My Wedge Ancestors
My 4x Great Grandfather,
John Wedge, was baptised in 1781 at St. Pancras in Chichester, Sussex
the illegitimate son of
Ann Widge
a widow. As Ann Gibbins she had married
Thomas Wedge in 1770. John died
aged 56 in November 1833, therefore, he was born about 1777. As
John Vadge he married
Mary Freeman of
Ashurst, Sussex, in Ashurst in 1807 at which time he was also said to have been
of Ashurst - neither were able to sign their names. Checking back through
the Ashurst registers, the Freemans were there, but not the Wedges. I
found their marriage because on the 1851 census Mary was living with her son
William Wedge,
my 3x Great Grandfather, and her place of birth was given as Ashurst.
John and Mary married on 7 May 1807 in Ashurst and their first child, John
Wedge, was born about July 1807 - he died aged 58 years and 8 months in
March 1866 - and the census says he was born in Shipley, Sussex. Their
next 2 children were also born in Shipley in 1809 and 1813, but by 1818 the
family had settled in Pulborough, Sussex.
My 3x Great Grandfather,
William Wedge
was born in Shipley and baptised there on 11 June 1809. On 20 October 1833
he married Sarah
Mills in Bury, Sussex. She was born in Pulborough, and the couple
were back in Pulborough by 11 September 1834 for the baptism of their first
known child. I found their marriage in the Sussex Family History Group's
marriage index, and have yet to check the original entry for details.
William and Sarah's third child and eldest daughter was my 2x Great Grandmother,
Mary Wedge, who was born on 3 May 1840 in Pulborough. At that time,
William was a Carter. When the 1841 and subsequent census were recorded,
William was an Agricultural Labourer of Pidgeons Gate in Pulborough.
Mary Wedge married my 2x Great Grandfather
George Willard (1835-1902)
on 29 August 1857 in Pulborough, giving her age as 18, although she was only 17
years and 4 months. Their first child was baptised on 18 December 1857.
Mary and George had settled in Portslade, Sussex by 1866 and were still there
when the 1901 census was recorded.
