Richard WEST (c1450-1522)

and Parnell (?-?)

 

Richard West married Parnell.

Richard West was of Billingshurst, Sussex.  His will was dated 10 December 1521 and proved on 6 February 1521/2.  He requested to be buried in Billingshurst Church.  He held lands called Renner in Pulborough and Northlands in Wisborough Green and he had a house at Hardfoldsherne.  The overseers of his will were John Segrave and Richard Hunt.  In his will he mentioned his daughters and his sister's daughter, Elizabeth Cooper.

Parnell was appointed an executrix of her husband's will.

I have taken the following details from John Comber's Sussex Genealogies for the Horsham Centre.  So far I have no known connection to following, but I do have West ancestors from Billingshurst and Cowfold.

 

Richard West and Parnell had the following known children:

  1. John West was a yeoman of Slinfold.  He was an executor of his father's will and was then under 21.  He held Rownes and Northlands.  His will was dated 12 October 1550 and proved on 8 February 1551.  The overseer of his will were John Carryll, Esq.

    John married Agnes and she was an executrix of her husband's will.

    John and Agnes had the following children:

    1. John West was a yeoman of Slinfold.  He was an executor of his father's will.  He also held Rownes and Northlands.  His will was dated 1 November and proved on 5 November 1566.  The overseers of his will were Richard Bush a skinner of London and Ralph Cowper of Slinfold.

      John married Johane and she was an executrix to her husband's will.

      John and Johane had the following children:

      1. Allen West was of Torton.  He was mentioned in his father's will of 1566 and was then under 21.  His will was dated 29 April and proved on 17 May 1596.  The executors of his will were his friend William Gorringe, Esq., brother William Mylles, brother Thomas Palmer and uncle Henry West.  Overseers of his will were named as Sir Thomas Palmer and William Wintersall, Esq.  Allen held lands in Pulborough, Wisborough Green and Billingshurst.  He also had a farm in Felpham which came to him at the death of his cousin Allen Wyatt.  Allen West was appointed and executor of the 1593/4 will of Allen Wyatt.    He was appointed an executor of the 1587 will of Richard Gratwicke of Hardham.

        Allen married Mary Mill by licence issued by the Bishop of London on 11 September 1583.  They were to be married at St. Magnus in London.  Mary was the daughter of Richard Mill of Greatham.  She was alive in 1596.

        Allen and Mary had the following children:

        1. Margaret West was mentioned in her father's will at which time she was under 18.  She was also mentioned in her great uncle Henry West's will of 1602.  Margaret married Thomas Butts of Weybridge, Surrey.

        2. Mary West was mentioned in her father's will and was then under 18.  She was also mentioned in her great uncle Henry's will.  Mary married John Michell of Houghton.

        3. Catherine West was mentioned in her father's will and was under 18.  She was also mentioned in her great uncle Henry's will

      2. Henry West was of Billingshurst and afterwards a yeoman of Brighton.  He received copyhold lands in Billingshurst under the terms of his father's will.  He was also mentioned in his uncle Henry West's 1602 will.

        Henry married Dionisia Burredge by licence at Lewes on 2 November 1595.

        Dionisia was the daughter of Bartholomew Burredge of Burton and Brighton and Dionisia daugther of Edward Scras of Blatchington.

        Henry and Dionisia had the following children:

        1. Nicholas West was mentioned in the 1602 will of Henry West of Houghton, at which time he was under 21.  Nicholas was also mentioned in his sister's 1621 will.

        2. Edward West was mentioned in the 1602 will of Henry West of Houghton, at which time he was under 21.  Nicholas was also mentioned in his sister's 1621 will.

        3. Ellen West was of Brighton.  She left a will dated 23 October 1621 and proved on 13 July 1622.  The executor and principal legatee of her estate was her kinsman Richard Scras of Brighton.  She also mentioned her kinsman Henry Burrage.

      3. Ann West was mentioned in her father's will and that of her brother Allen.  Ann married Thomas Clares.

      4. Dorothy West was mentioned in her father's will and that of her brother Allen.  Dorothy married John Nye on 26 February 1578/9 in Wisborough Green.

      5. Mary West was mentioned in her father's will and that of her brother Allen.  Mary married [blank] Tilsey.

    2. Henry West was of Houghton.  He held lands there under his father's will of 1550.  He was an executor of his nephew Allen West's will of 1596.  His will was dated 22 July and proved on 11 September 1602.  He requested to be buried in the porch of Houghton church.  The overseers of his will were William Mylles, cousin Edward Darknall and George Rose.  Henry was an executor of his cousin George Hunt's will.

    3. John West, the younger.  He was mentioned in his father's 1550 will and was then under 22.

    4. Allen West was mentioned in his father's will, by which he received Slymefold.

    5. Mary West was mentioned in her father's will.

    6. Dorothy West was mentioned in her father's will.  She was buried on 7 April 1574 in Felpham.  Dorothy married Thomas Wyatt of Flansham on 1 February 1561/2 in Felpham, as his second wife.  Thomas married 3 times.  His will was dated 5 April 1591 and proved on 5 January 1591/2.

  2. Richard West was a yeoman of Billingshurst.  He inherited a house and lands in Billingshurst from his father.  He was under 21 in 1521.  His will was dated 29 October 1550 and proved on 9 June 1551.  The overseer of his will was Walter Greenfield, senior.

    Richard married Jane Patching.  She was the daughter of William Patching of Horsham.  She was an executrix of her husband's will.

    Richard and Jane had the following children:

    1. Richard West was a yeoman of Billingshurst.  He was mentioned in his father 1550 will.  Richard was appointed an executor to his grandmother, Elizabeth Michell's 1562 will.  His own will was dated 24 September and proved on 16 October 1591 and again at Chichester on 9 October 1607.  The overseers of his will were John Roberts of Cowfold and sons-in-law John Evershed and Richard Naldrett.

      Richard married Margery Ockenden on 25 September 1558 in Cowfold.  She was mentioned in her husband's will.

      Richard and Margery had the following children:

      1. Mary West was baptised on 1 January 1559 in Rudgwick.  She was said to be 35 years old at her brother's 1597 inquest.  Her will was dated 23 July and proved on 18 November 1635.

        Mary first married Richard Naldrett a yeoman of Rudgwick.  He was buried on 18 May 1596 in Rudgwick and inquest was dated 3 November 1596.  His will was dated 6 May and proved on 18 May 1696.  His wife Mary was appointed an executrix.

        Mary then married Nicholas Chaloner of Chiltington and Edburton on 1 June 1598 at Edburton.  Nicholas was buried on 16 August 1613 in Edburton.  His will was dated 6 December 1612 and proved on 13 Janaury 1613.

        Mary had children by both husbands.

      2. Dorothy West was baptised on 5 October 1561 in Rudgwick.  She was mentioned in her father's will and was said to have beens 30 years old at her brother's 1597 inquest.  Dorothy died before 1610.

        Dorothy married John Backshell of Sele, alias Beeding by licence dated 15 May 1591.

        John was of Northstoke, Hayling, Southampton, Hampshire.  He died on 20 March 1624.  His will was dated 16 March 1624 and proved on 24 January 1624/5.  He held Kellers, Fosters, Tuckmans, etc, in West Grinstead, Sussex and Northwood in Hayling.

        John married for a second time to Susan Huggett, widow of Southover.  Their marriage licence was issued on 5 November 1610 by the Archdeaconry of of Lewes.

        John and Dorothy had the following children:

        1. John Backshell was buried in Upper Beeding on 18 February 1635/6.  He was an overseer to the 1630 will of John Roberts and the 1634 will of Thomas Roberts.

          John married Ann Roberts on 13 August 1616 in Cowfold.

          Ann was was baptised on 17 August 1600 in Cowfold and was the daughter of John Roberts (1570-1630) and Anne Gratwick (1575-?).

        2. Thomas Backshell was a yeoman of Hayling.  He married Margaret Holmes by licence dated 13 October 1621.

        3. William Backshell was of Hayling in 1627.  He was named as executor to his father's 1624 will.  He married Ann Paye by licence dated 6 December 1627.

        4. Joan Backshell was named in her father's will.  She married Thomas Huggett a tanner of Steyning on 4 May 1614.

      3. Elizabeth West was baptised on 8 February 1563 in Rudgwick.  She was said to be 26 years old at the time of her brother's 1597 inquest.  Elizabeth married John Evershed of Ockley, Surrey.

      4. Ann West was baptised on 22 March 1566 in Rudgwick.  She was mentioned in her father's will and was said to be 24 years old at the time of her brother's 1597 inquest.  Ann married John Seale.  She may have remarried [blank] Plowfote and was mentioned in her sister Mary's will of 1635.

      5. Richard West was baptised on 6 June 1569 in Rudgwick, Sussex.  He died before 1597.

      6. Thomas West was baptised on 12 February 1571 in Rudgwick.  He died on 3 May 1597 and an inquest was dated 3 November 1597.  He was a yeoman of Billingshurst.  He was an executor of his father's 1591 will.

    2. Elizabeth West was mentioned in her father's will.

    3. Bridget West was mentioned in her father's will.  She was also mentioned in the 1562 will of her grandmother.

    4. Eleanor West was mentioned in her father's will.

    5. Jane West was mentioned in her father's will.

    6. Catherine West was mentioned in her father's will.

  3. Henry West was mentioned in his father's will, by which he received the house known as Hardfoldsherne.

  4. Daughters were also mentioned in Richard's will.
