James WEST (1787-1866)

and Ann GOBLE (c1787-1857)

James West and Ann Goble married by banns on 2 November 1807 in East Dean, Sussex.  He was then a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of East Dean.  The witnesses to their marriage were William Goble and Robert Phillia.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

James West was baptised on 15 April 1787 in East Dean.  He was the son of Thomas Bridger West (c1761-1831) and Ann Till (1757-1829).  He died aged 80 years and was buried on 6 August 1866 in East Dean.

Ann Goble was born about 1787 in East Dean, as per the 1851 census, but no baptism appears there for her.  She was most probably baptised on 6 January 1788 in Easebourne, and have been the daughter of William Goble (1761-1839) and Ann Clere (1764-1829).  Ann died aged 70 years and was buried on 9 December 1857 in East Dean.

Before her marriage Ann had an illegitimate son, however, James and Ann were witnesses to the marriage of George Seagrave and Jane Norrell on 8 October 1806 in East Dean, so might James have been the father of Ann's child:

  1. George Goble was born on 8 October 1807 and baptised on 8 November 1807 in East Dean.  He married Phoebe Osborne in 1830.  (They have their own page.)

When the 1851 census was recorded the couple were living in East Dean.  They were both aged 63 years and James was a woodcutter.  Two of their unmarried sons were then living with them as well as their married daughter Louisa and her husband and children.

James West and Ann Goble had 9 known children:

  2. Frances West was baptised on 8 March 1812 in East Dean.

  3. David West was baptised on 13 March 1814 in East Dean.  The baptism register noted that his father was a labourer.  He died aged 38 years in Westhampnett and was buried on 21 March 1852 in East Dean.

David married Ann Maria Harbour on 1 June 1836 in Bepton, Sussex.  He was then a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of Bepton.

Ann Maria died aged 27 years and was buried on 5 August 1845 in East Dean.

When the 1851 census was recorded, David was a 36 year old pauper and labourer living in the Westhampnett union workhouse along with his 4 children.

Louisa married Thomas Horne by banns on 25 December 1844 in East Dean.  He was a bachelor and labourer and she a spinster.  Their fathers were named as Charles Horne and James West who were both labourers.  The witnesses to their marriage were Caroline Eliza Bridger and Benjamin Bridger.

Thomas was born about 1823 in Aldingbourne.

In 1851 the couple and their 2 children were living with Louisa parents.  Thomas was a 28 year old gardener and Louisa was said to be 30 years old.

William married Sarah Austin on 4 April 1855 in East Dean.  He was a bachelor and labourer and she a spinster.  Their fathers were named as James West a labourer and Harry Austin a blacksmith.  The witnesses to their marriage were George Smith and Charlotte Austin.

Sarah was baptised on 16 November 1831 in East Dean, at which time her father was a blacksmith from Molecomb.  She was the daughter of Harry Austin and Ruth Norrell.

In 1871 the couple and 4 children were living in East Dean and William was a 46 year old labourer in woods.  Sarah was 39.

William and Sarah had the following known children:
