Nicholas WEST (1636-1711)

and Anne MITCHELL (1633-?)

St. Peter's, Cowfold, February 1884 - from: West and Anne Mitchell were my 8x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They married on 29 May 1662 at the parish church of St. Peter in Cowfold, Sussex.

Nicholas West was baptised on 23 February 1635/6 in Bolney, Sussex.  He was the son of Edward West (c1610-1662) and Joan (?-1653).  He was buried on 18 January 1710/1 in Bolney.

Anne Mitchell may have been baptised on 19 May 1633 in Bolney and have been the daughter of John Mitchell.

Nicholas West and Anne Mitchell had 6 known children:

  1. John West was baptised on 22 January 1663/4 in Cowfold.

  2. Nicholas West, my 7x Great Grandfather, was baptised on 31 October 1665 in Cowfold.  He married Hannah Denman in 1700.  (They have their own page.)

  3. Ann West was baptised on 14 October 1668 in Cowfold.

  4. Thomas West was baptised on 1 December 1672 in Cowfold.  He was buried on 29 September 1751 in Bolney.  His death was reported to the Beeding Manorial Court on 14 November 1751.

Thomas married Susanna Newnham on 27 April 1669 in Ardingly, Sussex.

Drewitts, Cowfold, circa 1910 - from: Beeding Manorial Records record that on 30 July 1737, Thomas West and his wife Susanna, surrendered Drewitts, 50 acres in Cowfold, to Stephen Whales a yeoman of Cowfold.  Then on 1 June 1738 they again surrendered Drewitts to Thomas Field a yeoman of Hurstpierpoint, as security for 156.  Thomas and Susanna had paid off the loan by 6 October 1742 and they again surrendered Drewitts, this time to William Unwins for a loan of 150.  They next surrender Drewitts to Frances Board of Lindfield, as security for 150 at 4 percent.  It was then recorded on 3 October 1750 that Thomas West had again surrendered Drewitts, this time to Elizabeth West a spinster of Portslade (who I believe was his youngest daughter) as security for a loan of 150 at 4 percent interest until 28 March 1749.  (Drewitts is located in the top right hand corner of the parish of Cowfold and borders the parishes of Slaugham and Bolney.  The property had previously been held by Thomas's grandfather Edward West.)

Thomas and Susanna had 6 known children:

    1. Susanna West was baptised on 19 August 1701 in Hurstpierpoint, Sussex.  She died as child and was buried on 27 November 1706 in Bolney, Sussex.  Her name was recorded as Susana Wesstt in the burial register.

    2. Mary West was baptised on 7 April 1703 in Bolney.

    3. Sarah Weestt was baptised on 17 September 1704 in Bolney.

    4. Elizabeth Wesstt was baptised on 30 October 1707 in Bolney.  She married William Vallance by licence on 12 February 1750/1 at St. Anne's in Lewes, Sussex.  They were both then of Portslade, Sussex.

    5. Edward Weesstt was baptised on 7 December 1710 in Bolney.  He died in Cowfold and was buried on 15 September 1755 in Bolney.  At the death of his father in 1751, Edward as only son and heir, inherited Drewitts in Cowfold.  This he bequeathed to his youngest sister, Elizabeth Vallance.

    6. Charles West was baptised on 16 December 1715 in Bolney and buried there on 9 March 1737/8.

  5. Mary West was baptised on 12 September 1665 in Cowfold.

  6. Joan West was baptised on 12 February 1677/8 in Cowfold and was buried there on 26 June 1678.
