William TULLETT (1786-?)

and Phoebe HILLS (c1790-?)

William Tullett and Phoebe Hills married by banns on 5 September 1807 in Slaugham, Sussex.  He was then of Cowfold, Sussex and she was of Slaugham.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

William Tullett may have been born about 1786-8 in Cowfold and have been the son of William Tullett (1757-1817) and Phoebe Virgo (1760-1836).  He may have died between 1851 and 1861.

Phoebe Hills date and place of birth/baptism are unknown, to me.  She may have died before 1835.

When the 1841 census was recorded William was a 54 year old agricultural labourer and he was living at Rackingham Hall, Slaugham, along with his son John, 27 year old servant Ann Vincent and their 2 children.  In 1851, William was a 63 year old widower and agricultural labourer and he was living at Badlands in Slaugham along with 43 year old unmarried housekeeper Ann Vincent and their 3 children and his son John.

Ann Vincent was born about 1803 in Keymer, Sussex.  When the 1861 census was recorded, Ann was a 54 year old agricultural labourer's widow and she was lodging in the home of 77 year old widower John Backshall at Courts Cottage in Cuckfield.  Her son George was also with her.

William Tullett and Phoebe Hills had 6 or 7 known children:

  1. Mary Tullett may have been part of this family.

  2. James Tullett was baptised on 23 November 1810 in Slaugham.  Did he marry Elizabeth Moore in 1837?  (They have their own page.)

  3. John Tullett was baptised on 14 June 1812 in Slaugham.  He was 28 years in 1841 and living with his father.  In 1851 he was an unmarried 37 year old agricultural labourer and he was living with his father.

  4. Eliza Tullett was baptised on 26 November 1815 in Slaugham.

  5. Jesse Tullett was baptised on 24 May 1818 in Slaugham.  Jesse died aged 29 years and was buried on 20 August 1848 in Crawley.

Jesse married Susannah Thornton on 3 October 1846 in Ifield.

Susannah was born on 10 April 1821 and baptised on 13 May 1821 in Crawley, and was the daughter of William Thornton and Sarah Charman.  At the time of her baptism her father was a labourer.  When the 1851 census was recorded she was a 29 year old widow and housekeeper in the home of 29 year old grocer John Knight in Crawley (his surname was transcribes as Kendle in the index).

After Jesse's death, his widow Suannah Tullett married Jesse Jenner on 30 October 1853 in Ifield.

Jesse and Susannah had the following child:

    1. Eliza Jessie Tulit was baptised on 17 October 1847 in Crawley.  The baptism register noted that her father was a grocer.  She died aged 37 years and her death was registered in the fourth quarter of 1884 in the Medway registration district as Eliza Jessie Chapman.  When the 1851 census was recorded she was 3 years old and living with the family of her 49 year old Uncle Henry Thornton at the The Street in Ifrield.  In 1861 she was a 13 year old servant and nursery girl in the home of Albert Taylor at 45-46 Trafalgar Street, Brighton.  Her place of birth was then given as Ifield.

      Eliza had the following son:

      1. Charles Jesse Tulett was born in the Horsham Union workhouse and baptised on 12 May 1872 in Horsham.  When the 1881 census was recorded he was 8 year old Charles Elcom and he was scholar.  He was then living in the home of 50 year old Jesse Jenner and his 59 year old wife Susannah, at West Green, Ifield.  Charles was described as their nephew.

Eliza Jessie Tullett married James Elcom in the fourth quarter of 1874 in the Dover registration district.

James died aged 43 years and his death was registered in the third quarter of 1878 in the Dover registration district.

William Tullett and Ann Vincent had 3 known children:
