William WEST (1796-1852)
and Elizabeth AMAS (c1788-?)

William West and Elizabeth Amas married by
banns on 12 April 1819 in Brighton, Sussex. He was then a bachelor and
she a spinster and they were both of Brighton. (They were not my
direct ancestors.)
William James West was born about 1797 in Ashburnham, Sussex.
Might he have been the son of William West and Lucy
Martin, who had married in Ashburnham on 2 April 1796? (A
database at Ancestry notes that he was baptised on 24 July 1796 at Warbleton,
Sussex and was the son of William West and Lucy
Martin. The database also records that he died on 12 December
1852 in Brighton.) It is also thought he may have died in 1857.
Elizabeth Amas was born about 1788 in Keninghall, Norfolk.
At the time of the 1841 census the couple and their 3 children were living
at 10 St. George Street, Brighton, and William was earning his living as a
carpenter. In 1851 couple and 2 of their children were still living at
10 St. George Street, Brighton. William was then a 54 year old
carpenter and Elizabeth was 63.
William West and Elizabeth Amas had
4 known children:
-
Mary Ann West was born about 1821 in Brighton. In 1841
she was 20 years old and living at home. She was still living with
her parents at the time of the 1851 census and she was then an unmarried
30 year old.
-
Hannah
West was born/baptised on 25 July 1823 in Brighton and died in
infancy. (I have taken these details from a database at Ancestry.)
-
Isaac
West was born about 1826 in Brighton. (A database at
Ancestry notes he was born on 2 April 1826, died on 29 October 1865 and
buried on 5 November 1865 at Lambeth cemetery.) He was a 15 year
old carpenter in 1841 and living at home with his parents. The
1851 census records that he was a married 25 year old coach maker and
was boarding in the home of 63 year old widow Elizabeth Feist
at 46 Blackman Street, Brighton. However, his then wife was not
living at the same address. By 1861 he was living at 16 Cross
Street, Battersea, London along with his 25 year old wife, Jane
and their young daughter Mary Ann West who was 2 years
old. Isaac was then a 35 year old carpenter. Jane gave her
place of birth as Southampton.
-
Jesse West was born
about 1828 in Brighton. He married
Esther Peters in
1851. (They have their own page.)
