Reuben WHITE (c1640-?)

and Unknown (?-?)

 

Reuben White married before or about 1665 and possibly in or near Balcombe, Sussex, but no possible marriage has been found for him.  Might he have been the son of Reuben White and Elizabeth Wood who married in 1634?  (See further below)

 

Reuben White and Unknown had 2 known children:

  1. Judith White was baptised on 25 February 1665/6 in Balcombe.  She may have married my 7x Great Grandfather John Comber (1660-1729) in 1690 in Balcombe, Sussex.  Or instead, she may have married Thomas Dumbrill on 5 May 1698 in East Chiltington, Sussex.  (I have checked a transcript of the East Chiltington register and there were no further details recorded against their marriage, nor were there any Dumbrill children baptised in East Chiltington between 1700-25.)

  2. Robert White was baptised on 6 September 1668 in Balcombe.


 

Reuben White and Elizabeth Wood married by licence on 25 September 1634 in Hurstpierpoint, Sussex.  Their marriage licence was issued on the same day by the Archdeaconry of Lewes, which recorded that he was a yeoman of Horsham and she a spinster of Hurstpierpoint.  Sponsors of the licence were Reuben himself and Edward Brooker a yeoman of Hurstpierpoint.

Reuben and Elizabeth may have had the following children:

  1. William White was baptised on 29 November 1635 in Balcombe.  His mother's name was Elizabeth.

  2. Joane White was baptised on 14 July 1639 in Balcombe.  Only her father's name was recorded in the baptism register.

  3. Elizabeth White was baptised on 25 August 1644 in Balcombe.  Only her father's name was recorded in the baptism register.

  4. John White was baptised on 14 February 1646/7 in Balcombe.  Only his father's name was recorded in the baptism register.

 

George White of Balcombe left a will in 1674 (ref. A34-32)  dated 9 October 1674, wife Ann, George White eldest son, William youngest son, Elizabeth eldest daughter under 21, Ann youngest daughter under 21

Abraham White yeoman of Balcombe left a will in 1697 (ref. A43-9) dated 29 March 1697, son William, son John, son Henry, son Richard, daughter in law Timothy Potts

John White husbandman of Balcombe left a will in 1734 (ref. A54-251) daughter Sarah Smith, son Abraham under 21, wife Obedience

 

Nicholas White of Chiltington left a will in 1681 (ref. A35-362), proved at Lewes

Thomas White of Westmeston left a will in 1694 (ref. A42-26)

William White of Worth left a will in 1726 (ref. A52-196)

Richard White of Worth left a will in 1739 (ref. A56-96)

 

Roger Whyte was buried on 13 April 1610 in Balcombe.  (He would seem to have been the first White buried in Balcombe since the commencement of the registers in 1539.

Roger White married Mercy Butcher by licence dated 19 February 1609/10.  The licence was issued by the Archdeaconry of Lewes and noted that Roger was a hammerman and Mercy a spinster and they were both of Worth.  Surety for the licence was provided by Roger himself and Richard Butcher a husbandman.

 

John White was minister at Balcombe in 1616 and 1617.

 

John White and Joan Prior married on 11 February 1593/4 at St. John, Southover, Lewes.

John White and Elizabeth Gatland married on 9 November 1615 in West West Hoathly.

John White and Susan Citholin married on 22 September 1636 in Balcombe.

 

Elizabeth wife of John White the younger was buried on 13 February 1635/6 in Balcombe.

 

John White had the following children:

  1. Richard White was baptised on 9 January 1594/5 in Balcombe.  (He would see to have been the first White baptised in Balcombe since the commencement of the parish registers in 1539.)

  2. John White was baptised on 2 February 1596/7 in Balcombe.

  3. Ann White was baptised on 2 February 1599/1600 in Balcombe.

  4. William White was baptised on 4 October 1601 in Balcombe.

  5. Joan White was baptised on 15 April 1604 in Balcombe.

  6. Eleanor White was baptised on 18 September 1618 in Balcombe.  A marriage licence was issued on 26 September 1640 by the Archdeaconry of Lewes to Matthew Wheeler and Eleanor White.  He was a tailor of West Hoathly and she a spinster of Balcombe.

  7. Thomas White was baptised on 24 June 1621 in Balcombe.

  8. John White was baptised on 2 November 1623 in Balcombe.

  9. Henry White was baptised on 4 June 1626 in Balcombe.  His father was John, junior.  He or his uncle Henry was baptised on 8 June 1626 in Balcombe to John (junior or senior not mentioned).

  10. Robert White was baptised on 31 May 1629 in Balcombe.

  11. John White was baptised on 29 July 1637 in Balcombe.  John son of John was buried on 14 June 1639 in Balcombe.

  12. George White was baptised on 29 September 1639 in Balcombe.

 

A marriage licence was issued on 15 October 1688 by the Archdeaconry of Lewes to Elizabeth White and John Penfold.  She was a spinster of Balcombe and he was from Worth.  They married on 20 November 1688 in Balcombe.

 

Abraham White was baptised on 22 January 1631/2 in Worth, the son of John White and Frances

 

Abraham White had the following child:

  1. William White was baptised on 2 February 1655/6 in Balcombe.

 

Abraham White and Susan Pots married on 17 September 1673 in Balcombe.  Abraham White was buried on 27 April 1697 in Balcombe.  Susannah White was buried on 11 September 1696 in Balcombe.  Abraham and Susan had the following children:

  1. Richard White was baptised on 19 November 1674 in Balcombe.  He may have married Grace Jenner on 14 October 1697 in Balcombe.

  2. Henry White was baptised on 14 January 1676/7 in Balcombe.  He may have been buried on 10 April 1706 in Balcombe.

  3. Francis White was baptised on 23 May 1680 in Balcombe.  He was buried at a "young age" on 27 October 1682 in Balcombe.

  4. Abraham White was buried at a "young age" on 15 June 1681 in Balcombe.

 

John White and Sarah Paine married on 2 May 1683 in Balcombe.  John and Sarah had the following children:

  1. Sarah White was baptised on 30 August 1685 in Balcombe.

  2. Sarah White was baptised on 23 October 1686 in Balcombe.  She may have married Alan Smith on 15 May 1705 in Balcombe.

 

George White  and Jane Tanner married on 6 March 1681/2 at St. Michael's in Lewes.  Jane was buried on 30 November 1683 in Balcombe.  George and Jane had the following children:

  1. William White was buried at a "young age" on 11 November 1682 in Balcombe.

  2. Thomas White was baptised on 30 November 1683 in Balcombe.

George White and Frances Young married on 4 March 1683/4 in Balcombe.  Frances White was buried on 6 November 1698 in Balcombe.  They may have had the following children:

  1. Elizabeth White was baptised on 17 October 1684 in Balcombe.

  2. Anne White was baptised on 9 September 1688 in Balcombe.

 

George Whight and Ann Wright married on 17 December 1700 in Cuckfield.  He was a butcher from Balcombe and she a widow of Cuckfield.

On 7 October 1691, George White of Balcombe a master butcher, took on George Virgoe as an apprentice.

 

A marriage licence was issued on 29 June 1703 by the Archdeaconry of Lewes to John White of Balcombe and Mary Steere a spinster of Cuckfield.

 

Martyr White and Elizabeth Burtenshaw married by licence on 4 January 1670/1 at All Saints in Lewes.  Their marriage licence was issued on the same day by the Archdeaconry of Lewes, which noted that he was a bachelor and taylor of Balcombe and she a maiden of Cuckfield.  Surety was provided by Martyn himself and Thomas Rotherham a clockmaker of Lewes.

Martyn White was buried on 20 March 1707/8 in Balcombe.

 

Thomas White and Mary Brett married by licence on 29 December 1698 at All Saints in Lewes.  Their marriage licence was issued the day before by the Archdeaconry of Lewes, which recorded that he was a bachelor of Balcombe and she a spinster of the same place.

 

Judith White married John Seale of Kingston on 26 November 1640 at St. Michael's in Lewes.

    3. Matthew White (1617-?) married Alice.  She remarried in 1681.  They had the following children:

Richard White had the following children:

  1. Thomas White was baptised on 11 February 1713 in Worth and buried there on 17 July 1715.  His mother was Jane.

  2. Elizabeth White was baptised on 12 May 1718 in Worth.  Her mother was Elizabeth.

  3. Richard White was buried on 24 January 1721 in Worth.

  4. Sarah White was baptised on 20 February 1723/4 in Worth.  Her mother was Elizabeth.

  5. Nicholas White was baptised on 8 September 1728 in Worth.  His mother was Judith

  6. Judith White was baptised on 25 September 1728 in Worth.  No mother named.  (Another Judith White was born in 1622 and married in 1643.)

  7. Jone White was baptised on 27 February 1729/30 in Worth.  Her mother was Jude.

  8. Thomas White was baptised on 3 November 1731 in Worth.  His mother was Judith.

  9. Richard White was baptised on 10 June 1744 in Wisborough Green.  His mother was Judeth.

Richard White and Jane Rise married by licence on 1 May 1707 at St. Anne's in Lewes.  Their licence was issued on 20 April 1707 by the Archdeaconry of Lewes, which noted that he was a yeoman and she a spinster and they were both of Godstone in Surrey.  Her surname was spelt Trist in the marriage licence.

Richard White and Elizabeth Wates married by licence on 3 September 1717 at St. Michael's in Lewes.  Their marriage licence was issued on 5 September 1717 (as per the Sussex marriage index), by the Archdeaconry of Lewes, which noted that he was a hammersmith of Charlwood, Surrey and she a widow of Lewes.

Presumably, Richard was born around about 1690, although a 62 year old Richard White was buried on 25 December 1739 in Worth, therefore, born about 1677.  An 85 year old Richard White was also buried in Worth on 7 August 1733, therefore, born about, 1648.  And widow White aged 83 was buried on 23 August 1733.

Richard White married Sarah Penfold on 26 September 1676 in Worth.  They may have been the parents of the Richard baptised on 11 August 1678 in Maresfield.

A Jane White was buried on 2 June 1730 in Worth.

A Judith White wife of Richard was buried on 3 November 1731 in Worth. 

 

Richard White and Judith Powell married on 15 January 1723/4 in Alkham, Kent.  They may have had the following children:

  1. William White was baptised on 22 July 1726 at St. Mary the Virgin in Dover, Kent.

  2. Robert White was baptised on 31 January 1730 at St. Mary the Virgin, Dover, aged 3 years.

  3. Elizabeth White was baptised on 31 January 1730 at St. Mary the Virgin, Dover, aged 1 year.

  4. Richard White was baptised on 12 October 1731 at St. Mary the Virgin, Dover.

  5. Judith White was baptised on 26 August 1734 at St. Mary the Virgin, Dover.
