Thomas WOOLGAR (c1540-1593)

and Catherine BANESTER (c1545-?)


Thomas Woolgar and Catherine Banester were my 11x Great Grandparents.  They married on 15 September 1566 in Eastbourne, Sussex.

Thomas Woolgar 's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  He was the son of Thomas Woolgar (c1515-1577) and Margaret Smythe.  Thomas died in Eastbourne in May 1593.  His Will was dated 9 April 1593 and proved on 16 May 1593.

Catherine Banester's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  She was the daughter of John Banester and Emlyn.


Thomas Woolgar and Catherine Banester had 6 known children:

  1. Stephen Woolgar, my 10x Great Grandfather, was baptised on 10 June 1569 in Eastbourne.  He married 3 times, firstly to Jane Holney in 1593.  (They have their own page.)

  2. Agnes Woolgar was baptised on 22 February 1573 in Eastbourne.  She married Edward Michell on 15 February 1594/5 in Henfield.

  3. Thomas Woolgar was under 21 when his father died in 1593.  He married twice.  Firstly to Daritie Washer on 3 December 1595 in Hove, Sussex, and then to Joan Bridger.  She was buried on 22 April 1610.  Thomas and Joan had 2 known children:

    1. Joanne Woolgar was baptised on 25 July 1598 in Hove.

    2. Ann Woolgar was baptised on 31 July 1600 in Hove.

  4. John Woolgar was under 21 in 1593.  He may have married twice.  Firstly to Margarte Essone on 20 May 1598 in Edburton, Sussex.  The couple may have had the following children:

    1. Jane Woolgar was baptised on 24 February 1598/9 in Edburton.

    2. John Woolgar was baptised on 10 February 1600/1 in Edburton.

    3. William Woolgar was baptised on 28 February 1601/2 in Edburton.

    4. Margaret Woolgar was baptised on 4 September 1603 in Edburton.

    5. Dorothie Woolgar was baptised on 2 June 1605 in Edburton.

    6. Elizabeth Woolgar was baptised on 23 August 1606 in Edburton and buried there on 24 August 1606.

    7. Elizabeth Woolgar was baptised on 29 September 1607 in Edburton.

    8. Harrie Woolgar was baptised on 5 June 1608 in Edburton.

    9. Thomas Woolgar was baptised on 2 February 1611/2 in Edburton.

    John may next have married Alice Wood on 12 Juen 1615 in Henfield.

  5. Edward Woolgar was under 21 in 1593.  He married Alice Mitchell on 15 February 1605/6.

  6. Alice Woolgar was under 21 when her father died in 1593.
