James WOOLGAR (1802-1880)
James Woolgar and Esther Etherington
married by banns on 17 June 1826
in Washington, Sussex. He was then a bachelor and she a spisnter.
James Woolgar was baptised on 29 March 1802 in Wiston, Sussex.
He was the son of
Isaac Woolgar (1761-?) and Jane Tugnot
(c1775-?). He died in 1880.
Esther Etherington was
born about 1804 in Bury, Sussex. She was the daughter of
Etherton (1780-?) and
(1781-?). She died in 1878.
When the 1841 census was recorded the couple and 7 children were living
at H??? House in Steyning. James was then an agricultural
labourer. In 1851 the family were living in the High Street,
Steyning. By 1861 the couple, 2 son and 2 lodgers, namely
George Hills 17 and 16 year old George Freemen,
were living in New Row, Steyning.
James Woolgar and Esther Etherington had

years old in 1841 and living at home.
Isaac Woolgar was baptised on 22 March 1829 in
Southwick. He was 12 years old in 1841.
Henry Woolgar was baptised on 6 March 1831 in
Southwick. In 1841 he was 10 years old.
James Woolgar was born about 1833 in Steyning.
He married Elizabeth King

Jane Woolgar was born about 1835. In 1841 she was
6 years old.
Samuel Woolgar was born about 1837 in Steyning.
He was 4 years old in 1841. In 1851 he was a 14 year old farm
labourer. At the time of the 1861 census he was an unmarried 23
sailor living living at home.
Susanna Woolgar was born in 1840 in Steyning. At
the time of the 1841 census she was 10 months old. In 1851, Susan
was a 10 year old scholar.
Michael Woolgar was born about 1845 in Steyning.
In 1851 he was a 6 year old scholar. He was a 16 year old
agricultural labourer in 1861 and living with his parents.
