c1572-1601).  William was of Brookside in Henfield.  He died on 13 June and was buried on 15 June 1649 in Henfield.  He did not leave a Will, but Letters of Adminstration were granted to his widow Mary on 28 October 1650.  He was a Churchwarden and an Overseer of the poor in Henfield.  He was a leader in a Chancery dispute with the Bishop of Chichester in 1619.  He was appointed an overseeer of the will of Ann Gratwick, widow of John Gratwick of Pookes in Shermanbury.  Ann's will was dated 30 June and proved on 15 August 1640.

 

The signature of William Woolgar (c1593-1649) as it appears on the Protestation of Henfield against the misgovernment of Charles I in 1641.  He was one of the chief signatories.

Mary Page was baptised on 16 June 1605 in Little Horsted, Sussex.  She was the daughter of John Page and Elnor Marten.  She died 26 March and was buried 28 March 1652 in Henfield.  I have no further details about her possible siblings and parents other than they married on 16 April 1605 in Little Horsted and that her father was of South Malling, Sussex.

 

William Woolgar and Mary Page had 6 known children:

  1. Stephen Woolgar was baptised on 25 April 1624 in Ringmer.

    Stephen married Elizabeth.

    Stephen and Elizabeth had the following child:

    1. Elizabeth Woolgar was born on 29 September 1654 and baptised on 9 October 1654 in Henfield.

      Elizabeth married John Boundee on 11 April 1678 in Henfield.

      John was born on 17 March 1654/5 and baptised on 24 March 1654/5 in Henfield.  He was the son of John Boundee (1629-1674) and Mary Bettesworth.

  2. Thomas Woolgar was baptised on 20 May 1628 in Ringmer.

  3. Mary Woolgar was baptised on 27 July 1630 in Ringmer.

  4. Ann Woolgar was baptised on 3 February 1633/4 in Henfield.

  5. William Woolgar was baptised on 10 September 1637 in Henfield and buried there on 15 June 1644.

  6. Samuel Woolgar, my 8x Great Grandfather, was baptised on 30 April 1643 in Henfield.  He married Grace Newnhame.  (They have their own page.)
