Pre 1650 West Sussex Willard Families

With the aid of the Sussex Family History Group's marriage index, IGI and various bits I have gathered over the years, the following is my attempt at putting together the early West Sussex Willard families.  There were far more Willards living in the East Sussex parishes, but I haven't, yet, attempted to unravel them. 

The families are listed in rough order of the parents marriage.

BALCOMBE (1)

Thomas Wyllard married unknown before 1548.  They had the following children:

1. John Wyllard was baptised on 7 May 1548 in Balcombe.  Only his father's name was recorded.  Presumably he died as an infant.

2. Roger Wyllard was baptised on 10 April 1549 in Balcombe.  Only his father's name was recorded.

3. John Wyllard was baptised on 27 October 1550 in Balcombe.  Only his father's name was recorded.

IFIELD

Ralph Willard married Agnes before 1550.  They may have had the following children:

1. Edward Willard was born about 1550.  He was of Ifield.  Might he have been the Edward Willarde or Wyllarde, yeoman of Slaugham, Sussex, who left a will which was proved on 12 March 1605 (ref PROB 11/105)?

2. Basel Willard was born about 1552.  He was of Ifield.  Bassell Willard a householder was buried on 28 April 1629 in Horsham.  An Elizabeth Willard, widow was buried on 9 February 1636/7 in Horsham.

3. Ralfe Willard was born about 1554.  He died in 1617.  He was of Ifield.  He left a will dated 18 June 1617 and proved at Lewes on 20 November 1617.

4. Margaret Willard had the following daughter:

   1. Grace Willard was baptised on 12 March 1575 in Horsham.

Joan Willard wife of Christofer Willard was buried on 25 June 1588 in Horsham.

PETWORTH (1)

John Wyllard married unknown before 1564. 

They may have had the following children:

1. Elizabeth Willard was baptised on 28 August 1559 in Petworth.  Neither of her parents were named in the baptism register.

2. John Wyllard was baptised on 2 February 1564/5 in Petworth and buried there as an infant on 17 February 1564/5.  Only his father's name was recorded.

3. Rose Willard was baptised on 18 May 1568 in Petworth.  Only her father's name was recorded.

4. Joane Willard was baptised on 29 January 1569/70 in Petworth.

5. Katherin Willard was baptised on 2 September 1571 in Petworth and probably buried there on 11 November 1571.  Only her father's name was recorded.

6. Ann Willard was baptised on 10 September 1572 in Petworth.  Only her father's name was recorded.

7. William Willard was baptised on 3 September 1581 in Petworth.  Only his father's name was recorded.

WARNHAM

BURTON CUM COATES

William Willarde was baptised on 1 September 1562 in Burton cum Coates.

Joan Willarde was baptised on 18 February 1564/5 in Burton cum Coates.

Edward Willarde was buried on 11 July 1570 in Coates.

IFIELD (2)

Rafe Willard married unknown before 1570.  They may have had the following children:

1. Edward Willard was baptised on 4 June 1570 in Ifield.

COLDWALTHAM (1)

Nicholas Willard married Alice Braby, widow on 29 November 1572 in Coldwaltham.

An Alice Willard, widow of Coldwaltham, left a will in 1610.

PETWORTH (2)

Edward Willard married Joan Legatt on 15 January 1572/3 in Petworth.  Edward may have been buried in Petworth on 4 May 1579.

They may have had the following children:

1. John Willard was baptised on 11 May 1573 in Petworth.  Only his father's name was recorded.

2. Raynold Willard was baptised on 4 September 1575 in Petworth.  Only his father's name was recorded.  He may have married in 1606.

3. George Willard was baptised on 14 October 1577 in Petworth and buried there on the same day.  Only his father's name was recorded.

4. Nycho Willard was baptised on 16 August 1579 in Petworth.  Only his father's name was recorded.

ARDINGLY (1)

Richard Willerd married Margaret Infeld on 25 January 1572/3 in Ardingly.

1. William Willerd was baptised on 4 October 1573 in Ardingly.  Only his father's name was recorded in the baptism register and he was then of Studgat.

2. Ann Willard was baptised on 18 April 1754 in Ardingly.  Only her father's name was recorded.

3. Margaret Willerd was baptised on 5 February 1575/6 in Ardingly.  Only her father's name was recorded.

4. Ales Willerd was baptised on 30 February 1576/7 in Ardingly.  Only her father's name was recorded and he was of Studgat.

5. George Willerd was baptised on 24 February 1577/8 in Ardingly.  Only his father's name was recorded.

6. Ann Willerd was baptised on 13 February 1579/80 in Ardingly.  Only her father's name was recorded.

7. John Willerd was baptised at home by the midwife on 31 March 1582 in Ardingly.  Only his father's name was recorded.  He was also buried on 31 March 1582 in Ardingly.

8. Samuel Willerd was baptised on 3 March 1582/3 in Ardingly.  Only his father's name was recorded and he was of Strudgat.

A Margaret Willard, widow, married John Hamling on 1 February 1584/5 in Lindfield, Sussex.  However, on 27 January 1586/7 a Richard Willerd of Stodgat was buried in Ardingly.  A Richard Willard was a church warden of Ardingly in 1613.

Did Richard have 2 brothers John Willerd and George Willerd, and a sister Marye Willerd?

Did he also have a descendant, Richard Willard who married in Ardingly in 1674?

KIRDFORD (1)

Henry Willard married Joan Parke on 17 August 1573 in Kirdford.  He may also have married Joan Lutman on 10 January 1585/6 in Kirdford.  And then he may have married Maud Stone on 21 April 1589 in Wisborough Green.  They may have had the following children:

1. Henry Willard married in 1601.  (I am guessing.)

2. Joane Willard was baptised on 8 March 1579/80 in Kirdford.  Only her father's name was recorded.

3. Margery Willard was baptised on 8 March 1579/80 in Kirdford.  Only her father's name was recorded.

4. John Willard was baptised on 31 December 1588 in Kirdford and buried there on 3 January 1588/9.  Only his father's name was recorded.

5. Joane Willard was baptised on 29 March 1590 in Kirdford.  Only her father's name was recorded.

5. John Willard was baptised on 11 March 1592 in Kirdford.  Only his father's name was recorded.  Might he have married in 1621?

ARDINGLY (2)

John Willerd was probably the the son of John Willerd the elder of Hapset who was buried on 24 August 1583 in Ardingly.  John the younger married unknown before 1578.  They had the following children:

1. John Willerd was baptised on 2 March 1577/8 in Ardingly.  Only his father's name was recorded in the baptism register and he was then of Hapset.

2. Thomas Willerd was buried on 6 January 1579/80 in Ardingly.  His burial entry records that his father John was of Hapset.

3. Thomas Willerd was baptised on 16 December 1580 in Ardingly.  Only his father's name was recorded and he was of Hapset.

4. Marye Willerd was baptised on 7 January 1581/2 in Ardingly.  Only her father's name was recorded and he was of Hapset.

5. Elizabeth Willerd was baptised on 27 November 1586 in Ardingly.  Only her father's name was recorded and he was of Hapset.

6. Susan Willerd was baptised on 21 June 1589 in Ardingly.  Only her father's name was recorded and he was of Hapset.  She was buried on 29 June 1589 in Ardingly

7. Alce Willerd was baptised on 26 December 1590 in Ardingly.  Only her father's name was recorded.

Katherne Willerd wife of John Willerd was buried on 1 May 1594 in Ardingly.  On 10 April 1598 a John Willard hanged himself at George Lynvill's Wood in Ardingly.

Did he have 2 brothers named Richard Willerd and George Willerd, and a sister Marye Willerd?

COLDWALTHAM (2)

Edward Willard married Joanne Brokfeilde on 28 November 1578 in Coldwaltham, Sussex.

An Edward Willard of Coldwaltham left a will in 1622.

KIRDFORD (2)

William Willard married unknown before 1579.  They may have had the following children:

1. John Willard was baptised on 23 March 1579 in Kirdford.  Only his father's name was recorded.

Stephen Willard married Alice Bignolde on 1 May 1580 in Fernhurst, Sussex.  They may have had the following children:

1. Randal Willard married in 1606.

2. George Willard married in 1612.

ARDINGLY (3)

George Willerd married Annis before 1582.  She was buried in Ardingly on 6 or 16 June 1582.  He may then have married Margaret Alexander on 23 October 1583 in Lindfield.  They may have had the following child:

1. Richard Willerd was buried on 12 April 1584 in Ardingly.  Only his father's name was recorded in the burial register.

Did George have 2 brothers, Richard Willerd and John Willerd, and a sister Marye Willerd?

Edmund Willerde married unknown before 1589.  They may have had the following children:

1. Anne Willard was baptised on 28 March 1589 in Coldwaltham.  Only her father's name was recorded as Edmund Willerde.  Might she have married John Wepham on 21 June 1624 in Pulborough?

2. Denis Willard was baptised on 2 December 1594 in Coldwaltham.  Only her father's name was recorded as Edmond Willarde.  As Dionysia Willarde she married Richard Clares on 2 February 1618/9 in South Stoke.

3. Alice Willard was baptised on 14 February 1697/8 in Coldwaltham.  Only her father's name was recorded as Edmond Willard.

Might Edmund also have been the father of Richard Willard who married in Pulborough in 1627?

William Wyllard married Agnes Miles on 30 August 1596 in Petworth.  They may have had the following children:

1. William Willard was baptised on 26 March 1598 in Petworth.  Only his father's name was recorded.

2. Nycho Willard was baptised on 10 August 1600 in Petworth.  Only his father's name was recorded.

3. Mary Willard was baptised on 23 June 1604 in Petworth.  Only her father's name was recorded.

BOXGROVE

Robert Wyllard married Alice Penicodd on 28 October 1599 in Boxgrove.  They may have had the following children:

1. Joan Wyllerd was baptised on 24 August 1600 in Boxgrove.  Only her father's name was recorded.

WEST CHILTINGTON

Henry Willard married Agnes Tye on 20 July 1601 in West Chiltington.  Might he have been a son of Henry Willard who first married in Kirdford in 1573?

Could they have had a son Richard Willard who married in Pulborough in 1627?

Thomas Willard married Agnes Bennett on 2 February 1602/3 in Ifield.  They may have had the following children:

1. Joane Willard was baptised on 4 December 1603 in Ifield.  Only her father's name was recorded.

John Willard married Jane Freeland on 19 May 1606 in Petworth.  They may have had the following children:

1. Jane Wyllard was baptised on 28 March 1607 in Petworth.  Only her father's name was recorded.

2. Eliz Wyllard was baptised on 17 April 1608 in Petworth.  Only her father's name was recorded.

3. Joane Willard was baptised on 26 January 1611/2 in Petworth.  Only her father's name was recorded.

4. Robert Willard was baptised on 24 March 1612/3 in Petworth.  Only her father's name was recorded.  Did he marry in 1640?

5. Margery Willard was baptised on 23 April 1615 in Petworth.  Only her father's name was recorded.

FERNHURST (2)

Reynold Willerd may have been baptised on 4 September 1575 in Petworth, the son of Edward Willard and Joan Legatt, or he may have been the son of Stephen Willard and Alice Bignolde.  He married Agnes Streate on 14 September 1606 in Fernhurst.  They may have had the following children:

1. Alce Wyllerd was baptised on 28 August 1608 in Fernhurst.  Her father's name was recorded as Raynold Wyllerd.

2. James Willard was baptised on 9 August 1612 in Fernhurst.  His father's name was recorded as Randolle Willard.

3. Elizabethe Willeard was baptised on 22 September 1616 in Fernhurst.  Her father's name was recorded as Randel Willeard.

4. Annis Willard was baptised on 10 May 1621 in Fernhurst.  Her father's name was recorded as Randle Willard.  Her baptism on the same day may also have been recorded in the Lodsworth register as Agnis Willerd daughter of Raynold Willerd.

TILLINGTON / GRAFFHAM

Nicholas Willard may have been born in the 1570's or early 1580's.  He buried on 4 June 1630 in Tillington.  Was he born in Petworth in 1579, the son of Edward Willard?

Nicholas may have married 3 times, firstly to Susan Denire on 15 September 1605 in Tillington.

Susanna wife of Nicholas Willard was buried on 12 January 1608/9 in Tillington.

Nicholas then married Maud Blackman on 11 June 1609 in Tillington.

He may then have married Alice Jay on 16 May 1613 in Graffham.  Alice may have married Richard Steninge on 23 November 1631 in Linchmere.

Nicholas had the following children:

1. Agnes Willard was baptised on 26 July 1606 in Tillington.

2. Jane Willard was baptised on 2 November 1607 in Tillington.

3. John Willard was baptised on 20 January 1610/1 in Tillington.  He may have been buried on 13 August 1661 in Tillington.

4. Alice Willard was baptised on 9 January 1613/4 in Tillington.  She was apprenticed on 10 December 1631, when she was a 17 year old of Tillington and her father Nicholas was a deceased husbandman.  Alice married Robert Coker on 15 January 1640/1 in Tillington.

5. Nicholas Willarde was baptised on 7 April 1622 in Tillington.  He may have been buried on 1 May 1643 in Tillington.

6. Philip Willard may have been part of this family.  He was buried on 16 December 1692 in Tillington.

   Philip married Margaret Sadler on 29 September 1657 in Tillington.

   Margaret wife of Philip Willard was buried on 15 June 1676 in Tillington.

   Philip had the following children:

   1. Elizabeth Willard was baptised on 18 April 1650 in Tillington.  Only her father's named was recorded in the baptism register.

   2. Anne Willard was born on 6 June 1653 and her birth was recorded in the Tillington baptism register as the daughter of Philip.

   3. Philip Willard was born on 13 August 1658 and his birth was recorded in the Tillington baptism register, as the son of Philip and Margaret.

   4. Margaret Willard was born on 24 April 1660 and her birth was recorded in the Tillington baptism register, as the daughter of Philip and Margaret.

   5. Mary Willard was born on 11 February 1661/2 and her birth was recorded in the Tillington baptism register, as the daughter of Philip.

   6. Alice Willard was born on 22 February 1663/4 and her birth was recorded in the Tillington baptism register, as the daughter of Philip.

   7. Edward Willard was baptised on 13 September 1666 in Tillington.  Only his father's name was recorded in the baptism register.

   8. Edward Willard was baptised on 15 May 1668 in Tillington.  Only his father's name was recorded in the baptism register.  The Tillington burial register records that an unnamed child of Philip Willard was buried on 3 December 1668.

   9. Joan Willard was baptised on 3 March 1668/9 in Tillington, the daughter of Philip.  She may have married Henry Jagger on 26 April 1696 in Tillington.

   10. Sarah Willard was baptised on 6 August 1673 in Tillington, the daughter of Philip.

George Willard may have been the son of Stephen Willard and Alice Bignold.  He married Alice Trybe, widow, on 17 September 1612 in Fernhurst.  They may have had the following children:

1. Alce Wyllerd was baptised on 17 June 1613 in Fernhurst.  Only her father's name was recorded.

2. Jone Wyllerd was baptised on 15 May 1614 in Fernhurst.  Only her father's name was recorded.  She may have married Roger Howike on 27 April 1635 in Linchmere.

3. Steven Wyllerd was baptised on 27 December 1615 in Fernhurst.  Only his father's name was recorded.  He may have married before 1638.

4. Alce Willard was baptised on 30 November 1617 in Fernhurst.  Only her father's name was recorded.

5. George Willard was baptised on 27 June 1619 in Fernhurst.  Only his father's name was recorded.

6. Elizabeth Willard was baptised on 16 April 1621 in Fernhurst.  Only her father's name was recorded.

7. George Willard was baptised on 26 January 1622 in Fernhurst.  Only his father's name was recorded.

John Willard married  Alice Booker on 1 October 1615 in Sutton.  They may have had the following children:

1. John Willard was baptised on 23 March 1616/7 in Arundel.

2. Elizabeth Willard was baptised on 4 October 1618 in Arundel and buried there on 14 October 1618.

3. Jane Wille***? was baptised on 21 October 1621 in Arundel.

IPING

Roger Willord married Agnes Betsworth on 15 June 1620 in Linchmere.  They may have had the following children:

1. Alice Willard was baptised on 16 March 1622 in Iping.  Only her father's name was recorded.  As Alice Willarde she may have married Robert Coker (or Coster) on 15 January 1640/1 in Tillington.

2. Annas Willard was baptised on 13 February 1624 in Iping.  Only her father's name was recorded.

3. A Margaret Willard of Iping married William Stilwell of Wartling on 14 July 1645 in Linchmere.

KIRDFORD (3)

John Willerd married Sybil Lee on 1 July 1621 in Kirdford.  Might he have been born in 1592 and have been the son of Henry Willard?  They may have had the following children:

1. Richard Willerd was baptised on 10 June 1622 in Kirdford.  Only his father's name was recorded.

2. Margrett Wilerd was baptised on 27 March 1625 in Kirdford.  Only her father's name was recorded. 

3. John Willerd was baptised on 28 June 1635 in Kirdford.  Only his father's name was recorded

4. Katherine Willard was baptised on 19 May 1639 in Kirdford.  Both her parent's names were recorded and her mother was Sibill.

PETWORTH (9)

William Willarde married Joane Milles on 4 August 1623 in Tillington.  They may have had the following children:

1. Ann Willard was baptised on 10 April 1626 in Petworth.  Only her father's name was recorded.

2. John Willard was baptised on 15 January 1628 in Petworth and buried there on 11 April 1631.  Only his father's name was recorded.

3. Mary Willard was baptised on 21 August 1631 in Petworth.  Only her father's name was recorded.

4. Jane Willard was baptised on 14 July 1648 in Petworth.  Only her father's name was recorded.

A William Willard of Petworth signed the Protestation Returns of 1641/2.

WORTH

FERNHURST (4)

Nicholas Willard married unknown before 1627.  Nicholas had the following children:

1. Nicholas Willard was baptised on 7 October 1627 in Fernhurst.  Only his father's name was recorded.

2. Elizabeth Willarde was baptised on 2 August 1629 in Fernhurst.  Only her father's name was recorded.

3. John Willard was baptised on 27 March 1631 in Fernhurst.  Only his father's name was recorded.

4. Samuell Willard was baptised on 6 March 1632 in Fernhurst.  Only his father's name was recorded.  Might he have married Elizabeth Douden on 28 June 1668 in Petworth?

5. Jane Willard was baptised on 25 March 1635 in Fernhurst.  Only her father's name was recorded.

6. Mary Willard was baptised on 1 January 1636 in Fernhurst.  Only her father's name was recorded.

PULBOROUGH

Richard Willard married Mary Simonds on 10 September 1627 in Pulborough.  They may have had the following children:

1. Richard Willard was baptised on 14 March 1628/9 in Pulborough.  Only his father's name was recorded.  He was buried on 17 March 1629/30 in Pulborough and the burial register recorded that he was the son of Richard.

2. Edmund Willard was baptised on 14 August 1631 in Pulborough.  Only his father's name was recorded.  He was buried on 19 January 1640/1 in Pulborough and it was noted in the burial register that he was the son of Richard.

3. John Willard was baptised on 22 January 1635/6 in Pulborough.

Was there a daughter Priscilla Willard who married Thomas Page on 9 June 1657 in Pulborough, when they were both of the parish?

And another daughter Mary Weleard who married William Bennt on 4 November 1662 in Thakeham.

Mary wife of Richard Willard was buried on 4 February 1640/1.  A Richard Willard was buried in Pulborough on 27 December 1656.  And the widow Willard was buried there on 26 February 1660/1.

As the couple named a son Edmund, could this mean Richard was a son of Edmund Willerde who had children baptised in Coldwaltham in the 1590's?  Or might he have been a son of Henry Willard who married in nearby West Chiltington in 1601?

A Richard Willard of Pulborough signed the Protestation Returns of 1641/2.

Richard Willard may then have married Joan Ragget on 12 May 1642 in Pulborough.  She was buried in Pulborough on 22 May 1643.

Richard Willard may have married again to unknown before 1646.  They may have had the following child:

1. Jane Willard was baptised on 18 March 1646 in Pulborough.  Only her father's name was recorded.

Steven Willard may have been baptised on 27 December 1615 in Fernhurst, the son of George Willard and Alice Trybe.  He married Susanna before 1638.  They may have had the following children:

1. Steven Willard was baptised on 10 March 1638 in Fernhurst.  Both his parents names were recorded and his mother of Susanna.

2. Steven Willard was baptised on 24 October 1641 in Fernhurst.  Only his father's name was recorded.

3. John Willard (Copy of Court Roll  ADD MSS/43,018  30 October 1692 Admission of John Willard, on the surrender of Susannah Willard, wife of Stephen Willard, his mother.)

Robert Willard married Ann Gates on 26 July 1640 in Selham or Lodsworth.  Was he born in 1612 in Petworth, the son of John Willard?  They may have had the following child:

1. Barbara Willard was baptised on 30 May 1641 in Petworth.  Only her father's name was recorded.

Did they also have a son named Robert Willard who married Jane Allen on 5 February 1665/6 in Petworth?

Eliz Willard was baptised on 28 August 1559 in Petworth.  Neither parent's names were recorded.

Joan Willarde was baptised on 18 February 1564 in Coates cum Burton.  Neither parent's names were recorded.

Katherine Wyllard married Luke Wayman on 26 November 1562 in Petworth.

Joan Willard married Edmund Holland on 15 January 1580/1 in Petworth.

Joan Willarde, spinster, married Joseph Blackman, bachelor, on 11 November 1582 in Steyning.

Eleanor Willerd married Robert Blunden on 10 September 1584 in Barlavington.

Rachel Willarde married Nicholas Streater on 16 November 1587 in Worth.

Joan Willerd, widow, married Nicholas Binfield on 4 February 1587/8 in Ardingly.

Mary Wyllarde of Chiltington married George Thorpe of Pulborough, by Licence on 13 October 1588 in Pulborough.

Jane Willard married Thomas Hurst on 19 June 1592 in Kirdford.

Dorothy Willerd married Edward Duke on 1 July 1592 in Storrington.

Susan Willard married Thomas Caslinn on 7 July 1592 in Balcombe.

Agnes Willerd married George Entnepe on 8 February 1592/3 in Sompting.

Mary Wyllard of Lyminster married William Somner of Chiltington by Licence dated 19 July 1595.

Joan Willard married Christopher French on 11 September 1600 in Sullington.

Philippa Willerd married John Polherd on 7 November 1602 in Hurstpierpoint.

Martha Willerd married Thomas Reade on 17 January 1602/3 in Worth.

Joan Willard married John Andros on 27 January 1602/3 in Petworth.

Elizabeth Willerde married John Fogden on 19 November 1604 in Boxgrove.

Katherine Willard married John Aley on 23 September 1605 in Ifield.

Margaret Wyllard married John Grame of Horne on 3 December 1609 in East Grinstead.

Mary Willard of Washington married Thomas Martyn of Angmering by Licence dated 3 February 1609/10.

Agnes Willerd (or Willet) married John Beard on 27 April 1612 in Woodmancote.

Frances Willard married William Perrin on 22 May 1614 in Oving.

Doritee Willeard married John Lambert on 17 October 1614 in Shipley.  No possible baptism for Dorothy in the IGI.

Dorothe Willerd married John Steidman on 19 May 1617 in Shipley.  No possible baptism for Dorothy in the IGI.
