Stephen WOOLGAR (1797-1862)

and Sarah HARDS (1796-1862)

 

Stephen Woolgar and Sarah Hards married by banns on 18 March 1820 in Henfield, Sussex.  They were both of Henfield and both made their X marks.  The witnesses to their marriage were 5 38 James Stillaway and 5 38 Frances Stillaway who both made their X marks.  (They were not my direct ancestors.  Stephen was the brother of my 4x Great Grandfather, William Woolgar.)

Stephen Woolgar was baptised on 1 October 1797 in Henfield.  He was the son of Samuel Woolgar (1755-1839) and Mary Mitchell (c1759-1841).  He died at Frogs Hole, Henfield on 31 July and was buried on 3 August 1862 in Henfield.  Stephen was an agricultural labourer and a bargeman.

Sarah Hards was baptised on 4 December 1796 in Edburton and was the daughter of John Hards and Mary.  She died on 16 September 1875 at Frogs Hole and was buried on 19 September 1875 in Henfield.

In 1851 the family were living at Frogs Hole.

When the 1861 census was recorded the couple together with 2 of their children (James and Abraham), 14 year old granddaughter Sarah Woolgar, 60 year old widow and visitor Elizabeth Woolgar and unmarried 29 year old visitor George Woolgar were living at Frogs Hole in Henfield.  Stephen was a 63 year old agricultural labourer and gave his place of birth as Henfield.  Sarah was 64 and said she was born in Edburton.

 

Stephen Woolgar and Sarah Hards had 11 known children:

  1. Stephen Woolgar was baptised on 10 June 1820 in Henfield.  He married Harriet Edwards in 1857.  (They have their own page.)

  2. Catherine Woolgar was baptised on 23 December 1821 in Henfield.  She died on 30 November 1851 in Henfield.

    Before her marriage Catherine had an illegitimate son:

    1. William Woolgar was born on 3 September 1840 and baptised on 11 October 1840 in Henfield.  He died on 10 July 1921 and was buried on 14 July in Southease, Sussex.  William married Jemima Eager.

    Catherine married William Browning on 1 August 1841 in Henfield.

    William was baptised on 11 March 1811 in Henfield and was the son of Richard Browning (1781-1863) and Mary (c1786-1875).  He was buried on 18 August 1888 in Upper Beeding.

  3. Henry Woolgar was baptised on 14 September 1823 in Henfield.  He was buried there on 21 May 1888.

    Henry married Frances Kensett on 30 September 1858 in Henfield.

    Frances was baptised on 19 October 1828 in Henfield and was the daughter of William Kinsett and Elizabeth Standing.

    Henry and Frances had 12 known children:

  4. George Woolgar was baptised on 26 February 1826 in Henfield and buried there on 27 December 1827.  He died aged 1 year and 11 months.

  5. Mary Ann Woolgar was baptised on 21 September 1828 in Henfield.  She died on 29 January 1901.

    Before her marriage Mary Ann had an illegitimate daughter:

    1. Sarah Ann Woolgar was baptised on 10 January 1847 in Upper Beeding.  In 1861 she was 14 years old and living with her maternal grandparents.

    Mary Ann married Philip Lelliott on 18 August 1849 in Henfield.  He was the son of Philip Lelliott (1804-1892) and Hannah Emsley (1806-1872).

  6. Thomas Woolgar was baptised on 26 September 1830 in Henfield.  He died aged 20 years on 14 July and was buried on 18 July 1851 in Henfield.

  7. James Woolgar was baptised on 13 January 1833 in Henfield.  He was buried on 25 March 1907 in Henfield.  At the time of the 1861 census he was an unmarried 28 year old agricultural labourer and living at home.

    James married Ellen Vinall on 26 January 1862 in Henfield.  They were both then of Henfield.  The witnesses to their marriage were Abraham Woolgar and Harriet Vinall.

    Ellen was baptised on 17 July 1836 in Henfield and was the daughter of William Vinall and Louisa Stenning.  She died on 8 November 1898 and was buried on 13 November 1898 in Henfield.

    James and Ellen had 3 known daughters:

    1. Louisa Woolgar was born on 31 May 1864 and baptised on 17 July 1864 in Botolphs.  She died on 11 June 1934 at Crawley Road in Horsham.

      Before her marriage Louisa had an illegitimate son:

      1. Tom Pollard Woolgar born on 19 June 1883 in Henfield, Sussex.  He married Mary Ann Blackman on 30 July 1913 in Newhaven.  She was the daughter of Levi Hards and Harriet Blackman.

      Louisa married Richard Mumnery on 1 December 1888 in West Grinstead, Sussex.

    2. Mary Anna Woolgar was baptised on 6 May 1866 in New Shoreham and buried there on 28 August 1866.

    3. Kate Eliza Woolgar was born on 27 December 1871 in New Shoreham, Sussex and was baptised on 10 August 1873 in Henfield.  She died in 1947.  Kate married George Edward Champion on 25 December 1896 in Henfield.

  8. Reuben Woolgar was baptised on 8 March 1835 in Henfield.  He died aged 18 years and was buried on 14 June 1853 in Henfield.

  9. Harriet Woolgar was born on 8 August 1837 and baptised on 10 September 1837 in Henfield.

  10. Abraham Woolgar was baptised on 20 November 1839 in Henfield.  He died in 1912.  In 1861 he was an unmarried 21 year old agricultural labourer and living with his parents.

    Abraham married Harriet Vinall on 22 November 1862 in Henfield.

    Harriet was baptised on 9 May 1841 in Henfield and was the daughter of William Vinall and Louisa Stenning.

    Abraham and Harriet had 10 known children:
