William WHITEMAN
(1793-1867)
and Ellen FURNER (?-?)
and Sarah BURGESS (1801-1882)

William Whiteman first married Ellen Furner on 4 May 1815 in Brede, Sussex. The
witnesses to their marriage were William Whiteman and Mary
Whiteman. He then married Sarah Burgess by banns on 1
July 1822 in Bexhill. (They were not my direct
ancestors. William's aunt,
Mary Godfrey
Whiteman (1776-1845) was my 4x Great Grandmother.)
William Whiteman was baptised on 16 May 1793 in Udimore, Sussex.
He was the son of William
Whiteman (1773-1852) and
Mary Davis
(c1767-1847). William
died aged 74 years and his death was registered in the third quarter of
1867 in the Hastings registration district.
Ellen Furner's date and place of birth/baptism are
unknown, to me.
Sarah Burgis was born
on 1 February 1801 and baptised on 1 March 1801 in Ewhurst, Sussex.
She was the daughter of
William Burgis and Sarah. Sarah died aged 81 years
and her death was registered in the second quarter of 1882 in the Hastings
registration district.
When the 1841 census was recorded, William and Sarah together with 4
children and 62 year old Joseph Lew were living at Strand in
Winchelsea and William was then an agricultural labourer.
On 10
September 1842 a removal order was issued to the family returning them to Udimore from Winchelsea.
By 1851 they had moved to Hastings.
In 1861 the couple and their youngest son were living at 2 Mount Pleasant
in Hastings.
