Jesse WEST (c1828-1896)
and Esther PETERS (1830-1898)

Jesse West and Esther Peters married in
the second quarter of 1851 in the Brighton, Sussex registration district. (A database at
Ancestry records they married on 14 June 1851 at the Old Preston parish
church.)
Jesse West was born about 1828 in Brighton. (A
database at Ancestry gives his date of birth as 15 September 1828.) He was
the son of William West
(1796-?) and
Elizabeth Amas (c1788-?). He died
aged 68 years and his death was registered in the fourth quarter of 1896 in
Brighton. (The same Ancestry database notes he died on 8 October 1896
at 29 Red Cross Street, Brighton.) At the time of the 1841 census he
was 12 years old and living with his parents and elder siblings at 10 St.
George Street, Brighton. When the 1851 census was recorded he was an unmarried 22 year old carpenter
living with his parents at 10 St. George Street. His father
was also a carpenter. Jessie was know in the family as 'the
woodworker'.
Hesther Peters was baptised on 11 January 1830 in Upper
Beeding, Sussex. She was the daughter of James Peters
and Anne Tomsett. At the time of her baptism her father was a
labourer. She died aged 68 years and her death was registered in the
first quarter of 1898 in Brighton. When the 1841 census was recorded
she was an 11 year old servant in the home of milkman William
Tomsett and his wife Sarah in Oxford Street,
Brighton. (I assume William was her Uncle.) In 1851 she was a 21
year old laundress and living at 30 Red Cross Street, Brighton, the home of
the 26 year old carpenter Louis Snelling and his wife and
child.
When the 1861 census
was recorded the couple and 5 children were living at 18 Wellington Terrace in
Brighton, along with the family John Pelling and his wife Jane
and their 2 young children. Jesse was then a 31 year old carpenter and
joiner and Esther a 30 year old laundress. In 1871 the couple and 7
children were living at 40 Cobden Road, Brighton. The 1881 census
strangely records his name as Joseph. The couple and their 2 youngest
daughters were still at 40 Cobden Road. By 1891 Jesse and Esther were
living alone at 40 Cobden Road. He was a 62 year old carpenter and she a
61 year old laundress.
