Richard WISDOM (1733-?)

and Mary MABB (1740-?)

 

Richard Wisdom and Mary Mabb married by banns on 28 June 1761 in Wadhurst, Sussex.  They were both then of Wadhurst.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

Richard Wisdom may have been baptised on 17 May 1733 in Frant, Sussex and have been the son of Richard Wisdom (1682-?) and Elizabeth Russell.

Mary Mabb may have been baptised on 21 September 1740 in Wadhurst, Sussex and have been the daughter of Jacob Mabb and Ann Wickham.

 

Richard Wisdom and Mary Mabb had 7 known children:

  1. Edward Wisdom was baptised on 22 February 1763 in Wadhurst.

  2. Richard Wisdom was baptised on 22 February 1765 in Wadhurst.

  3. William Wisdom was baptised privately on 8 February 1769 and received into the church on 17 February 1769 in Wadhurst.

    William may have married Eleanor Bellingham on 10 May 1795 in Lamberhurst, Kent.  He was then said to be from Wadhurst.

    William and Eleanor had the following known children:

    1. Mary Wisdom was baptised on 7 May 1797 in Tonbridge, Kent.  Did she marry John Heath on 13 July 1818 in Lamberhurst?

    2. William Francis Wisdom was baptised on 28 April 1801 in Frant, Sussex.  As William Francis Wisdom he married Rebecca Crayford by banns on 25 April 1825 in Pembury, Kent.  He was then a bachelor of Lamberhurst and she a spinster of Pembury.

    3. Britannia Wisdom was baptised on 22 September 1805 in Frant.

    4. Eleanor Wisdom was baptised on 15 February 1809 in Frant.  Did she marry David Clark by banns on 24 May 1827 in Frant?  She was then a spinster and he a bachelor and they were both of Frant.

  4. Gideon Wisdom was baptised in February 1771 in Wadhurst.

    Gideon married Elizabeth Holman by banns on 30 April 1803 in Wadhurst.  They were both then of Wadhurst.

    Might Gideon and Elizabeth have been the parents of:

    1. Gideon Wisdom was born about 1807/8 in Wadhurst.  He died in 1865 in Tonbridge.

      Gideon married Harriet Mouckton on 12 May 1828 at All Souls, Marylebone, London.

      When the 1841 census was recorded the couple and 4 children were living in the town of Wadhurst.  They were both said to be 30  years old and Gideon was a butcher.  Also with the family was 60 year old widow Elizabeth Wisdom.

      The family were still living in Wadhurst town in 1851 and Gideon was a 44 year old butcher and beer shop keeper.  Harriet was 42 and they both said they were born in Wadhurst.  With them on census night were 6 of their children.  Also with the family was 68 year old lodger and widower, Richard Vigor, who was a journeyman butcher.

      The 1861 census records the couple and 5 children were living at No. 3 Ely Terrace, Quarry Road, Tunbridge Wells, Kent.  Gideon was then a 53 year old butcher and Harriet 52.  He gave his place of birth as Wadhurst and she as Frant.

      1. John Wisdom was baptised on 29 February 1832 in Frant.  He was 9 years old when the 1841 census was recorded.

        John married Frances Gibbs in the first quarter of 1857 in the Tonbridge registration district.

        When the 1861 census was recorded the couple were lodging in the home of 65 year old widow Ann M. Latter at Spring House in Tunbridge Wells.  John was then a 29 year old porter and Fanny was 26.  He gave his place of birth as Frant and she as Brighton, Sussex.

      2. George Wisdom was about 1834.  He was 7 years old in 1841.

        George married Philadelphia Botten in the fourth quarter of 1854 in the Tonbridge registration district.

        When the 1861 census was recorded the couple and 4 children were living at the Foresters Arms in Tonbridge.  George was then a 29 year old inn keeper and Philadelphia was 31.  He said he was born in Wadhurst and she in Tonbridge.  Also with the family was 29 year old Joseph M. Markman a railway inspector from Ireland, his wife Caroline Markman from Somerset and their infant son, also William Bridger aged 20 from Surrey, William Elliott aged 19 also from Surrey and 17 year old general servant Harriet Cheal from Edenbridge, Kent.

        George and Philadelphia had the following children:

        1. John W. Wisdom was born about 1854 in Tonbridge.

        2. Clara Wisdom was baptised on 7 October 1855 in Tonbridge.

        3. George Gideon Wisdom was born in the first quarter of 1857 in Tonbridge.

        4. Kate Wisdom was born in the fourth quarter of 1858 in Tonbridge.

      3. Mary Ann Wisdom was born about 1836/7 in Wadhurst.  She was 5 years old in 1841.  In 1851 she was a 14 year old servant and the eldest of her siblings living at home.  In 1861 she was an unmarried 24 year old servant living at home with her parents.

      4. Alfred Wisdom was born in the first quarter of 1838 in Wadhurst.  He was 3 years old in 1841.  In 1851 he was a 13 year old scholar.

        Alfred married Caroline Isted in the first quarter of 1862 in the Tonbridge registration district.

      5. William H. Wisdom was born about 1842 in Wadhurst.  He was a 9 year old scholar in 1851.  In 1861 he was a 19 year old butcher living at home.

      6. Harriet Sophia Wisdom was born about 1846 in Wadhurst.  She was a 5 year old scholar in 1851.  In 1861 she was 15 years old.

      7. Charles Wisdom was born about 1848 in Wadhurst.  In 1851 he was 3 years old.  He was a 13 year old printer/compositor in 1861 and living with his parents.

        Charles married Mary Ann Sewell in the fourth quarter of 1867 in the Bethnal Green registration district.

      8. Frederic R. Wisdom was born in 1851 in Wadhurst.  At the time the 1851 census was recorded he was 3 months old.  He was a 10 year old scholar in 1861.

  5. Mary Wisdom was baptised on 2 February 1774 in Wadhurst.  The baptism register noted that her father was a shoemaker.

  6. George Wisdom was baptised privately on 1 June 1779 in Wadhurst.

    George married Charlotte Reed by banns on 11 February 1801 in Wadhurst.  They were both then of Wadhurst.  George was a butcher.

    Charlotte was baptised in January 1778 in Wadhurst and was the illegitimate daughter of Thomas Pettitt (1736-1802) and Jemima Wallis (c1756-1796).

    George and Charlotte had 2 known daughters:

    1. Philadelphia Wisdom was born on 11 January 1801 and baptised the next day in Wadhurst.

      Might she have married Edward Porter on 9 January 1832 in Hellingly, Sussex?  The death of 78 year old Philadelphia Porter was registered in the second quarter of 1879 in the Battle registration district.

      When the 1851 census was recorded, 50 year old Philadelphia Porter who gave her place of birth as Wadhurst, was living with her 39 year old husband Edward Porter in Brightling Road, Dallington, Sussex.  Edward was then an agricultural labourer and said he was born in Brightling.  Also with the couple were their 2 sons, namely, Edwin Porter aged 14 and 9 year old Samuel Porter, who were both born in Dallington.

      In 1841, the couple were living at Down Gates in Dallington.  He was then a 33 year old agricultural labourer and she was 38.  Also with them were 4 children, namely, Charlotte aged 9, Frances aged 8, Hannah aged 6 and 3 year old Edwin.

      The 1861 census records that 62 year old Philadelphia Porter, from Wadhurst, was an agricultural labourer's widow and she was boarding in the home of 27 year old widow Elizabeth Sweatman and her 2 children, at Staces in Dallington.

    2. Marianne Wisdom was born on 22 December 1801 in Wadhurst.

      As Mary Ann Wisdom did she marry James Ellis on 24 May 1825 in Lamberhurst?

      When the 1851 census was recorded, 49 year old Mary Ann Ellis was living with her 48 year old husband James Ellis at Benover in Yalding, Kent.  James was an agricultural bailiff and said he was born in Burwash, Sussex, whilst Mary Ann said she was born in Wadhurst.  With them on census night were 6 of their children, namely, Edwin aged 17, 12 year old Emily, 10 year old Jane, Jemima aged 8, Robert aged 5 and their 25 year old married daughter Charlotte Atkins.

      In 1841 the Ellis family were living at Broadreed Farm in Mayfield, Sussex.  James and Mary Ann were both aged 39 years and he was a farmer.  With them were 9 children, namely, Charlotte 15, George 13, James, 11, Mary Ann 9, Edwin 7, Samuel 5, Elizabeth 3, Emmily 2 and 10 month old Jane, and 2 servants, 19 year old Levi Homewood and 19 year old Mary Saunders.

  7. Elizabeth Wisdom was baptised on 7 April 1782 in Wadhurst.  The baptism register noted that her father was a shoemaker.

 

A Thomas Wisdom married Mary Holman on 9 December 1792 in Wadhurst.  They may have had the following daughter:

  1. Eliza Catharine Wisdom was baptised on 3 December 1809 in Wadhurst.
