Thomas WHITEMAN (1822-1916)

and Sarah J. WEEKS (?-1894)

Thomas Whiteman and Sarah J. Weeks married on 1 August 1841 at St. Andrew's Church, Parramatta, New South Wales, Australia.  He was then a bricklayer.  (They were not my direct ancestors.  Thomas was the great nephew of my 4x Great Grandmother.)

Thomas Whiteman was baptised on 3 February 1822 in Udimore, Sussex.  He was the son of Stephen Whiteman (1797-1890) and Ann Maria Eldridge (1798-1877).  At the time of his baptism his father was a bricklayer.  He died on 4 December 1916 at the district hospital in Parramatta and was buried on 6 December 1916 at the Methodist Cemetery, Parramatta.  His death certificate notes that he spent 5 years in South Australia and 1 year in Victoria.  He was named as a beneficiary in his father's will.  Thomas emigrated from Sussex to Australia in 1837 (see his parent's page for more details.)

Sarah J. Weeks may have been the daughter of James Weeks and Sarah Chapman.  She died in 1894.  (Greg Thomas is seeking more info on Sarah Weeks and unfortunately I'm not able to help, nor can I remember where I found, or who told me, that she was the daughter of James Weeks and Sarah Chapman.  I can not find a marriage for the couple in the Sussex marriage index, nor is there anything listed in the IGI for Kent.  Greg tells me that Sarah was born in Peasemarsh, Sussex, which borders Iden, Rye, Udimore, Brede and Beckly in Sussex and Wittersham in Kent.)

Thomas Whiteman and Sarah J. Weeks had 9 known children:

  1. Chapman Thomas Whiteman was born on 9 June 1844 in Parramatta.

  2. George Henry Whiteman was born on 3 February 1846 in Parramatta.

  3. Emily Eliza Whiteman was born in 1849 in Adelaide, South Australia.

  4. Sarah Jane Whiteman was born 15 June 1850 in Brighton, Adelaide.

  5. Annie Maria Whiteman was born in 1852 in Sydney.

  6. John Whiteman was born on 31 December 1853 in Melbourne.  He died on 19 September 1926.  When his son was born in 1894, John was said to have been a 43 year old carter and gave his place of birth as Melbourne, Victoria.  He then had 7 living children, 5 males and 2 females.

John married Caroline Mobbs in July 1881 in Parramatta, New South Wales.  He was then said to be 27 years old, and his parents were named as Thomas Whiteman and Sarah Weeks.

(Greg tells me Caroline was the daughter of William Mobbs who arrived in Australia on board the convict shop Barwell.)

John and Caroline had the following children:

    1. Percival Thomas Whiteman was born in 1881 and died in 1968 in Wyong.

    2. Spenser George Whiteman was born in 1883 and died in 1902 in Parramatta.

    3. Lionel Claude Whiteman was born in 1886 and died in 1944 in Parramatta.  Lionel married Edith and they had the following daughter:

      1. Edith Caroline Whiteman (Greg's grandmother)

    4. John Albert Whiteman was born in 1888 and died in 1960 in Parramatta.

    5. Lucy E. Whiteman was born in 1890.

    6. William Frank Whiteman was born in 1892 and died in 1962 in Burwood.

    7. Edward Donald Whiteman was born on 12 March 1894 in Gladstone Street, Parramatta.  He died on 5 August 1964 in Gladesville.

Edward married Rubina Peare in 1918 at Marrickville in Sydney.  They lived in Five Dock, New South Wales.  Rubina's parents emigrated from Plymouth, Devon in 1882 on board the "Peterborough".  They were originally from Middlesex, England.

Edward and Rubina had 2 sons:

      1. Donald R. Whiteman married Gwenn and they had 3 sons.

      2. Mervyn Andrew John Whiteman married Olive Morrell and they had 3 children.  He then married Lorraine Windsor and they had a daughter.

    8. Annie M. Whiteman was born in 1896 and died in 1902 in Parramatta.

    9. Nessie Whiteman was born in  1899.

  7. Stephen Whiteman was born on 9 October 1855 in Parramatta.

  8. James Whiteman was born in 1857 in Parramatta.

  9. Thomas Whiteman was born on 14 November 1858 in Parramatta.
