John WHITNEY (c1640-1711)

and Thomasine (c1645-1694)

John Whitney and Thomasine were my 9x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They married sometime before or about 1667.  No possible marriage has been recorded in the Sussex Family History Group's marriage index.

John Whitneyís date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  I am speculating that he may have been a son of William Whitney and Tabitha Goldsmith (1606-?), simply because he named a daughter Tabitha, which is a fairly unusual name, plus he named his first son William.  He was most probably buried as Goodman Whitney on 26 November 1711 in Ringmer.

Thomasineís date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  She was buried on 21 March 1694 in Ringmer.  The burial register noted that Thomasine was the wife of John Whitney.

John Whitney and Thomasine had 4 known children:

  1. William Whitney was baptised on 12 April 1667 in Ringmer, Sussex.  (SFHG database says Thomas Whitne was baptised on that day.)  William was most probably buried on 14 May 1705 in Newhaven.  The burial register noted that he was a carpenter.

William married Jane Duffield on 30 December 1694 in Little Horsted, Sussex.  They married by licence which was issued on 29 December 1694 by the Archdeaconry of Lewes.  The licence noted that he was from Lewes and she a spinster of West Firle.

Jane was baptised on 13 December 1668 in Isfield.  She was most probably buried on 6 September 1719 in Newhaven.  The burial register noted that she was a widow.

William and Jane had 5 known children:

    1. John Whitney was baptised on 15 November 1695 in Newhaven, Sussex.

    2. William Whitney was baptised on 28 August 1697 in Newhaven.  He married Mary Smart on 4 October 1724 in Selmeston, Sussex.

    3. Jane Whitney was baptised on 12 March 1698/9 in Newhaven.  She was buried on 12 March 1700 in Newhaven.  The burial register noted that she was the daughter of William and Jane who were poor.

    4. Thomas Whitney was baptised on 6 April 1702 in Newhaven.  He was most probably buried on 16 August 1751 in Newhaven.

    5. Elizabeth Whitney was baptised on 19 May 1704 in Newhaven.

    6. Jane Whitney was buried on 22 December 1714 in Newhaven.  The burial register noted that she was Jane Whitney, junior.

  2. Jane Whitny, my 8x Great Grandmother, was baptised on 29 March 1671 in Ringmer.  She married George Duffield in 1694.  (They have their own page.)

  3. John Whitney was baptised on 3 June 1674 in Ringmer.

  4. Tabitha Whitney was baptised on 7 November 1677 in Ringmer.
