John WOOLGAR (1740-?)

and Sarah MUZZALL (c1740-1771)

and Elizabeth WALDER (?-?)

 

John Woolgar married twice, firstly to Sarah Muzzall on 10 March 1760 in Henfield, Sussex.  They were both of Henfield, John was a bachelor and Sarah a spinster.  John signed his name whilst Sarah made her X mark.  The witnesses to their marriage were Samuel Hards (marked) and William Vinall (signed).  John then married Elizabeth Walder by banns on 20 April 1772 in Henfield.  He was a widower and she a spinster and they were both of Henfield.  John signed his name whilst Elizabeth made her X mark.  The witnesses were John Ifold and William Vinall.  (They were not my direct ancestors.  John was the brother of my 5x Great Grandfather, Samuel Woolgar.)

John Woolgar was born 15 March 1739/40 and baptised on 28 March 1740 in Henfield.  He was the son of 5 135 Stephen Woolgar (1712-1791) and 5 135 Mary Elsey (1716-1788).

Sarah Muzzall's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  She was buried on 18 May 1771 in Henfield.  Might she have been baptised on 24 September 1735 in Henfield, the daughter of Abraham Muzzle and Mary Bud?

Elizabeth Walder's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.

 

John Woolgar and Sarah Muzzall had 4 known children:

  1. John Woolgar was baptised on 1 August 1762 in Henfield and buried there as a child on 18 June 1770 .

  2. Mary Woolgar was baptised on 4 August 1765 in Henfield.

    Mary married John Martin by licence on 25 March 1786 in Henfield.  He was a bachelor and she a spinster.

  3. Sarah Woolgar was baptised on 20 March 1768 in Steyning.

  4. Elizabeth Woolgar was baptised on 17 March 1771 in Steyning and buried as an infant on 12 June 1772 in Henfield.

 

John Woolgar and Elizabeth Walder had 12 known children:

  1. Elizabeth Woolgar was baptised on 31 May 1772 in Henfield.

  2. Samuel Woolgar was baptised on 13 February 1775 in Henfield.  He was buried there on 10 June 1825.

    Samuel married Mary Hillman by banns on 11 October 1802 in Findon, Sussex.  He was then said to be a bachelor of Bedding and she a spinster of Findon.

    Samuel and Mary had 6 known children:

    1. Henry Woolgar was baptised on 4 December 1803 in Horsham, Sussex.

    2. William Woolgar was baptised on 21 November 1805 in Henfield.

    3. Emma Woolgar was born on 5 April 1808 and baptised on 24 April 1808 in Henfield.

    4. Mary Ann Woolgar was born on 23 March 1811 and baptised on 14 April 1811 in Henfield.

    5. Stephen Woolgar was baptised on 2 April 1815 in Henfield.

    6. Louisa Woolgar was baptised on 22 November 1818 in Henfield. 

  3. John Woolgar was baptised on 8 December 1776 in Henfield.

    John married Mary Burrell on 22 August 1802 in Henfield.

    Mary died aged 52 years and was buried on 27 February 1826 in Henfield.

    John and Mary had 11 known children:

    1. Abraham Woolgar

    3. Philip Woolgar was born on 30 January 1804 and baptised on 26 February 1804 in Henfield.  He died in August 1881 in Upper Beeding.

      Philip married Charlotte Sharpe, widow.

      They had the following children:

      1. Philip Woolgar

      2. Mary Ann Woolgar was baptised on 14 July 1833 in Upper Beeding.  She married Peter Lelliott in 1856.  (They have their own page.)

  4. Grace Woolgar was born on 24 January and baptised on 25 July 1799 in Henfield.

  5. Stephen Woolgar was born on 8 July 1781 in Henfield.  He died on 4 February 1869.

    Stephen married Hannah Stringer by banns on 4 April 1809 in West Grinstead, Sussex.  They were both then of West Grinstead.

    Hannah was baptised on 7 May 1791 in West Grintead and was the daughter of Edward Stringer (1754-?) and Sarah Stanford.  She died on 15 January 1875.

    Stephen and Hannah had the following children:

    1. Emily Woolgar was baptised on 11 March 1810 in Horsham.

    2. Mary Ann Woolgar was baptised on 27 October 1811 in Horsham.

      Mary Ann married Henry Pelling by banns on 1 Febraury 1835 in Henfield, Sussex.  He was a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of Henfield.  The witnesses to their marriage were William Pelling and Ellen Woolgar.

      Henry was baptised on 18 July 1813 in Poynings and was the son of Richard Pelling (1785-1870) and Elizabeth Cornford (1781-1866).

    3. William Woolgar was baptised on 12 December 1813 in Horsham.

    4. Stephen Woolgar was baptised on 30 June 1816 in Horsham.

    5. Eleanor Woolgar was baptised on 7 February 1819 in Horsham.

    6. Edward Woolgar was baptised on 22 July 1821 in Horsham.

  6. Jane Woolgar was baptised on 31 October 1783 in Henfield.

  7. William Woolgar was born on 2 May and baptised on 20 May 1784 in Henfield.

  8. Isaac Woolgar was baptised on 15 July 1787 in Henfield.

    Isaac married Ann Baker on 16 June 1813 in Henfield.

    Ann was born on 27 December 1787 and was the daughter of William Baker and Elizabeth Smith.  She died on 7 December 1864.

    When the 1841 census was recorded the family were living at Elm Grove in Henfield and Isaac was a tanner.

    Isaac and Ann couple had 4 known children:

    4. Caroline Woolgar

  9. Philip Woolgar was born on 26 April 1789.  He died on 29 May 1863.

    Philip married twice, firstly to Ann Faulconer on 18 September 1809 in Horsham.

    Ann was born 6 December 1780 and baptised on 10 December 1780 at Plumpton, Sussex.  She was the daughter of William Faulconer (1751-1829) and Elizabeth Brook (1755-1832).  Ann died on 9 March 1830.

    The couple had 7 known children:

    1. Lawrence Faulconer Woolgar was born on 1 July 1810 and baptised on 5 July 1810 in Henfield.

    2. Ann Bayley Woolgar was born on 21 November 1811 and baptised on 1 December 1811 in Henfield.

    3. Arthur Fulkner Woolgar was baptised on 9 August 1814 in Henfield.

    4. Caroline Faulkner Woolgar was born and baptised on 4 February 1813 in Henfield and buried there on 28 October 1813.

    5. Caroline Faulkner Woolgar was baptised on 2 February 1814 in Henfield.

    Philip then married Ann Divall by banns on 18 April 1833 in Uckfield, Sussex.  He was then of Plumpton and she of Uckfield.

    Ann may have been baptised on 24 August 1794 in Uckfield, Sussex and have been the daughter of Francis Dival and Philadelphia Stevens.  Ann died on 20 April 1879.

  10. Edward Woolgar was born on 11 November 1792 in Henfield.  He died on 15 July 1860.

    Edward married twice, firstly to Sarah Lish on 7 April 1815 in Henfield.

    Sarah was born about 1798 and died on 28 June 1822.

    They had 1 known son:

    1. William Woolgar was baptised on 12 May 1816 in Henfield.

    Edward then married Sarah Dewdney on 20 April 1824 in Henfield.

    Sarah was born on 1790 and died on 8 March 1862.

    They had 1 known son:

    1. Charles Woolgar was baptised on 13 May 1827 in Henfield.

    On 12 June 1834, Edward and Sarah were witnesses to the marriage of Philip Ward and Frances Pollard.

  11. Abraham Woolgar was born on 24 January 1796 in Henfield.  He died on 14 April 1853.

    Abraham married Elizabeth Hollands by banns on 18 April 1827 in Henfield.  He was then a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of Henfield.

    Elizabeth was born about 1804 and died on 14 January 1885.

  12. John Woolgar was born on 27 December 1812.  He married Martha.
