John VENNOL (c1650-1680)
and Susanna PAYNE (c1655-?)
John Vinall and Susan Payne married on 4
April 1678 in West Hoathly, Sussex. He was then of West Hoathly and
she of East Grinstead. This has come from a transcript of the Bishop's
Transcripts. The Sussex marriage index gives that John Vennol
and Susanna Payne married on 6 April 1678 in West Hoathly,
and doesn't say where they were from.
John Vennol's date and place of birth/baptism are unknown,
to me. He doesn't appear to have been baptised in West Hoathly, but
might he have been the son of
Thomas Vennoll and
Jane, or maybe John
Vinnoll and Joan, or even
Henry Vennoll and
Mary, or some other couple? A John Vennoll was buried on 21 October 1680 in West
Hoathly. I can't be certain that the John who was buried, was the
husband of Susanna, but they don't appear to have had any children after
1680.
Susanna Payne may have been baptised in East Grinstead on:
15 April 1654, Susanna Paine the
daughter of Thomas Paine and Joan, or
21 July 1657, Susan Paine the daughter of
Robert Paine
and Lydia, or
5 September 1658, Susan Payne the
daughter of
Edward Paine and Elizabeth (no
as she died in 1661).
The West Hoathly burial register records that
Susannah Vennoll was buried on 14 August 1689, but there was a
Susanna
Vennoll baptised in West Hoathly on 26 August 1688.
After John's death, did she marry
William Vaux
by licence on 10 May 1681 at St. Anne's
parish church in Lewes, Sussex? Her name was then recorded as
Susan Vinall. Their marriage licence was
issued on the same day by the Archdeaconry of Lewes which noted that they
were both of Ardingly, whereas their marriage entry recorded that he was of
Ardingly whilst she was of West Hoathly. Neither the licence or
marriage entry recorded whether William or Susan were single or a
widower/widow. Previously, as William Box he had
married Mary Vynall or Vennall on 17 June
1679 in Ardingly. She was buried 17 February 1679/80 in Ardingly.
I wonder if Mary was a sister of John?

Vennol and Susanna Payne had 2 known children:

Jane Vennoll was baptised on 18 April 1679 in West
Hoathly. She may have been buried on 8 June 1686 in West Hoathly.
The burial register notes that Jane Vennoll was young.

18 May 1680 in West Hoathly. As John Vinall he
may have married
Jane Hams
or Harris on 2 June 1719 in West Hoathly.
