Luke WADEY (1794-1863)

and Charlotte CHAMPION (1796-1860)

 

Luke Wadey and Charlotte Champion married by banns on 7 August 1821 in Billingshurst, Sussex.  He was a bachelor and she a spinster who married with the consent of parents.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

Luke Wady was baptised on 2 February 1794 in Pulborough, Sussex.  He was the son of James Wady and Ann Court.  He died aged 67 years and was buried on 15 May 1861 in Billingshurst.  The burial register noted his name as Luke Wadey.

Charlotte Champion was baptised on 31 July 1796 in Billingshurst, Sussex.  She was the daughter of James Champion and Sarah.  She died aged 63 years and was buried on 17 March 1860 in Billingshurst.  The burial register noted her name as Charlotte Wadey.

When the 1851 census was recorded the couple and 3 children (Harriett, William and Walter) were living at Alicks Hills in Billingshurst.  Luke was a 57 year old master wheelwright and blacksmith employing 6 men (3 smiths and 3 wheelwights).  He gave his place of birth as Pulborough.  Charlotte was 54 and born in Billingshurst.  Also with the family were 2 nephews, namely David Child a 19 year old wheelwright form Ewhurst, Surrey and 9 year old scholar George Hughes from Chelsea, Middlesex.  The also had 2 servants, namely William Hills a 21 year old journeyman blacksmith from Godalming, Surrey and 11 year old James Wood an intended apprentice wheelwright from Storrington.

 

Luke Wadey and Charlotte Champion had 5 known children:

  1. James Champion Wadey was baptised on 13 January 1822 in Billingshurst.  The baptism register noted his father was a wheelwright.

  2. Harriett Wadey was baptised on 30 March 1823 in Billingshurst.  The baptism register noted her father was a wheelwright.  In 1851 she was an unmarried 28 year old milliner.

  3. Caroline Wadey was baptised on 30 October 1825 in Billingshurst.  The baptism register noted her father was a wheelwright.

  4. William Wadey was baptised on 20 July 1828 in Billingshurst.  The baptism register noted his father was a wheelwright.  In 1851 he was an unmarried 22 year old journeyman wheelwright.

  5. Walter Wady was baptised on 9 January 1831 in Billingshurst.  In 1851 he was a 20 year old journeyman wheelwright.
