William TULLETT (1738-1826)

and Catherine PETERS (c1739-1815)

William Tullett and Catherine Peters married by banns on 2 May 1773 in Slaugham, Sussex.  They were both of Slaugham and both made their marks.  The witnesses to their marriage were Richard Harding and Charles Colven who both signed their names.  (They were not my direct ancestors.  William was the brother of my 5x Great Grandfather, John Tullett.)

William Tullett was baptised on 12 March 1737/8 in Slaugham.  He was the son of Peter Tullet (c1700-1749) and Elizabeth Gratwick (1700-1786).  He died aged 92 years and was buried on 5 March 1826 in Cuckfield, Sussex.  On 25 May 1762 he was a witness to the marriage of John Stone and Mary Ellsey.

Catherine Peters was born about 1739.  She died aged 76 years and was buried on 16 August 1815 in Cuckfield.  The burial register recorded that she was the wife of William Tulet a labourer of Cut Hedges in Cuckfield.

William Tullett and Catherine Peters had 6 known children:

  1. William Tullett was baptised on 25 September 1773 in Slaugham.  He most probably died young.

  2. Edward Tullett was baptised on 28 July 1776 in Slaugham.  He may have been buried on either 24 March 1775 or 4 November 1781, in Slaugham.  The burial register on each occasion only records that Edward Tullett was buried and gives no further details.  He did have 2 cousins:  Edward Tullett born 1765 and Edward Tullett born in 1773.  Or he may have been buried on 20 February 1795 in Slaugham, when he was described as Edward Tullett a youngman from the workhouse.

  3. Peter Tullett was baptised on 21 July 1782 in Cuckfield.

  4. William Tullett was baptised on 8 April 1785 in Cuckfield.  He married Ann Constable in 1809.  (They have their own page.)

  5. Mary Tullett was baptised on 8 July 1787 in Cuckfield.

  6. Ann Tullett was baptised on 4 October 1789 in Cuckfield.

Did she marry Edward Miles by banns on 6 April 1813 in Brighton, Sussex?  He was a bachelor and she a spinster.

Edward and Ann had the following children:

    1. Edward Miles was born on 12 December 1814 and baptised on 29 January 1815 at the Independent Chapel of Lindfield and Ardingly.

    2. Ann Miles was born on 9 September 1817 and baptised on 26 October 1817 at Old Hall Chapel in Wivelsfield.

    3. Sarah Miles was born on 17 December 1819 and baptised on 23 January 1820 at the Independent Chapel of Lindfield and Ardingly.

    4. Mary Miles was born on 22 February 1822 and baptised on 24 March 1822 at the Independent Chapel of Lindfield and Ardingly.

    5. Esther Miles was born on 29 December 1824 and baptised on 25 March 1825 at the Independent Chapel of Lindfield and Ardingly.

Esther married Friend Field by banns on 25 April 1846 in Bolney.  He was a bachelor and labourer and she a spinster.  Their fathers were named as Churchman Field a farmer and Edward Mills a labourer.  The witnesses to their marriage were John Field and Sarah Mills.

As a widow Esther Field married widower Stephen Starley by banns on 28 August 1869 in Bolney.  He was a gardener.  Their fathers were named as John Starley and Edward Miles who were both labourers.  The witnesses to their marriage were John Field and Matilda Field.
