William TULLETT
(1786-?)
and Phoebe HILLS (c1790-?)

William Tullett
and Phoebe Hills married by banns on 5 September 1807 in
Slaugham, Sussex. He was then of Cowfold, Sussex and she was of
Slaugham. (They were not my direct ancestors.)
William Tullett
may have been born about 1786-8 in Cowfold and have been the son of
William Tullett
(1757-1817) and Phoebe
Virgo (1760-1836). He may have died between 1851 and
1861.
Phoebe
Hills date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me. She
may have died before 1835.
When the 1841
census was recorded William was a 54 year old agricultural labourer and he
was living at Rackingham Hall, Slaugham, along with his son John, 27 year
old servant Ann Vincent and their 2 children. In
1851, William was a 63 year old widower and agricultural labourer and he was
living at Badlands in Slaugham along with 43 year old unmarried housekeeper
Ann Vincent and their 3 children and his son John.
Ann Vincent
was born about 1803 in Keymer, Sussex. When the 1861 census was
recorded, Ann was a 54 year old agricultural labourer's widow and she was
lodging in the home of 77 year old widower John Backshall
at Courts Cottage in Cuckfield. Her son George was also with her.
William Tullett and Phoebe Hills
had 6 or 7 known children:

Mary Tullett may have been part of this family.

James Tullett
was baptised on 23 November 1810 in Slaugham. Did he marry
Elizabeth Moore in
1837? (They have their own page.)

John Tullett was baptised on 14 June 1812 in Slaugham.
He was 28 years in 1841 and living with his father. In 1851 he was
an unmarried 37 year old agricultural labourer and he was living with
his father.

Eliza Tullett was baptised on 26 November 1815 in
Slaugham.

Jesse Tullett was baptised on 24 May 1818 in Slaugham.
Jesse died aged 29 years and was buried on 20 August 1848 in Crawley.
Jesse married Susannah Thornton on 3 October 1846 in
Ifield.
Susannah was born on 10 April 1821 and baptised on 13 May 1821 in Crawley,
and was the daughter of William Thornton and
Sarah Charman. At the time of her baptism her father was
a labourer. When the 1851 census was recorded she was a 29 year
old widow and housekeeper in the home of 29 year old grocer John
Knight in Crawley (his surname was transcribes as Kendle in the
index).
After Jesse's death, his widow Suannah Tullett married
Jesse Jenner on 30 October 1853 in Ifield.
Jesse and Susannah had the following child:

Eliza Jessie Tulit was baptised on 17 October
1847 in Crawley. The baptism register noted that her father
was a grocer. She died aged 37 years and her death was
registered in the fourth quarter of 1884 in the Medway registration
district as Eliza Jessie Chapman.
When the 1851 census was recorded she was 3
years old and living with the family of her 49 year old Uncle
Henry Thornton at the The Street in Ifrield.
In 1861 she was a 13 year old servant and nursery girl in the home
of Albert Taylor at 45-46 Trafalgar Street,
Brighton. Her place of birth was then given as Ifield.
Eliza had the following son:

Charles Jesse Tulett was born in the Horsham
Union workhouse and baptised on 12 May
1872 in Horsham. When the 1881 census was recorded he was
8 year old Charles Elcom and he was scholar.
He was then living in the home of 50 year old Jesse
Jenner and his 59 year old wife Susannah,
at West Green, Ifield. Charles was described as their
nephew.
Eliza Jessie Tullett married James Elcom
in the fourth quarter of 1874 in the Dover registration district.
James died aged 43 years and his death was registered in the third
quarter of 1878 in the Dover registration district.
James and Eliza had 3 known children:

Frederick Thomas Elcom was born in the first
quarter of 1875 in the Dover registration district.

Susan Jane Elcom was born in the fourth quarter
of 1876 in the Dover registration district and baptised on 17
September 1876 at Holy Trinity, Dover.

Sarah Annie Elcom was born in the second
quarter of 1878 in the Dover registration district and baptised
on 26 May 1878 at Holy Trinity, Dover. Her
death was registered in the third quarter of 1878 in the Dover
registration district.
Eliza Jessie Elcom married George
William Chapman in
the third quarter of 1883 in the Medway registration district.

Henry Tullett was baptised on 1 October 1820 in Slaugham.

Harriet Tullett was born on 14 May 1822 in Slaugham and
baptised at the Providence Chapel in Staplefield on 14 July 1822.
William Tullett and Ann Vincent had 3 known children:
-
George Vincent was baptised on 2 August 1835 in
Slaugham. In 1841 he was 5 years old. The 1851 census
records that he was 16 year old George Tullett and he
was an agricultural labourer. He was an unmarried 25 year old
agricultural labourer in 1861 and living with his mother.

Amos Vincent was baptised on 16 June 1839 in Slaugham.
In 1841 he was 2 years old. The 1851 census records that he was 11
year old Amos Tullett and he was an agricultural
labourer. In 1861, Amos Vincent was an unmarried
21 year old agricultural labourer lodging in the home of Walter
Field in Slaugham.

Richard Vincent was born about 1842 in Slaugham.
When the 1851 census was recorded he was 9 year old Richard
Tullett and he was a 9 year old agricultural labourer. A
Richard Vincent son of Ann Vincent was
baptised on 26 April 1857 in Slaugham.
