William TULET
(1799-1878)
and Charlotte WOODMAN (c1802-1886)

William
Tullett and Charlotte Woodman married by banns on 12 October 1824
at the parish church of St. George in West Grinstead, Sussex. He was
then of West Grinstead and she of Horsham, Sussex. The witnesses to
the marriage were William Patching and Edward Freeman.
(Edward was most probably a church warden as he witnessed several marriages
at that time.) (They were not my direct ancestors, but my mother's
maiden name was Tullett and so I am interested in all Tullett families, just
to make sure I'm on the right track with my own.)
William Tulet
was baptised on 22 September 1799 at the parish church of St. James in
Ashurst, Sussex. He was the son of
John Tullett
(1775-1843) and
Rachel Tullett (1779-1860). William died aged 78 years and was
buried on 20 January 1878 in Ashurst. He was a labourer.
Charlotte
Woodman
was born about 1802 in Horsham. She was the daughter of John
Woodman and Charlotte. Charlotte died aged 84 years and was
buried on 2 January 1887.
When the 1841
census was recorded the family were living in West Grinstead, at what looks
like ---ting Wick, and William was an agricultural labourer.
William Tullett and Charlotte
Woodman had 7 known children:
-
William Tulett
was baptised on 29 May 1825 in Shipley, Sussex. (He was not the
William Tulett
who married
Lucy Laker
in 1845.) He died aged 73 years and his death was registered in the
third quarter of 1898 in the Brighton registration district. When
the 1851 census was recorded he was lodging at 69 Pimlico, Brighton, the
home of Richard Tullett and his wife and children.
William married Rosina Reeves in the third quarter of 1854 in the
Brighton registration district.
Rosina was born about 1832 in Brighton. The 1861 census records her
name as Rosana.
When the 1861 census was recorded the family were living at 37 Essex
Place, Brighton and William was a bricklayer's labourer. The 1871
census records that the couple and their 6 children were living at 18
Islingwood Place in Brighton and William was a labourer. In 1881 the
couple and their 5 children were living at 50 Scotland Street, Brighton
and William was a bricklayer's labourer. When the 1891 census was
recorded 65 year old William and 59 year old Rosina, who was born in
Brighton, were living at 58 Wichelo Place in Brighton, along with
William's unmarried 53 year old brother, Alfred Tullett. The
brothers both then gave their place of birth as West Grinstead.
William was then earning his living as a general labourer, whilst Alfred
was a carpenter.
William and Rosina had the following children:
-
William
Tullett was born about 1857 in Brighton. He was a 4 year old
scholar in 1861. In 1871 he was a 14 year old labourer.
-
Rosina Tullett
was baptised on 3 January 1858 at St. Nicholas in Brighton. Like her
mother, her name was recorded as Rosana in the 1861 census and she
was then 3 years old. In 1871 she was 13 years old. She
was an unmarried 23 year old servant living at home in 1881.
-
Emily Tullet
was baptised on 4 March 1860 at St. Nicholas in Brighton. In 1861
she was a year old. She was 11 years old in 1871.

quarter of 1857 in the Steyning registration district.
On 10 January 1863, Allen and Ellen were witnesses to the marriage of her
brother Walter in West Grinstead. When the 1881 census
was recorded the couple were living at Bines Green in Ashurst and Allen
was then a 49 year old grocer employing 1 assistant. Also with them
was Ellen's widowed mother and 16 year old Walter Tullett who was a
