Samuel WOOLGAR
(1755-1839)
and Mary MITCHELL (c1759-1841)

Samuel Woolgar
and
Mary Mitchell
were my 5x Great Grandparents. (Click
here to see their place in my pedigree chart.) They married
by banns on 3 February 1780 in Henfield, Sussex. Samuel was a bachelor of West
Grinstead and Mary a spinster of Henfield. They both made their X marks.
The witnesses to their marriage were
John Ratley
and
William Stanford,
who both signed their names.
Samuel Woolgar
was born on 14 July and baptised on 15 July
1755 in Henfield. He was the son of

Stephen Woolgar
(1712-1791)
and
5
135
Mary Elsey
(1716-1788). He was an agricultural
labourer. He died aged 83 years on 1 March 1839 in Henfield. His cause of
death was Old Age, and his death was registered by his wife who was in
attendance. He was buried on 4 March 1839 in Henfield.
Mary Mitchell
may have been born between April 1759 and
March 1760. She died aged 81 years on 11 March 1841 in Henfield.
Her cause
of death was Decay of Nature and her death was registered by
Sarah Woolgar
who was present at the death. She was
buried on 15 March 1841 in Henfield. She may have been baptised on 21
November 1759 in Bolney, Sussex, the daughter of
Francis Mitchell
and
Ann.
Samuel Woolgar and Mary
Mitchell had 9 known children:

William Woolgar,
my 4x Great Grandfather, was baptised on 11 June 1780 in Henfield. He
married
Naomi Lelliott
in 1805. (They have their own
page.)

John Woolgar
was baptised privately as he was in peril
of death on 12 November 1781 in Henfield and received into the church on
19 December 1781. He was buried in Henfield on 16 February
1784.

Mary Woolgar
was privately baptised on 18 January 1784
in Henfield and received into the church on 7 May 1784.

Sarah Woolgar
was baptised on 20 September 1786 in
Henfield and buried there on 24 September 1786. At her baptism her
parents were described as poor.

John Woolgar
was baptised on 9 September 1787 in
Henfield. He was an agricultural labourer. He died aged 90 years and was
buried on 24 December 1877 in Henfield.
John married
Martha Parker
by banns on 7 April 1821 in Shipley,
Sussex. John
was of Twineham, Sussex and Martha of Shipley. They both made their X marks.
The witnesses to their marriage were
Philip Parker
and
John Tomson,
who both signed their names.
Martha was born about 1800 in Edburton. She
died in Shoreham-by-Sea and was buried on 7 November 1877 in Henfield.
John and Martha had 11 known children. In 1851 the family were living at Shiprods Cottages, Henfield.

Catherine Woolgar
was baptised on 9 August 1795 in
Henfield. She was buried on 13 October 1875 in Henfield.
Catherine married James Lelliott
by banns on 17 November 1816 in Henfield. James was a
bachelor and Catherine a spinster and they were
both of Henfield. James signed his name whilst Catherine made her X
mark. The witnesses to their marriage were
James Cain
and
George Vinall.
James may have been baptised on
baptised on 11 January 1789 in Henfield, the son of
William Lelliott (1751-1825 and
Jenny
Wood (1761-1841) or on 8 February
1789 in Henfield, the son of
James
Goble (1760-1843) and
Mary
Goble (c1766-?). He was buried on 29 September 1823 in
Henfield. He was a bargeman.
James and Catherine had son:

James Lelliott Woolgar
was
baptised on 3 August 1817 in Henfield, but only his mother’s name was
given in the baptism register. Had James senior left his
wife? In 1841 a 20 year old James Lelliott was
living with the family of
Samuel Woolgar
(Catherine's elder brother) and he was a bargeman.

Stephen Woolgar
was baptised on 1 October 1797 in
Henfield. He married
Sarah Hards
