Francis WILLARD (c1835-?)

and Charlotte (c1840-?)

Francis Willard and Charlotte married before or about 1867.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

Francis Willard was born about 1835/6 in Guestling, Sussex.  He was the son of Batchelor Willard (1792-1844) and Elizabeth Stone (c1790-?).

Charlotte was born about 1839-42 in Cork, Ireland.

When the 1871 census was recorded, Francis was a 35 year old married fisherman on board the Happy Return, crewed by other Sussex men.  They were included in the census for Sutton Pool, Plymouth, Devon.  I have not found Charlotte and their children in the 1871 census.

At the time of the 1881 census the family were living at 10 Hill Street, Hastings.  Francis was a 45 year old gas labourer and Charlotte was 39.  Six of their children were with them on census night.

In 1891 the family were living at 1 Brook Cottages in Hastings.  Francis was then a 55 year old gas works fitter and Charlotte was 52.  Four of their children were at home on census night, as well as 4 year old granddaughter Ellen Willard, born in Hastings, and 20 year old boarder and hawker James Woodford.

When the 1901 census was recorded the couple were living at 36 St. Mary's Road in Hastings.  Francis was a 66 year old resort house fitter and Charlotte was 60.  With them on census night was their married daughter Frances and her infant granddaughter, and their 14 granddaughter Helen Willard.

Francis Willard and Charlotte had 7 known children:

  1. Eliza Ellen Willard was baptised on 3 November 1867 in Iden, Sussex.  In 1881 she was a 13 year old scholar.  She was an unmarried 23 year old in 1891 and living with her parents.

  2. Batchelor James Willard was born in the third quarter of 1869 in Hastings.  He was an 11 year old scholar in 1881.

  3. Francis Henry Willard was born in the third quarter of 1873 in Hastings.  In 1881 he was a 7 year old scholar.  He was an 18 year old grocer's assistant in 1891.

  4. Charlotte Willard was baptised on 9 June 1875 at All Saints in Hastings.  She was a 5 year old scholar in 1881.

  5. Frances Elizabeth Willard was baptised on 13 May 1877 at All Saints in Hastings.  She was a 4 year old scholar in 1881.  In 1891 she was 14 years old and living with her parents.

Frances married Frederick Bounds in the third quarter of 1900 in the Hastings registration district.

When the 1901 census was recorded Frances and her infant daughter were living with her parents.  The census noted her as 24 year old married Frances Bounds.

Frederick and Frances had the following known child:

    1. A daughter was born in March 1901 in Hastings.  She was under a month old when the 1901 census was recorded and unnamed.  The birth of Frances McElligot L. Bounds was registered in the second quarter of 1901 in the Hastings registration district.

  6. Philadelphia Willard was baptised on 23 April 1879 at All Saints, Hastings.  Her death was registered in the fourth quarter of 1879 in Hastings.

  7. Stephen Willard was born in the first quarter of 1881 in Hastings.  At the time of the 1881 census he was a month old.  He was an 11 year old scholar in 1891.
