Thomas WILLARD (1805-1882)

and Ruth MERSH (1812-1876)

Thomas Willard and Ruth Mersh by banns on 7 April 1829 at the parish church in Pulborough, Sussex.  The witnesses to their marriage were Raney Whittington and James Ovington.  (They were not my direct ancestors.  Thomas was the brother of my 3x Great Grandfather, Clement Willard.)

Thomas Willard was baptised on 23 July 1805 in West Chiltington, Sussex.  He was the son of John Willard (1773-1846) and Jane Godden (1774-1850).  Thomas died aged 76 years and his death was registered in the first quarter of 1882 in the Horsham registration district.  In 1881 he was an unemployed agricultural labourer living with his son Charles in Mannings Heath.

Ruth Mersh was baptised on 19 April 1812 in Billingshurst, Sussex.  She was the daughter of John Mersh and Mary Burchell.  Ruth died aged 66 years and was buried on 24 April 1876 in Lower Beeding, Sussex.

At the time of the 1841 census the couple and their 2 children were living at North Heath, in Pulborough and Thomas was an agricultural labourer.

When the 1851 census was recorded the family were living in Pulborough and Thomas was a farm labourer.  They were then living next door to George Harding and his wife Emma, and her mother was Thomas's cousin.

In 1861 the couple were living at North Cottage in Cowfold, Sussex and Thomas was a carter.  The census enumerator had transposed Ruth and their daughter Mary's names.

By the time of the 1871 census the couple had moved to Plummer's Plain in Lower Beeding, Sussex and Thomas was still a carter.  They were then living next door, or in the same property as their son Charles and his wife.

Thomas Willard and Ruth Mersh had 5 known children:

  1. Rhoda Willard was baptised on 26 October 1831 in Pulborough.  Her father was then described as a labourer in the baptism register.  She died as an infant and was buried on 2 March 1832 in Pulborough.

  2. Helen Willard was baptised on 4 January 1834 in Pulborough, at which time her father was a labourer.  The 1841 census records that she was 7 year old Ellen Willard.  In 1851, Ellen was a 16 year old house servant in the home of William Heath a miller at Heath Mill in Pulborough.

As Ellen Willard she married George Whittington by banns on 1 October 1853 in Pulborough.  He was a 20 year old bachelor and labourer and she a 19 year old spinster.  Their fathers were named as Harvey Whittington a farmer and Thomas Willard a labourer.  The witnesses to the marriage were Jesse Greenfield and Anne Burchell.

George was baptised on 24 March 1833 in Pulborough and was the son of Harvey Whittington (1793-1877) and Mary Parker.

I have not found George and Ellen in the 1861 English census.

  3. Charles Willard was baptised on 11 February 1838 in Pulborough, at which time his father was a labourer.  His mother's name was recorded as Rose in the baptism register.  He was 3 years old when the 1841 census was recorded.  In 1851 he was 13 years old and living with his parents.

Charles married Harriett Warne by banns on 27 August 1870 in Lower Beeding, Sussex.  He was then a 30 year old bachelor and labourer.  Harriet was a 29 year old spinster.  Their fathers were named as Thomas Willard a labourer and George Warne a gardener.  The witnesses to their marriage were Jonas Dale and Harriet W. Dale.

Harriet was baptised on 28 October 1836 in Ringwood, Hampshire and was the daughter of George Warne and Sarah Warne.  She died aged 52 years and was buried on 10 July 1891 in Lower Beeding, and it was noted in the burial register that she was from Leaford or Seaford.

In 1871 the couple were living at Plummer's Plain in Lower Beeding and Charles was then a labourer.  When the 1881 census was recorded the family were living at Mannings Heath near Nuthurst, Sussex and Charles was then an engine driver.  Also with them at that time was Charles's widower father.

Charles and Harriet had 4 known children:

    1. Charles Thomas Willard was baptised on 7 May 1871 in Lower Beeding.  When the 1881 census was recorded he was a 9 year old scholar living with his parents.

Charles married Annie Chapman in the third quarter of 1890 in the Wandsworth, London registration district.

Annie was born in the second quarter of 1865 in Great Cheverell in Wiltshire.  She was the daughter of George Chapman and Lavinia Dunford.  Her father was a shoemaker.  When the 1871 census was recorded, Ann was a 5 year old scholar living with her parents in Cheverell Street in Great Cheverell.   In 1881 she was a 17 year old servant in the home of Alfred Jennings at 23 King Street, Marylebone, London.

When the 1891 census was recorded the couple were both servants in the same household in Lower Beeding, although they were both said to be single and Annie was recorded by her maiden name.  By the time of the 1901 census the couple and their 3 children were living in Elmdon, Warwickshire and Charles was a domestic coachman.

    2. Willie Willard was baptised on 20 September 1872 in Lower Beeding and buried there on 30 September 1872, aged 6 days.

    3. Lottie Ruth Willard was baptised on 28 December 1873 in Lower Beeding and buried there on 4 March 1875, aged 16 months.

    4. Polly Willard was born about 1875 in Lower Beeding.  She died aged 19 years and her death was registered in the third quarter of 1894 in the Kensington registration district.

  4. Mary Willard was born on 23 August and baptised on 12 September 1841 in Pulborough, at which time her father was a labourer.  When the 1851 census was recorded she was a 9 year old scholar.  In 1861 she was living with her parents in Cowfold.

Mary married Richard Parsons by banns on 30 August 1865 at the Chapel of St. John in Lower Beeding.  He was a 21 year old bachelor and she a 24 year old spinster.  The witnesses to the marriage were Henry Comber and Mary Silsby.

Richard was born about 1845 in Bolney, Sussex.  He was the son of Peter Parsons and Elizabeth Potter.  When the 1851 census was recorded he was living with his parents at Queen House in Bolney and he was then 6 years old.  His father was then a master carpenter employing 2 men.

In 1871 the couple and their 2 sons were living at Cookes (Cross Ways) in Lower Beeding and Richard was a carpenter.  When the 1881 census was recorded the family were living at 17 Union Street, London and Richard was a carpenter.  The family had moved to 15 Yelverton Road in Battersea by the time of the 1891 census.  Richard was still a carpenter when the 1901 census was recorded and the couple were living in Chelsea.

Richard and Mary had 6 known children:

    1. Richard Parsons was born about 1868 in Bolney.  He was 3 years old when the 1871 census was recorded.  In 1881 he was a 13 year old scholar living at home.

Richard married Julia Madge in the second quarter of 1886 in the Chelsea registration district.

Julia was born about 1868 in Bow, London.
