John WEST
(1762-1830)
and Phoebe TULET (1784-1874)

John West and Phoebe Tulet married by banns on 27 December
1804 in the parish church of St. Peter's in Cowfold, Sussex. They were
both then of Cowfold. The witnesses were William Richardson and
William Hills. (They were not my direct ancestors. John
was the brother of my 4x Great Grandmother, Ann West.)
John West was baptised on 5 August 1762 in Cowfold. He was the
son of William
West (1731-1762) and
Mary Richardson
(1740-?). He died in 1830.
Phoebe Tulet was baptised on 8 August 1784 in Shermanbury, Sussex.
She was the daughter of
William
Tullett (1757-1817) and
Phoebe
Virgo (c1760-1836). She died aged 89 years in 1874.
In 1841 Phoebe was described as a yeoman of
Frith Knowle, Cowfold. By 1851 she was a farmer of 36 acres employing
2 labourers, at South Firle Knole.
John and Phoebe are buried together in Cowfold and their monument
inscription reads:

John West and Phoebe
Tulet had 9 known children:

John West was baptised on 27 October 1805 in Cowfold.

William West was born about 1806 in Cowfold. He died in 1875
and was buried in Cowfold.
William married Louisa Matthews by
banns on 6 May 1835 in Cowfold. He was then a bachelor and she a
spinster and they were both of Cowfold.
Louisa was baptised on 16
September 1810 in Shermanbury and was the daughter of James Matthews
and Elizabeth Dewdney. She died in 1894 and was buried in
Cowfold.
In 1851 the family were living at Hookland in Cowfold,
where William was an agricultural labourer. By 1861 they were living
at Crabtree Gate in Cowfold. In 1881, Louisa was living at Frithe
Knowle in Cowfold where she was described as an annuitant and the head of
the household.

William and Louisa had 7 known children:

Ann West was baptised on 26 July 1835 in Cowfold.

Frederick West was baptised on 1 August 1837 in Cowfold and
buried there on 6 August 1837.

Emma West was baptised on 16 September 1838 in Cowfold. She
married Thomas Churchill in 1874. He was a bootmaker.
Emma was staying with her mother when the 1881 census was recorded.

William West was baptised on 31 July 1842 in Cowfold.
-
Sarah West was baptised on 15 June 1845 in Clayton, Sussex.
-
Mary West was baptised on 29 October 1848 in Cowfold. In
1881 she was 32 years old, single and unemployed and living with her
mother.

Albert West was baptised on 1 June 1851 in Cowfold.
Henry West was baptised on 23 October 1808 in Cowfold. In
1881 he was a 72 year old unmarried agricultural labourer living with his
sister-in-law, Louisa West. He
died in 1888 and was buried in Cowfold. His monument inscription
reads:

Sarah West was baptised on 18 March 1811 in Cowfold. She
married William Hollamby on 10 May 1836 in Hurstpierpoint, Sussex.
He was then of Street, Sussex. Sarah was a widow by the time of the
1881 census and living with her sister-in-law, Louisa West.
Nicholas West was baptised on 21 February 1813 in Cowfold. He
died in 1897. He was a widower by 1881 living with his son John and
his family.
Nicholas married Mary Smith by banns on 9 April 1842 in Horsham.
He was a bachelor and labourer and she a spinster. Their fathers
were named as John West a farmer and Thomas
Smith a labourer. The witnesses to their marriage were
James Kempshall and Eliza Smith.
Mary was baptised on 7 March 1813 in Ashurst and was the daughter of
Thomas Smith and
Lucy
Stringer.
In 1851 the couple and 3 children (Ann, Mary and John) were living in
Ockley Cottage in Keymer. Nicholas and Mary were both 38 years old
and he was an agricultural labourer. He gave his place of birth as
Cowfold and she as Ashurst.
When the 1871 census was recorded the couple were living in the home of
William Rawley at Hassocks Farm in Keymer. They
were both 57 years old. Nicholas was a farm servant from Cowfold
and Mary a housekeeper from Ashurst. Also part of the household
was 18 year old
Esther
Taylor.
Nicholas and Mary had the
following children:

Ann West was baptised on 6 April 1845 in Wivelsfield, Sussex.
She was a 6 year old scholar in 1851.

Mary West was baptised on 1 November 1846 in Wivelsfield.
She was a 4 year old scholar in 1851.
-
John West was born in 1850 in Keymer, Sussex. At the time
of the 1851 census he was 11 months old.
John married
Emily Golds on 16 April 1876 in Hurstpierpoint.
Emily was
baptised on 4 November 1849 in Hurstpierpoint and was the daughter of
Job Golds (1820-1888) and Ann King (c1828-1897).
In 1881 they were living in the High Street, Hurstpierpoint and John was
a journeyman blacksmith. Also with them then were 2 children, 4
year old Harry A. West and 3 year old George F.
West.
James West was baptised on 9 October 1814 in Cowfold.
Mary West was baptised on 6/27 October 1816 in Cowfold.
Ann West was baptised on 3 January 1819 in Cowfold. She died
in 1835.
David West was baptised on 14 October 1821 in Cowfold. He
died in 1900. David married Jane Luck in 1819.
