James VAUGHAN (c1834-1911)
and Matilda FIELD (1834-1916)

James Vaughan and Matilda Field married on 22 July 1854 in
Slaugham, Sussex. Their marriage certificate recorded that his
father's name was James Vaughan. (They were not my direct
ancestors.)
James Vaughan was born about 1834 in Bolney, Sussex. He was the
son of James Vaughan and Sarah Stanford. He may have
died aged 80 years and his death may have been registered in the fourth
quarter of 1911 in the Cuckfield registration district. When the 1841
census was recorded he was 7 years old and living with his parents in
Cuckfield, Sussex. (There was another
James Vaughan born about 1833 in Staplefield, Sussex, the son of
Henry Vaughan and
Ann Bartley Comber.)
Matilda Field was baptised on 25 May 1834 in Slaugham and was the
daughter of William Field and Sarah Orton. Matilda died
aged 81 years and her death was registered in the second quarter of 1916 in
the Cuckfield registration district.
At the time of the 1861 census the couple and 2 young children were living
in Colwood Cottage in Slaugham and James was a 28 year old agricultural
labourer. In 1871 the family were living in Colwood Lane. When
the 1881 census was recorded the family were living at Homewood Cottage in
Bolney and James was then an agricultural labourer. Also with them at
that time was their 1 year old grandson Henry Vaughan. Their
next door neighbours were then the family of
William
Scutt. The 1891 census records that the couple were living in
Old Kennels in Cuckfield along with their daughter Harriet and 10 year old
grandson Henry. By 1901 all their children had left home and the
couple were still living at Old Kennels along with their grandson Henry.
