Walter TULLETT
(1836-1915)
and Emily GOACHER (1839-?)

Walter
Tullett and Emily Goacher married by banns on 10 January 1863 at
the parish church of St. George in West Grinstead, Sussex. He was then
a 26 year old bachelor and labourer, whilst Emily was a 24 year old spinster
and servant. The witnesses to the marriage were Allen Rapley
and Ellen Rapley (Walter's sister and brother-in-law). (They
were not my direct ancestors, but my mother's maiden name was Tullett and so
I am interested in all Tullett families, just to make sure I'm on the right
track with my own.)
Walter Tewlett
was baptised on 23 May 1836 in West Grinstead. He was the son of
William Tulet
(1799-1878) and
Charlotte Woodman (c1802-1886). He died in the second quarter
of 1915 in the Horsham registration district and his name was then recorded
as Walter Tullett.
Emily Goacher
was baptised on 27 June 1839 in Ashurst, Sussex. She was the daughter
of Henry Goacher (1797-1870) and Martha Mears (1806-1861).
The 1871 census
records that the family were living at Pot Haines House in West Grinstead
and Walter Tulett was a farm labourer. When the 1881
census was recorded the family were living at Bines Green, Martins Land,
Ashurst and Walter Tullett was an agricultural labourer. In
1891 they were living at Crouchers in West Grinstead and Walter Tullett
was an agricultural labourer. The couple and their son Harry were still
living at Crouches the time of the 1901 census and Walter Tullett was then
a labourer.
Walter Tullett and Emily Goacher
had 8 known children:
-
Emily Tullett
was baptised on 31 May 1863 in West Grinstead. She was an 8 year old
scholar in 1871. In 1881 she was a 17
year old cook/domestic servant in the home of William Powell Breach
at Newham House, White Horse Lane, Steyning, Sussex. She married
Philip Warner in about 1887.
-
Walter Tullett
was baptised on 29 July 1864 in West Grinstead. He died in 1940.
In 1871 he was a 6 year old scholar. When the 1881 census was recorded he was a 16 year old grocer's assistant
living in the home of his Uncle Allen Rapley. By 1901 he may
have still have been a grocer's assistant living in Lambeth, London along
with wife Elizabeth and 6 month old son, also named Walter.
As Walter Tulett he married Louisa Hill in the first quarter
of 1907 in the Newington registration district.
-
Lucy Tullett
was baptised on 28 July 1867 in West Grinstead. She was 4 years old
in 1871. At the time of the
1881 census she was a 13 year old general servant in the home of Edward
Ryder at 92 St. Stephens Avenue in London. In 1891 she was said
to be an unmarried 25 year old general servant in the home of Lional
Richard Goodson and his wife at 2 Mirvan Road in Lambeth (I think
that's address). She married George
Robert McCartney in about 1901 in Berkshire.
-
William
Tullett was baptised on 31 October 1869 in West Grinstead and buried
there on 17 April 1870, aged 7 months.
-
Charlotte
Martha Tullett was baptised on 26 February 1871 in West Grinstead.
The 1871 census records that she was 2 years old, but should probably read
2 months. She was a 10 year old scholar in 1881 and the eldest of her siblings
living at home. She married Arthur Coe on 2 October 1905 in
Battersea.
-
Alfred Tullett
was baptised on 28 September 1873 in West Grinstead. He was a 7 year
old scholar in 1881. In 1891 he was a 17 year old agricultural
labourer living at home with his parents and younger brother.
-
Harry Tullett
was baptised on 31 October 1875 in West Grinstead. He died in 1964.
He was a 5 year old scholar in 1881. When the 1901 census was
recorded he was a 24 year old labourer living at home with his parents. Harry married Emily Geal
in November 1904 in Partridge Green, Sussex.
-
Robert Tullett
was baptised on 5 January 1879 in West Grinstead. He was 2 years old
when the 1881 census was recorded. In 1891 he was a 12 year old
scholar. He married Jessie Howick
in 1903 in Brighton.
