Henry WARD (1754-?)

and Mary GEERE (c1755-?)

Henry Ward and Mary Geere married by banns on 27 November 1780 in Henfield, Sussex.  He was then a bachelor and she a spinster and sojourner.  The witnesses to the marriage were Edward Stenning and William Vinall.  (They were not my direct ancestors.  Henry was the brother of my possible 5x Great Grandmother, Mary Ward.)

Henry Ward was born on 3 August and baptised on 11 August 1754 in Henfield.  He was the son of Thomas Ward (1716-1783) and Mary Caplin (1714-1755).  A Henry Ward was buried on 3 April 1805 and another on 5 September 1812, both in Henfield.

Mary Geere's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  She may have been baptised on 8 October 1758 in Hurstpierpoint, Sussex and have been the daughter of Samuel Gear (1719-1795) and Mary Terry (1729-1796).  Or she may have been baptised on 29 August 1761 in West Grinstead, Sussex and have been the daughter of Richard Geer and Hannah Killick.  A Mary Ward was buried in Henfield on 5 April 1804.

Henry Ward and Mary Geere had 11 known children:

  1. Elizabeth Ward was born on 22 April 1781 in Henfield.  She may have been buried on 17 September 1781 in Henfield.

  2. Ann Ward was born on 9 February 1783 in Henfield.  She may have been buried on 20 April 1800 in Henfield, but the burial may also refer to the Ann Ward who was born in 1748 or the Ann Ward born in 1791.

  3. Charles Ward was baptised on 30 January 1785 in Henfield.  His parents paid the 3 pence fee to have him baptised.  He married Mahala Vinall in 1804.  (They have their own page.)

  4. Phoebe Ward was baptised on 14 January 1787 in Henfield.  Her parents paid the 3 pence baptism fee.

  5. Lucy Ward was privately baptised, as she was ill, on 6 February 1790 in Henfield.  She married Lancaster Lelliott in 1817.  (They have their own page.)

  6. Lydia Ward was baptised on 29 January 1792 in Henfield.  Her parents paid the 3 pence baptism fee.  She may have married John Vinall by banns on 4 November 1816 in Brighton.  He was then a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of Brighton.

  7. Samuel Ward was baptised on 9 February 1794 in Henfield.  His parents were then described as paupers and exempt from paying the baptism fee.  He was buried on 6 November 1795 in Henfield.

  8. Philip Ward was born on 7 February 1796.  He died aged 73 years (according to the burial register) and was buried on 8 May 1867 in Henfield.

Philip married twice, firstly to Elizabeth Mobsby by licence on 5 January 1819 in Cowfold.  He was then a bachelor of Henfield and she a spinster of Cowfold.

Elizabeth was baptised on 20 October 1799 in Cowfold and was the daughter of William Mobsby (1759-?) and Sarah Bachelor.  Elizabeth died aged 27 years and was buried on 15 April 1827 in Henfield.

Philip and Elizabeth had 4 known children:

    1. Henry Ward was baptised on 4 July 1819 in Henfield.  At the time his father was a labourer of Terry's Farm in Henfield.  Henry probably died as an infant.

    2. Henry Ward was baptised on 16 July 1820 in Henfield.  At the time his father was a labourer of Church Street in Henfield.

    3. James Ward was baptised on 6 May 1821 in Henfield.  At the time his father was a labourer of Church Street.

    4. William Ward was baptised on 13 April 1823 in Henfield.  At the time his father was a bricklayer of Henfield.

Philip then married Frances Pollard by banns on 12 June 1834 in Henfield.  He was a widower and she a spinster and they were both of Henfield.  The witnesses to the marriage were Edward Woolgar and Sarah Woolgar.

Frances was baptised on 23 December 1804 in Cowfold and was the daughter of James Pollard and Sarah Martin.  She died aged 62 years and was buried on 10 February 1867 in Henfield.

  9. Harriet Ward was born on 4 February 1798.  She may have married William King by banns on 26 October 1818 in Brighton.  He was then a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of Brighton.

  10. Henry Ward was born on 20 October 1799.

  11. Charlotte Ward was baptised on 27 June 1802 in Henfield.
