Stephen WOOLGAR (1569-1638)

and Jane HOLNEY (c1572-1601)

and Elizabeth CANON (?-1627)

and Sarah EEDE (?-1643)

Stephen Woolgar and Jane Holney were my 10x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They married by licence dated 30 July 1593.  He was then described as a yeoman and she a spinster of Henfield, Sussex.  After Jane's death, Stephen married Elizabeth Canon on 14 June 1602 in Henfield.  He then married for a third time to Sarah Eede on 12 May 1628 in Henfield.

Stephen Woolgar was baptised on 10 June 1569 in Eastbourne, Sussex.  He was the son of Thomas Woolgar (c1540-1593) and Catherine Banester (c1545-?).  He was buried on 3 October 1638 in Henfield, Sussex.

Jane Holney may have been born about 1572.  She was the daughter of William Holney (c1540-1609) and Elizabeth (c1550-1610).  Jane was buried in Henfield on 25 September 1601.  She was mentioned in her father's 1609 will as the the first wife of Stephen Woolgar.

Elizabeth Canon's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  She was buried on 9 January 1626/7 in Henfield.

Sarah Eede's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  She was buried on 1 April 1643 in Henfield.

Stephen Woolgar and Jane Holney had 4 known children:

  1. William Woolgar, my 9x Great Grandfather, was born before 1600 and probably around about 1593/4.  He married Mary Page in 1622.  (They have their own page.)

  2. Stephen Woolgar was baptised on 13 January 1597/8 in Henfield and buried there on 27 December 1624.

  3. Thomas Woolgar was baptised on 8 March 1600/1 in Henfield and buried there on 23 June 1610.

  4. Edward Woolgar was baptised on 16 September 1601 in Henfield and buried there on 23 November 1601.

Stephen Woolgar and Elizabeth Canon had 7 known children:

  1. Edward Woolgar was baptised on 18 December 1603 in Henfield.

  2. Jane Woolgar was baptised on 27 January 1605/6 in Henfield.  She was buried on 8 March 1637/8 in Henfield.  Jane married John Goble on 16 June 1628 in Henfield.

  3. Alice Woolgar was baptised on 31 May 1607 in Henfield.  She married John Holcombe alias Ansty by Licence on 30 September 1629 at St. Anne's in Lewes, Sussex.  The marriage licence was also dated 30 September and issued by the Archdeaconry of Lewes.  It recorded that he was a Tanner of Henfield and she a Spinster of Henfield.  Surety for the licence was stood by John himself and John Bexhill a Tanner of Henfield.
