John WARD (1711-1766)

and Elizabeth TOOTH (c1710-1739)

and Elizabeth GANDER (c1715-1781)

John Ward may have married twice.  Firstly to Elizabeth Tooth on 8 June 1733.  And then to Elizabeth Gander on 5 May 1741.  Both marriages took place in Henfield, Sussex.  (They were not my direct ancestors.  John was the brother of Thomas Ward, who most probably was my 6x great grandfather.)

John Ward was born on 21 January and baptised on 2 February 1710/11 in Henfield, Sussex.  He was the son of Joseph Ward (c1685-1723) and Mary Vinnall (c1685-1733).  He was buried on 9 April 1766 in Henfield.

Elizabeth Tooth's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  She was probably buried on 25 October 1739 in Henfield.

Elizabeth Gander's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  She was buried on 17 September 1781 in Henfield and the burial register recorded that Elizabeth Ward was a widow.

Neither Elizabeth Tooth nor Elizabeth Gander would seem to have been baptised in Henfield.  I have checked a transcript of the Henfield baptism register from 1700-20 and did not find any Tooth or Gander baptisms.

John Ward and Elizabeth Tooth had 1 known child:

  1. Ann Ward was born and baptised on 27 January 1736/7 in Henfield.  She was received into the church on 23 February.  She may have been buried on 11 May 1742 in Henfield.

John Ward and Elizabeth Gander had 5 known children:

  1. Elizabeth Ward was born on 1 May and baptised on 16 May 1742 in Henfield.

  2. Charles Ward was born and baptised on 15 May 1743/4 in Henfield.  He was received into the church on 27 March 1744.  He died on 8 January 1811 in Henfield.  He died aged 66 years and was buried on 13 January 1811 in Henfield.

Charles married Mary Hards by banns on 20 July 1768 in Henfield.  He was then a bachelor and she a spinster.  The witnesses to the marriage were Nathaniel Johnson and William Vinall.  They were married by the curate, Miles Williams.

Mary may have been buried on 5 April 1804 in Henfield.

Charles and Mary had the following children:

    1. Charles Ward was baptised on 12 March 1769 in Henfield.  He may have been buried on 27 July 1775 in Henfield.

    2. Sarah Ward was baptised on 6 October 1771 in Henfield.  She married Edmund Pronger in 1799.  (They have their own page.)

    3. John Ward was born on 18 August and baptised on 5 September 1773 in Henfield.  He died on 6 June 1841 in Henfield.

John married Sarah Peskett on by banns 27 May 1798 in Henfield.  At the time he was a bachelor and she a spinster, and they were both of Henfield.  The witnesses to the marriage were Josias Woolgar and Martha Stonstreet.

When the 1841 census was recorded, Sarah was living in Church Street, Henfield along with 3 grown up children.

John and Sarah had the following children:

      1. Mary Ward was baptised on 22 July 1798 in Henfield.

      2. Catherine Ward was privately baptised on 17 November 1799 in Henfield and received into the church on 8 December.  She had an illegitimate son:

        1. George Ward was baptised on 7 September 1823 in Henfield, at which time his mother was a servant.

      3. Charles Ward was baptised on 8 March 1801 in Henfield.

      4. James Ward was baptised on 14 November 1802 in Henfield.

      5. John Ward was baptised on 19 February 1804 in Henfield.

      6. Peter Ward was baptised on 3 March 1805 in Henfield.

      7. Frances Ward was baptised on 24 January 1808 in Henfield.  When the 1841 census was recorded she was a 30 year old living at home with her mother.

      8. William Ward was baptised privately on 9 December 1810 in Henfield.  He was received into the church on 1 April 1811.

      9. Sarah Ann Ward was born on 21 July and baptised on 18 August 1811 in Henfield.

      10. Maria Ward was baptised on 3 July 1814 in Henfield, at which time her father was a labourer.

      11. Robert Ward was baptised on 29 October 1815 in Henfield, at which time his father was a carpenter.  The 1841 census records that he was then a 25 year old carpenter.

      12. Stephen Ward was baptised on 25 July 1819 in Henfield.  At the time of his baptism the family were living in Church Yard, Henfield and his father was a carpenter.

      13. Susannah Ward was baptised on 14 October 1820 in Henfield and her family were then living in Church Yard and her father was a carpenter.

      14. Richard Ward was a 20 year old gunsmith in 1841.

  3. George Ward was born on 23 April and baptised on 7 May 1746 in Henfield.  He may have been buried on 5 October 1805 in Henfield.

  4. Ann Ward was born on 5 April and baptised on 29 April 1748 in Henfield.  She may have been buried on 20 April 1800 in Henfield, but the burial may also refer to the Ann Ward born in 1783 or the Ann Ward who was born in 1791.

  5. Sarah Ward was born on 17 March 1750/1 and baptised on 25 March 1751 in Henfield.
