William TULLETT (1785-1870)

and Ann CONSTABLE (c1788-1852)

William Tullett and Ann Constable married on 21 December 1809 in Slaugham, Sussex.  At the time they were both of Slaugham.  The witnesses to their marriage were John Baker, Mary Baker and John Hards.  (They were not my direct ancestors.  William was the nephew of my 5x Great Grandfather, John Tullett.)

William Tullett was baptised on 8 April 1785 in Cuckfield, Sussex.  He was the son of William Tullett (1738-1826) and Catherine Peters (c1739-1815).  He was buried on 20 December 1870 in Cuckfield.  William was an agricultural labourer.

Ann Constable was born about 1788 in Richmond, Surrey.  She was buried on 1 March 1852 in Cuckfield.

When the 1841 census was recorded William Tullett and his wife Ann were living in Cuckfield.  He was then said to be 50 years old and she 53.  Also with them was 20 year old keeper Joseph Heasman.

In 1851 the couple were living in Church Yard, Cuckfield.  William Tullett was then a 66 year old agricultural labourer and gave his place of birth as Cuckfield.  Ann was 63 and from Richmond, Surrey.  Also with them were 2 lodgers, namely 19 year old Henry Brigden and 18 year old James Brigden who were both bricklayer's labourers.

By 1861 William Tulet was a 75 year old widower and he was living in Back Lane, Cuckfield, along with 81 year old widow and housekeeper, Mary Mills, who had been born in Albourne.  One of his next door neighbours was the family of Churchman Field.

William Tullett and Ann Constable had 8 known children:

  1. Ann Tulett was baptised on 27 January 1811 in Bolney, Sussex.  She died aged 76 years and was buried on 17 December 1886 in Clayton.  The burial register noted that she was from Streat.

Ann married John Small by banns on 11 October 1835 in Clayton, Sussex.  The witnesses to their marriage were James Farncombe and Harriet Farncombe.

John was baptised on 1 May 1814 in Clayton and was the son of Bartholomew Small and Elizabeth Lindfield.  He died aged 46 years and was buried on 8 November 1860 in Clayton.  The burial register noted that he was from Clayton Street.

In 1841, John and Ann were living in Paternoster Row, Keymer.  They were both said to be 25 years old and he was an agricultural labourer.  With them were 3 children (Jane, Ann and John).

When the 1851 census was recorded the couple were living in Clayton Street, Clayton.  John was then a 37 year old parish clerk and gave his place of birth as Clayton.  Ann was 41 and said she was born in Slaugham.  With them on census night were 3 children (William, Bartholomew and Stephen).

By 1861, Ann was a 57 year old widow and gave her place of birth as Cuckfield.  She was living in Clayton along with 4 children (William, Bartholomew, Stephen and Harriet).

John and Ann had the following children:

    1. Jane Small was baptised on 22 May 1836 in Pyecombe, Sussex.  She was 5 years old in 1841.

    3. John Small was baptised on 8 December 1839 in Clayton.  He was a year old in 1841.  John died aged 2 years and was buried on 19 April 1842 in Clayton.  The burial register noted that he was from Clayton Street.

    4. William Small was baptised on 8 August 1841 in Keymer.  He was a 9 year old scholar in 1851.  In 1861 he was a 19 year old parish clerk.

  2. Harriet Tullett was baptised on 16 February 1812 in Cuckfield.

Harriet married James Farncombe on 13 November 1833 in Pyceombe, Sussex

  3. Mary Tullett was baptised on 10 December 1815 in Cuckfield, at which time her father was a labourer of Wigperry.  She married David Steele in 1834.  (They have their own page.)

  4. Edward Tullett was born about 1819 in Cuckfield.  He died in 1903.  So far I have not found his baptism, so can not be sure he was part of this family.  Unless he was the Edward Tullett born on 17 September 1814 and baptised on 6 November 1814 in Crawley, Sussex, but I don't think they were one and the same.

Edward married Susan Anscombe on 7 April 1841 in Cuckfield.  He was then a bachelor and labourer and she a spinster.  They were both of age and both of Cuckfield.  There fathers were named as William Tulett and John Anscombe.  The witnesses to their marriage were Joseph Holman and Sarah Tulett.

Susan was baptised on 29 September 1822 in Cuckfield and was the daughter of John Anscombe and Sarah.  She died aged 62 years in Clayton, Sussex and was buried on 18 January 1883 in Keymer, Sussex.

Edward and Susan had 10 known children:

Sarah married Joseph Holman on 22 October 1841 in Cuckfield.  He was a bachelor and labourer and she a spinster.  They were both of full age and both of Cuckfield.  The witnesses to their marriage were Walter Holman and Sarah Holman.
