William WEDGE (1712-1773)

and Love(ly) (c1720-1782)

William Wedge and Love(ly) married sometime before 1746 or 1741.  (They were probably not my direct ancestors.  One of their sons married my 5x Great Grandmother, but had probably died before the birth of her son, my 4x Great Grandfather.)

William Wedge may have been baptised on 11 June 1712 in Bosham, Sussex, and have been the son of Philip Wedge (?-1751) and Margaret Hellyer (?-1739).  He was buried on 28 July 1773 in South Bersted.

Lovely's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  Love Wedge was buried on 4 February 1782 in South Bersted.

William Wedge and Love(ly) had 4 or 5 known children:

  1. Winifred Wedg may have been part of this family.  She was baptised on 22 March 1740/1 in Felpham as the daughter of William and Leah (as per a transcript of the Felpham registers, but William and Sore in the IGI).  She married Thomas Burnet by banns on 2 November 1769 in Oving, Sussex, at which time they were both of Oving.  The witnesses to their marriage were John Fallick and Jacob Broadbridge.  Winifred, wife of Thomas Burnet was buried on 10 December 1770 in Oving.

  2. John Wedge was baptised on 16 November 1746 in South Bersted, Sussex.  His mother's name was Lovely.  He was most probably buried in Birdham, Sussex on 30 January 1822, however, the burial register noted that he was 80 years old, which would put his birth at about 1741/2.

John married Ann Burcher by licence on 10 July 1765 in South Bersted.  Their marriage licence was issued on 9 July 1765 by Pagham and Tarring Peculiar and recorded that John was a 17 (I would think this should be 19) year old bachelor and husbandman of South Bersted and that he married with the consent of William Wedge.  Ann was an 18 year old of Felpham, Sussex and married with the consent of her uncle Thomas Heward.

Ann died aged 73 years and was buried on 16 September 1818 in Birdham, Sussex.

John and Ann had the following children:

    1. Elizabeth Wedge was baptised on 1 May 1768 in Birdham, Sussex.

    2. William Wedge was baptised on 5 March 1770 in Birdham.

    3. John Wedge was baptised on 1 December 1771 in Birdham.

    4. Thomas Wedge was baptised on 22 August 1773 in Birdham.

    5. Sarah Wedge was baptised on 11 August 1776 in Birdham.

    6. Matthew Wedge was baptised on 30 May 1779 in Birdham.

    7. Anne Wedge was baptised on 4 April 1781 in Birdham.

    8. Hannah Wedge was baptised on 3 October 1784 in Birdham.

  3. Richard Wedge was baptised on 30 May 1749 in North Mundham, Sussex.  His mother's name was Love.

  4. Thomas Wedge was baptised on 18 November 1750 in South Bersted.  His mother's name was Love.  He married Ann Gibbins in 1770.  (They have their own page.)

  5. A son was baptised on 7 December 1755 in South Berstead.  His mother's name was Love.
