William WHITEMAN (1793-1867)

and Ellen FURNER (?-?)

and Sarah BURGESS (1801-1882)

William Whiteman first married Ellen Furner on 4 May 1815 in Brede, Sussex.  The witnesses to their marriage were William Whiteman and Mary Whiteman.  He then married Sarah Burgess by banns on 1 July 1822 in Bexhill.  (They were not my direct ancestors.  William's aunt, Mary Godfrey Whiteman (1776-1845) was my 4x Great Grandmother.)

William Whiteman was baptised on 16 May 1793 in Udimore, Sussex.  He was the son of William Whiteman (1773-1852) and Mary Davis (c1767-1847).  William died aged 74 years and his death was registered in the third quarter of 1867 in the Hastings registration district.

Ellen Furner's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.

Sarah Burgis was born on 1 February 1801 and baptised on 1 March 1801 in Ewhurst, Sussex.  She was the daughter of William Burgis and Sarah.  Sarah died aged 81 years and her death was registered in the second quarter of 1882 in the Hastings registration district.

When the 1841 census was recorded, William and Sarah together with 4 children and 62 year old Joseph Lew were living at Strand in Winchelsea and William was then an agricultural labourer.

On 10 September 1842 a removal order was issued to the family returning them to Udimore from Winchelsea.

By 1851 they had moved to Hastings.  In 1861 the couple and their youngest son were living at 2 Mount Pleasant in Hastings.

William Whiteman and Ellen Furner had 2 known children:

  1. William Whiteman was born about 1816 in Udimore.  He died on 30 December 1892 in Waratah, NSW, Australia.  He emigrated to Australia in 1839.

William married Jane Tucker on 6 May 1849 in Australia.

    Please see:  www.ozigen.com/tree/p1998.htm

  2. Francis Alfred Whiteman was baptised on 2 August 1818 in Udimore.  His mother's name was recorded as Alice in the baptism register.

William Whiteman and Sarah Burgess had 5 known children:

  1. Alfred Whiteman was baptised on 21 February 1826 at the Wesleyan Chapel in Rye.  The 1841 census records that he was 14 year old Alfred Whiteman and he was then living with his parents.  He was 15 years old when the removal order was issued to his father.

  2. Spencer Whiteman was born about 1831 in Udimore, although his baptism does not seem to have been recorded in the Udimore parish register.  He was 8 years old in 1841.  On 10 September 1842 he was 11 years old.  In 1851 he was a 20 year old house servant in the home of 77 year old John Willis at All Saints Cottage in Hastings.

  3. Edwin Whiteman was baptised on 20 July 1834 in Udimore.  In 1841 he was 7 years old.  He was 8 years old when the removal order was issued in 1842.  He was a 16 year old house servant in 1851.
