Stephen WOOLGAR (1820-?)

and Harriet EDWARDS (1826-1901)

Stephen Woolgar and Harriet Edwards married by banns on 7 November 1857 in Shipley, Sussex.  Stephen was a bachelor and labourer and Harriet a spinster.  Their fathers were named as Stephen Woolgar and James Edwards who were both labouerers.  The witnesses to their marriage were Henry Edwards and Caroline Edwards.  (They were not my direct ancestors.  Stephen was the nephew of my 4x Great Grandfather, William Woolgar.)

Stephen Woolgar was baptised on 10 June 1820 in Henfield, Sussex.  He was the son of Stephen Woolgar (1797-1862) and Sarah Hards (1796-1862).

Harriet Edwards was baptised on 17 September 1826 in West Grinstead, Sussex.  She was the daughter of James Edwards (1796-?) and Sophia Ridley (1792-1859).  Harriet died aged 74 years and her death was registered in the first quarter of 1901 in the Steyning registration district.

In 1871 the couple and their daughter Matilda were living at Cannons in Henfield.  Stephen was a 50 year old agricultural labourer and Harriet was 44.  Stephen gave his place of birth as Henfield and Harriet as Shipley.

When the 1881 census was recorded the couple were living at Cannons in Henfield.  He was a 62 year old agricultural labourer and she was 54.  Stephen's place of birth was given as Henfield and Harriet's as West Grinstead.  Also lodging with them were the family of their daughter Matilda.

At the time of the 1891 census the couple were still at Cannons in Henfield.  Stephen was a 71 year old agricultural labourer and Harriet was 63.  The family of their daughter was also at Cannons.

By 1901, Stephen was an 80 year old widower and agricultural labourer, living at Cannons.

Stephen Woolgar and Harriet Edwards had 1 known child:

  1. Matilda Woolgar was baptised on 12 June 1859 in Henfield.  She married David Dowlen in 1875.  (They have their own page.)
