Joseph WARD
(c1685-1723)
and Mary VINNALL (c1685-1733)

Joseph Ward
and
Mary Vinnall
were my probable 7x Great
Grandparents.
(Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)
They married by licence on 20 February 1709/10 at
St. Ann's in Lewes, Sussex. Her name was recorded as Mary Vynall
in the marriage licence and Mary Vennal in the marriage register.
She may even have been Mary Verrall.
Joseph
Ward's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.
Might he have been the son of Thomas Ward and Elizabeth Burt,
widow who married in West Grinstead in 1670? The IGI
records that a Joseph Ward was baptised on 15 September 1691 in
Sidlsham, Sussex, the son of Joseph Ward and Mary. The
couple had had a previous son named Joseph baptised on 27 July 1686, but
presumably he died young. Sidlesham to Lewes is about 40 miles, and as
Sidlesham Joseph would have been about 18 or 19 at the time of the 1710
marriage, I am not so sure that the two Joseph's were one and the same.
A check of the Sidlesham burial register is called for. Joseph was
probably buried in Henfield on 11 March 1722/3. He was not baptised in
Henfield or West Grinstead between 1670-1690.
Mary Vinnall's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.
Mary may have been buried on 30 November 1733 in Henfield.
Given that her last known child was born in early 1723, I would think the
earliest Mary was born was 1675. And as she married in 1710, I would
think she was born before 1692. She may have been born in the parish
in which she married, but IGI does not record a possible baptism for her as
either Vinnall or Verrall (at some point I'll check the St. Ann's baptism
register). A Mary Vinal was baptised in Chailey in 1684 to
Walter Vinal and Mary Holford and another in Chailey in 1690 to
John Vinall and Mary Johnson. There was also a Mary
Vinal baptised in Cuckfield in 1687 to Thomas Vinal and Mary
Dumbrell. In Clayton in 1690 a Mary Virrall was baptised to
John Virrall and Mary Wood. I am not inclined to think
any of these four baptisms are for Mary wife of Joseph.
Joseph Ward and Mary
Vinnall had 8 known children:
-
John Ward
was born on 21 January and baptised on 2 February 1710/11 in Henfield,
Sussex. He may have married
Elizabeth Tooth
in 1733 and then
Elizabeth Gander in 1741. (They have their own page.)
-
Mary Ward
was born on 18 March and baptised on 27 March 1712/3 in Henfield.
She was buried in Bolney, Sussex on 12 May 1771. She married John
Saunder on 25 January 1731/2 in Henfield.
John and Mary had 12
known children:
-
Michael
Saunders was baptised on 7 March 1735/6 in Bolney.
-
Betty
Saunders was baptised on 28 October 1738 in Bolney.
-
William
Saunders was baptised on 16 May 1741 in Bolney. He died
aged 71 years was buried
in Bolney on 18 August 1812. William married
Elizabeth Richardson
on 15 April 1773 in Cowfold. The witnesses to the marriage were
Isaac Anscomb and Mary West. Elizabeth was baptised on
9 June 1745 in Bolney and was the daughter of
Francis Richardson
(1706-1760) and Mary (?-1753) (Francis and Mary were my 6x Great
Grandparents). William and Elizabeth had 2 known children:
-
Mary
Saunders was baptised on 20 February 1774 in Bolney.
-
Elizabeth
Saunders was baptised on 18 July 1779 in Bolney.
-
Dina

Sojourners.
-
Charles
Saunders was baptised on 5 November 1745 in Bolney.

1777 by the Archdeaconry of Lewes, which stated that he was a bachelor
and husbandman aged 24 and upwards. She was a spinster aged 23 and
upwards.
-
Samuel
Saunders was baptised on 15 February 1756 in Bolney.
-
Elizabeth
Saunders was buried in Bolney on 10 May 1757. She may not have
been baptised.
-
Joseph Ward
was born on 16 September and baptised on 24 September 1714 in Henfield.
He may have died as an infant and certainly before 1723.
-
Thomas Ward,
my possible 6x Great Grandfather,
was born on 28 May and baptised on 6 June 1716 in Henfield. He married
Mary Caplin
in 1740. (They have their own page.)
-
William Ward
was born on 29 July and baptised on 3 August 1718 in Henfield. He
may have been buried on 5 October 1805 in Henfield, but the burial
may also refer to the
William Hill Ward who was born in 1803, or more likely the
William Ward who was born in 1805.
William married Ann Foreman on 30 September 1748 in Ditchling,
Sussex. He was then said to be of Henfield.
William and Ann had 3 known children:
-
Philip Ward
was born on 18 March and baptised 9 April 1749 in Henfield.
-
Michael Ward
was born on 27 July and baptised on 10 August 1755 in Henfield. He
married Mary Shoulder by licence on 7 December 1783 in Edburton,
Sussex. Their marriage licence was issued by the Archdeaconry of
Lewes on 5 December 1783. It recorded that he was a bachelor and
carpenter of Henfield aged 26 years and upwards.
Michael and Mary had the following children:
-
Francis Ward
(daughter) was baptised on 7 October 1786 in Henfield. Her parents
were then described as paupers and exempt from paying the baptism fee.
-
Susanah Ward was baptised on 8 February
1789 in Henfield. Her parents were then described as paupers and
exempt from paying the baptism fee. She may have had an illegitimate
son:
William Ward was baptised privately on
29 September 1805 in Henfield. He was probably buried on 5 October
1805 in Henfield, but there was a
William Ward
born in 1718 and William Hill Ward in 1803, as mentioned above.
-
Phebe Ward
was privately baptised on 21 October 1792 in Henfield. Her parents
were then described as paupers and exempt from paying the baptism fee.
She was received into the church on 4 November 1792.
-
Phoebe Ward
was born on 13 May and baptised on 22 May 1757 in Henfield. She may
have married William Vinall by bann on 30 April 1778 in Henfield.
He was then a bachelor and described as William junior and she was a
spinster. They were married by the curate Miles Williams.
The witnesses to the marriage were Richard Pattenden and
Elizabeth Ware.
-
Betty Ward
was born on 29 February and baptised on 11 March 1719/20 in Henfield.
-
James Ward
was born on 8 August and baptised on 13 August 1721 in Henfield. He
may have been buried there on 2 June 1748.
-
Joseph Ward
was born on 12 February and baptised on 22 February 1722/3 in Henfield.
Joseph was buried on 12 March 1768 in Henfield. He married Dorothy Copper
on 1 August 1743 in Henfield. Dorothy
was buried in Henfield on 2 March 1765 as the late wife of Joseph Ward.
