Stephen WOOLGAR (1712-1791)

and Mary ELSEY (1716-1788)

 

Stephen Woolgar and Mary Elsey were my 6x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They married on 27 December 1738 in Horsham, Sussex.

Stephen Woolgar was born on 29 April and baptised on 28 May 1712 in Henfield.  He was the son of 5 221 William Woolgar (1671-1745) and 5 221 Sarah Hill (1676-1750).  He was buried on 26 September 1791 in Henfield.

Mary Ellsey was baptised on 26 February 1715/6 in Ardingly, Sussex.  She was the daughter of 5 222 John Elsey (1683-1762) and 5 222 Mary Pick (1684-1731).  She was buried 12 October 1788 in Henfield.

 

Stephen Woolgar and Mary Elsey had 7 known children:

  1. John Woolgar was born 15 March and baptised on 28 March 1739/40 in Henfield.

    John married twice.  Firstly to Sarah Muzzall on 10 March 1760 in Henfield.  They were both of Henfield, John was a bachelor and Sarah a spinster.  John signed his name whilst Sarah made her X mark.  The witnesses were Samuel Hards (marked) and William Vinall (signed).

    Sarah was buried on 18 May 1771.

    John and Sarah had 4 known children:

    1. John Woolgar was baptised on 1 August 1762 in Henfield.  He died on 18 June 1770.

    2. Mary Woolgar was baptised on 4 August 1765 in Henfield.  She married John Martin by licence on 25 March 1786 in Henfield.  He was a bachelor and she a spinster.

    3. Sarah Woolgar was baptised on 20 March 1768 in Steyning.

    4. Elizabeth Woolgar was baptised on 17 March 1771 in Steyning.

    John then married Elizabeth Walder by banns on 20 April 1772 in Henfield.  John was a widower and Elizabeth a spinster and they were both of Henfield.  John signed his name whilst Elizabeth made her X mark.  The witnesses were John Ifold and William Vinall.

    John and Elizabeth had 12 known children:

    1. Elizabeth Woolgar was baptised on 31 May 1772 in Henfield.

    2. Samuel Woolgar was baptised on 13 February 1775 in Henfield.  He was buried there on 10 June 1825.  Samuel married Mary Hillman on 11 October 1802 in Findon.  The couple had 6 known children.

    3. John Woolgar was baptised on 8 December 1776 in Henfield.  He married Mary Burrell on 22 August 1802 in Henfield.  The couple had 11 known children.

    4. Grace Woolgar was born on 24 January and baptised on 25 July 1799 in Henfield.

    5. Stephen Woolgar was born on 8 July 1781 in Henfield.  He died on 4 February 1869.  He married Hannah Stringer by banns on 4 April 1809 in West Grinstead, Sussex.  They were both then of West Grinstead.  She was born about 1792 and died on 15 January 1875.

    6. Jane Woolgar was baptised on 31 October 1783 in Henfield.

    7. William Woolgar was born on 2 May and baptised on 20 May 1784 in Henfield.

    8. Isaac Woolgar was baptised on 15 July 1787 in Henfield.  He married Ann Baker on 16 June 1813 in Henfield.  Ann was born on 27 December 1787 and was the daughter of William Baker and Elizabeth Smith.  She died on 7 December 1864.  When the 1841 census was recorded the family were living at Elm Grove in Henfield and Isaac was a tanner.  The couple had 4 known children.

    9. Philip Woolgar was born on 26 April 1789.  He died on 29 May 1863.  Philip married twice, firstly to Ann Faulconer on 18 September 1809 in Horsham.  Ann was born 6 December 1780 and died on 9 March 1830.  The couple had 8 known children.  Philip then married Ann Divall by banns on 18 April 1833 in Uckfield, Sussex.  He was then of Plumpton and she of Uckfield.  She was born about 1794 and died on 20 April 1879.

    10. Edward Woolgar was born on 11 November 1792 in Henfield.  He died on 15 July 1860.  He married twice, firstly to Sarah Lish on 7 April 1815 in Henfield.  She was born about 1798 and died on 28 June 1822.  They had 1 known son.  Edward then married Sarah Dewdney on 20 April 1824 in Henfield.  She was born on 1790 and died on 8 March 1862.  They had 1 known son.  On 12 June 1834, Edward and Sarah were witnesses to the marriage of Philip Ward and Frances Pollard.

    11. Abraham Woolgar was born on 24 January 1796 in Henfield.  He died on 14 April 1853.  He married Elizabeth Hollands by banns on 18 April 1827 in Henfield.  He was then a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of Henfield.  She was born in 1804 and died on 14 January 1885.

    12. John Woolgar was born on 27 December 1812.  He married Martha.

  2. Stephen Woolgar was born on 12 September and baptised on 25 September 1741 in Henfield.  He married Hannah Evans in 1761.  (They have their own page.)

  3. Sarah Woolgar was baptised on 30 November 1743 in Woodmancote, Sussex.  She had an illegitimate daughter:

    1. Susan Woolgar was baptised on 27 April 1766 in Henfield.

    Sarah may have married William Chate by banns on 28 July 1766 in Henfield.  William was a widower and Sarah a spinster and they were both of Henfield.  William signed his name whilst Sarah made her X mark.  The witnesses were William Gander and William Vinall.

  4. William Woolgar was baptised on 7 January 1745/6 in Woodmancote.  He died aged 79 years and was buried on 17 February 1825 in West Grinstead.

    William married Jane Nye on 17 July 1774 in Bolney or 19 July 1774 in Henfield.

    William and Jane had the following children:

    1. Mary Woolgar was baptised on 10 December 1776 in West Grinstead.

    2. Stephen Woolgar was baptised on 5 April 1778 in West Grinstead.  He died aged 76 years in Shermanbury and was buried on 22 April 1852 in West Grinstead.

      Stephen married Margaret Packham by licence on 4 March 1801 in Cuckfield.  They were both then of Cuckfield.

      Stephen and Margaret had the following children:

      1. Stephen Woolgar was baptised on 1 August 1802 in West Grinstead.  Stephen married Mary.

      2. Sarah Woolgar was baptised on 22 July 1804 in West Grinstead.

      3. Edward Woolgar was baptised on 3 November 1805 in West Grinstead.

      4. Ann Woolgar was baptised on 10 April 1808 in West Grinstead.

      5. James Woolgar was baptised on 1 January 1811 in West Grinstead.

      6. Sarah Woolgar was baptised on 19 September 1813 in West Grinstead, at which time her father was a labourer.

      7. Mary Woolgar was baptised on 26 June 1818 in West Grinstead, at which time her father was a labourer.  She died as an infant and was buried on 28 October 1818 in West Grinstead.

      8. Elizabeth Woolgar was baptised on 19 December 1819 in West Grinstead, at which time her father was a labourer.

    3. Jenny Woolgar was baptised on 13 February 1780 in West Grinstead.  As Jane Woolger she may have married John Goddard by banns on 21 January 1807 in West Grinstead.  The witnesses to their marriage were Stephen Woolger and William Gratwick.

    4. John Woolgar was baptised on 30 December 1781 in West Grinstead.  John died aged 44 years (as per a transcript) and was buried on 4 February 1828 in West Grinstead.

      John married Ann, possibly Ann Nye by banns on 13 February 1804 in Shermanbury, at which time he was a bachelor and she a spinster.

      John and Ann had the following children:

      1. James Woolgar was baptised on 26 February 1809 in West Grinstead.

      2. Jane Woolgar was baptised on 29 December 1811 in West Grinstead.

      3. Frances Woolgar was baptised on 8 June 1817 in West Grinstead, at which time her father was a labourer.  She died as an infant and was buried on 17 February 1818 in West Grinstead.

      4. Elizabeth Woolgar was baptised on 8 August 1819 in West Grinstead, at which time her father was a labourer.

      5. Emily Woolgar was baptised on 13 May 1821 in West Grinstead, at which time her father was a labourer.

      6. John Woolgar was baptised on 16 February 1823 in West Grinstead, at which time his father was a labourer.

    5. Samuel Woolgar was baptised on 1 January 1784 in West Grinstead.  Samuel married Hannah Stringer in 1806.  (They have their own page.)

    6. Sarah Woolgar was baptised on 4 June 1786 in West Grinstead.

    7. James Woolgar was baptised on 13 July 1788 in West Grinstead.

    8. Sarah Woolgar was baptised on 17 February 1791 in West Grinstead.

    9. Henry Woolgar was baptised on 21 July 1793 in West Grinstead.  Henry married Esther Dale by licence on 20 June 1812 in Wiston, Sussex.  Their marriage licence was issued on 19 June 1812 by the Archdeaconry of Chichester, and recorded that Henry was 19 years old and married with the consent of William Woolgar, who were both labourers of West Grinstead.  Esther was 20 years old and of Wiston, and married with the consent of Elizabeth Dale, widow  Esther died aged 21 years and was buried on 4 July 1814 in West Grinstead.  As a widower, Henry may have married Mary Funnell, spinster, on 14 January 1815 in Brighton, Sussex.

  5. Mary Woolgar was born on 25 February and baptised on 1 March 1748/9 in Henfield.

  6. Samuel Woolgar was born 15 August and baptised on 2 September 1752 in Henfield.  He was buried on 3 March 1753 in Henfield.

  7. Samuel Woolgar, my 5x Great Grandfather, was born on 14 July and baptised on 15 July 1755 in Henfield.  He married 5 134 Mary Mitchell in 1780.  (They have their own page.)
