James VINE (c1600-?)

and unknown (?-?)

and Rachel COLEMAN (?-?)

James Vine was my 10x Great Grandfather.  So far I have not been able to locate the date and place of his first marriage which proabably about 1619/20.  He may have married for a second time to Rachel Coleman by licence on 28 December 1628 in Laughton, Sussex.  Their marriage licence was issued on 27 December 1628 by the Archdeaconry of Lewes.  They were both then of Laughton and Rachel was a spinster.  The sponsors of the licence were James himself and Walter Hall a Freemason of Heathfield.  Neither the marriage licence or entry in the marriage register described James a widower.

James Vine's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.

Rachel Coleman's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.

James Vine and unknown had 4 known children:

  1. Alexander Vine was baptised on 5 June 1620 in Laughton.

  2. Joan Vine, my 9x Great Grandmother, was baptised on 6 May 1621 in Laughton, Sussex.  She married 5 237 Thomas Tanner in 1655.  (They have their own page.)

  3. Thomas Vine was baptised on 10 February 1622/3 in Laughton.  He was buried on 15 March 1677/8 in Laughton.

Thomas married Mary Warde on 19 June 1649 in Laughton.

Mary was buried on 2 February 1680/1 in Laughton and an affidavit was made by Joane Vine on 7 February 1680/1 stating that Mary was “buried in Woolen”.

Thomas and Mary had 10 known children:

    1. James Vine (1650-?)

    2. Joan Vine (1652-?)

    3. Mary Vine (1654-?)

    4. Elizabeth Vine (1656-?)

    5. Thomas Vine (1658-1673)

    6. John Vine (1661-?)

    7. Ann Vine (1664-1665)

    8. John Vine (1665-1666)

    9. Jane Vine (1667-1669)

    10. Alexander Vine (1671-?)

  4. Phenice Vine (daughter) was baptised on 20 January 1625/6 in Laughton.

A Susan Vine was buried on 14 September 1634 in Laughton and the burial register records that she was the daughter of James Vine.

There may also have been a son Richard Vine who was buried on 13 November 1668 in Laughton.  Richard married Ann Mathew on 4 November 1645 in Ringmer.  Ann was buried on 18 January 1657/8 in Laughton.  Richard and Ann had 5 known children:  Alexander Vine (1648-?), Edmund Vine (1650-?), Stephen Vine (1652-?), Elizabeth Vine (1654-1658) and Matthew Vine (1656-?).

James Vine and Rachel Coleman had 8 known children:

  1. John Vine was baptised on 2 January 1629/30 in Laughton.

  2. Alexander Vine was baptised on 1 January 1630/1 in Laughton.  He married Margaret Inskip on 2 January 1657/8 in Laughton.

Alexander and Margaret had 9 known children:

    1. James Vine (1659-?)

    2. Alexander Vine (1662-?)

    3. John Vine (1665-?)

    4. Elizabeth Vine (1667-?)

    5. Charles Vine (1669-?)

    6. Thomas Vine (1671-?)

    7. Richard Vine (1674-?)

    8. Susan Vine (1677-?)

    9. Margaret Vine (1680-?)

  3. John Vine was baptised on 13 October 1633 in Laughton.

  4. Charles Vine was baptised on 24 February 1633/4 in Laughton.  He, or his nephew, was buried on 5 July 1670 in Laughton.

  5. Elizabeth Vine was baptised on 1 October 1637 in Laughton and buried there on 30 April 1741.

  6. Mary Vine was baptised on 4 April 1641 in Laughton and buried there on 21 April 1741.

  7. An infant was buried on 1 June 1643 in Laughton.

  8. Elisabeth Vine was baptised on 10 June 1644 in Laughton.

An Alexander Vine was born in about 1604 and married Margaret Wever on 16 April 1629 in Hellingly.  They had 8 known children baptised in Hellingly:

  1. Ann Vine (1630-?)

  2. Samuel Vine (1633-?)

  3. Elizabeth Vine (1636-?)

  4. James Vine (1637-?)

  5. Sarah Vine (1641-?)

  6. Rachell Vine (1642-1642)

  7. Marie Vine (1643-?)

  8. John Vine (1645-?)

Might Alexander of Hellingly be the brother of James of Laughton?
