Luke WADY (1760-1816)

and Elizabeth HAILER (c1770-1857)

Luke Wady and Elizabeth Hailer married by banns on 30 December 1789 in West Chiltington, Sussex.  He was then a bachelor from Petworth and she a spinster of West Chiltington.  The witnesses to their marriage were Charlwood Hammond and Honor White.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

Luke Wady was baptised on 24 February 1760 in Pulborough, Sussex.  He was the son of Luke Wady (1733-1775) and Priscilla Hayler (1740-1827).  He died aged 56 years and was buried on 9 November 1816 in Petworth, Sussex.

Elizabeth Hailer's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  Might she have been baptised on 28 January 1768 in Pulborough, the daughter of John Hayler and Mary Collins, or on 26 February 1769 in Pulborough, the daughter of Hugh Hayler and Elizabeth Mitchell?

As a widow, Elizabeth Wadey may have married John Tuckey, widower by banns on 8 February 1824 in Cocking, Sussex.  They were both then of Cocking.  The witnesses to their marriage were William Hewett and William Baigent.

When the 1851 census was recorded, Elizabeth Tukey was an 82 year old widow living in the Street, Cocking, in the home of 67 year old Thomas Jenner and his 56 year old wife Hannah.  Elizabeth gave her place of birth as Nutbourne, Sussex.  (Nutbourne is between Pulborough and West Chiltington.)

An Elizabeth Tuckey died aged 87 years from old age and was buried on 18 January 1857 in Cocking, therefore, born about 1770.

Luke Wady and Elizabeth Hailer had 7 known children:

  1. Luke Wady was baptised on 21 March 1790 in Petworth.  He died aged 4 years and was buried on 28 June 1794 in Petworth.

  2. William Wady was baptised on 8 May 1791 in Petworth.  He may have died aged 87 years and have been buried on 26 February 1874 in Heyshott, Sussex, therefore, born about 1787.

He may have been the William Wady who was a witness to the 1824 marriage of Abraham Wady and Ann Collins.

When the 1851 census was recorded he may have been 63 year old William Wadey, born Petworth, lodging in the home of Esther Powell in St. Pancrass Street, Chichester.  William was then a married pedlar and also part of the household was married 37 year old Elizabeth Wadey who had been born in Deptford, Kent.

  3. Hannah Wady was baptised on 17 February 1793 in Petworth.  She died aged 43 years and was buried on 7 June 1835 in Cocking.

Hannah married Henry Wingham by banns on 14 June 1814 in Cocking.  She was then a spinster and he a bachelor and they were both of Cocking.  The witnesses to their marriage were Richard Smith and Charlotte Smith.

Henry was baptised on 18 November 1787 in Bepton, Sussex and was the son of Benjamin Wingham and Hannah Horton.  He died aged 63 years and was buried on 10 March 1850 in Cocking.

Henry and Hannah had the following children:

  4. Harriott Wady was born on 16 September 1798 and baptised on 30 September 1798 in Petworth.  She died aged 41 years and was buried on 18 December 1840 in Bepton.  The burial register noted her name as Harriette Wingham.

Harriet married Benjamin Wingham by banns on 19 May 1818 in West Dean, Sussex.  She was a spinster and he a bachelor and they were both of West Dean.  The witnesses to their marriage were William Webb and John Ayling.

Benjamin was baptised on 26 April 1789 in Bepton, Sussex and was the son of Benjamin Wingham and Hannah Horton.  He died aged 82 years and was buried on 10 October 1871 in Bepton.

Eliza may have married Daniel Lucas by banns on 9 February 1822 in Cocking.  He was said to be a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of Cocking.  The witnesses to their marriage were John Kingshott and Hannah??.
