Peter WHITE (c1690-?)
and Sarah VINALL (1695-1722)

Peter White
and Sarah Vinall married on 16
June 1715 in Edburton, Sussex. At the time they were both of
Wivelsfield, Sussex. (They were not my direct ancestors.) (The
IGI records they married in Wivelsfield, but I have checked a transcript of
the Wivelsfield marriages, and their marriage was not recorded there.)
Peter
White's date and place of
birth/baptism are unknown, to me.
Sarah Vinall
may have been born on 8 November 1695 and baptised on 20 November 1695 in
Horsted Keynes, Sussex. If so, then she was the daughter of Thomas
Vinall and Alice Wright. The Balcombe burial register
records that a Sarah White was buried on 2 March 1721/2.
(The same day a daughter of Peter's was baptised.)
I have checked a
transcript of the Wivelsfield baptisms 1670-1700 and there was not a single
White baptised in the parish. There was a Mary Vennal,
daughter of Alice Vennal baptised in 1689, an Ann
Vinall in 1694, daughter of Ellis Vinall and a
Mary Verall, daughter of Edward Verall in
1699.
At the Quarter
Sessions in Lewes on 17/18 July 1729 it was recorded that the JP's ordered
the Churchwardens of Balcombe to seize £20 worth of goods from Peter
White, labourer, late of the same, who has run away leaving 4 small
children chargeable to the parish.
Peter
White and Sarah Vinall had 4 known children:
-
Peter White was baptised on 19 April 1717 in Balcombe.
He may have been buried on 8 April 1748 in Balcombe.
-
Sarah White was baptised on 5 December 1718 in Balcombe.
-
James White was baptised on 16 January 1719/20 in Balcombe.
He may have been buried on 15 April 1722 in Balcombe, if so there would
have been another child born to Peter before 1729.
-
Judith
White was baptised on 2 March 1721/2 in Balcombe. She
married
George Box (1723-1801) in 1743. (They have their own page.)
Peter and Sarah were the only White couple to have had children baptised in
Balcombe at that time.
A Judith White was baptised in Balcombe in 1666, the daughter of
Reuben White. Could the above family be in some related?
Another Judith White was baptised in East Grinstead in 1666, the
daughter of Thomas White and
Ann Langridge. One of the
1666 Judith's was the Grandmother of the George Box married to 1722
Judith White, as mentioned above.
A Mr. Peter White of Lewes married Susanna
Tettersell of Standen/Ditchling, on 16 June 1702 in Pyecombe.
He was probably the Peter White baptised on 3 March 1671/2
at All Saints in Lewes, the son of Benjamin White a gent of
Lewes and Dorothy Courthope of the Hurstpierpoint Courthope
family.
