Thomas William
TULLETT (1862-1911)
and Emma Charlotte GOBLE (1863-1951)

Thomas William Tullett and Emma Charlotte Goble were my Great
Grandparents. (Click
here to see their place in my
pedigree chart.) They married
by banns on 16 August 1884 at St. Nicolas in Portslade, Sussex. Thomas
a bachelor and Emma a spinster. They were both aged 22 years and were
both of Crown Road, Portslade. The witnesses were Edmund Goble
and Sarah Ward.
Thomas
William Tullett was born on 22 March 1862 in the Union Workhouse in
Cuckfield, Sussex. His name at birth was registered as Thomas
Tulett and he was the illegitimate son of
5
41
Catherine Tullett
(1836-1924). His father was believed to be
Thomas Setford
(1838-1905), who married Catherine in July 1862. He was baptised as
Thomas William Tulett on 1 June 1862 at the parish church of Cuckfield.
Tom was a labourer and gasworks stoker and may also have been a brickmaker.
He died on 19 March 1911 at 14 Ellen Street, Portslade-by-Sea, Sussex.
His cause of death was rupture of aneurism of innominate artery and an
inquest was held. My mother told me that he died in his sleep and that
his wife had not realised when she arose in the morning. She went
downstairs to prepare breakfast and when he didn't appear or respond to her
call, she went up and found him dead in bed. Mum also told me that
blood from the rupture had soaked through the pillow and mattress and formed
on the floor boards beneath the bed, and that no matter how many times Emma
tried scrubbing, the stain would not come out the wood.
Emma Charlotte Goble was born on 24 November 1863 at Newgate Lane,
Fareham, Hampshire. She was the eldest daughter and second child of
5
30
Edmund Goble
(c1841-1911) and
Lydia Pearson
(1837-1899). She was baptised on 13 August 1869 in Portslade.
She died on 10 May 1951 at 14 Ellen Street, Portslade-by-Sea. Her
cause of death was cerebral thrombosis and chronic hyperpiesia. Her
death was registered by her daughter I. E. Tullet, who
was of the same address and present at the death.
Thomas William Tullett and Emma Charlotte Goble had 10 known children:
-
Emma Charlotte Tullett was baptised on 6 September 1885 at St.
Nicolas, Portslade and died later that year.
-
Sarah Ann Tullett was born on 10 November 1886 and baptised at the
aged of 27 on 1 December 1913 at St. Andrew, Portslade. She was
confirmed at St. Andrew's church in 1913 at which time she was of Church Road and it
was noted in the margin of the confirmation book that she had left. My
mother tells me that she was in service in Welwyn Garden City in
Hertfordshire. Mum can not remember when Sarah died, but thinks she
was alive in 1950. Mum also tells me that Sarah was a very heavy
smoker, to which her mother Emma would say "if God had meant you to smoke,
you'd have been born with a chimney". Sarah did not marry but may have
been the mother of an illegitimate son (see
notes
below).
-
Lydia Tullett was born on 7 December 1888 and baptised on 26 November
1902 at St. Andrew, Portslade. She worked at Flynn's, Portslade where
she ironed clothes. My mum thinks she died on 3 March 1968, which
would seem to agree with her death registration in the first quarter of 1968
in the Worthing registration district. She did not marry.
-
Thomas William
Tullett, my Grandfather, was born on 20 March 1891 in
Portslade. He married
Annie Elise Stillaway
in 1920. (They have their own page.)
-
David Henry Tullett was born on 7 March 1893 and baptised on 11 March
1903 at St. Andrew in Portslade. He died aged 65 years and his death
was registered in the second quarter of 1958 in the Brighton registration
district.
David married Rhoda A. Penfold in the fourth quarter of 1915
in the Steyning registration district.
Rhoda Annie Penfold was born in the fourth quarter of 1896 in Brighton and was the daughter of
Charles Penfold (1857-?) and Annie (possible Annie Charman
who may have married Charles in the third quarter of 1895 in the Steyning
registration district as his second wife).
My mum told me
that David and her father Thomas were very alike and could have almost
passed as twins. The last time my mum remembers seeing her Uncle David
was at her father's funeral, when she said David looked very ill. My
mum believes Rhoda died after David.
David and Rhoda had 4 children:
Rhoda A. Tullett was born in the third quarter of 1916 in the
Steyning registration district.
Dorothy Olive Tullett was born on 13 July 1919 in the Steyning
registration district. She died aged 81 years in June 2001 in
Brighton. Dorothy married Chester M. Markham in the
third quarter of 1943 in the Hove registration district. Chester
Almer Markham was born on 6 October 1910 and died aged 75 years in July
1986 in the Hove registration district.
David H. Tullett was born in the fourth quarter of 1922 in the
Steyning registration district.
Gloria M. Tullett was born in the third quarter of 1930 in the
Steyning registration district.
-
Daisy
Isabel Tullett was born on 3 May 1897 and baptised on 11 March 1903 at
St. Andrew in Portslade. In 1912 at the age of 15 years she was
confirmed at St. Andrew's and it was noted in the confirmation book that she
attended regularly. She was then of 14 Ellen Street. Daisy, like
her sisters, did not marry. My mum told me that Daisy was once engaged
but called the wedding off when she was told by a friend that her boyfriend
had been seen with another woman. She worked at Flynn's in Portslade
where she dyed hats and ribbons to match. My mum thinks she died on 22 October 1977, which agrees
with her death registration in the fourth quarter of 1977 in the Hove
registration district.
-
Edmund Tullett was born on 14 September 1899 and baptised on 11 March
1903 at St. Andrew in Portslade. My mum thinks he died of throat
cancer. His death was registered in the first quarter of 1949 in the
Brighton registration district and he was then 49 years old. In 1914
at the age of 15 he was confirmed at St. Andrew's.
He was then of 14 Ellen Street.
Edmund married Matilda R. Murphy in the third quarter of
1924. She known to Mum as Mollie.
Mollie may have died in the 1970's. Mum told me that Mollie
had a good singing voice and that she had had her leg amputated.
Matilda Rose Murphy was born in the fourth quarter of 1904 in the
Steyning registration district.
Edmund and Mollie had 2 children:
Molly Rose Tullett was born on 1 November 1925 in the Steyning
registration district. She died aged 68 years in February 1994 in
Brighton. Molly married James F. Albrighton in the fourth quarter of 1945
in the Hove registration district.
Patrick E. Tullett was born in the second quarter of 1933 in
the Steyning registration district. He joined the RAF and had just
passed his exams when he was taken ill and diagnosed with a brain tumour and
died at the age of 23.
-
Emily Eva Tullett was born on 19 September 1901 and baptised on 11
March 1903 at St. Andrew in Portslade. My mum told me that Emily was
very religious and taught at the Baptist Chapel. She worked at
Montague Edwards, a chemist shop in Portslade, as a shop assistant.
She died of peritonitis on the 39th birthday; 19 September 1940. Mum
said she had refused to see a doctor. Emily was buried in the Victoria
Road cemetery in Portslade. She did not marry.
-
Ivy
Ellen Tullett was born on 15 January 1903, according to the baptism
register, but my mum says her birthday was the 16th, which is the date
recorded on her death certificate. Ivy was baptised on 11 March 1903
at St. Andrew in Portslade. On Palm Sunday, 13 April 1930, at the age
of 27 she was confirmed at St. Andrew. She was then living at 14 Ellen
Street. She did not marry and remained at home acting as housekeeper
to her mother. Her death was registered in the February 1990 in the
Hove registration district.
-
Samuel
Tullett was born on 29 July 1905 and baptised on 1 October 1905 at St.
Andrew in Portslade. Sam's death was registered in November 1990 in
the Worthing registration district.
Samuel married Emily Paine in 1928.
Samuel and Emily had 5 children.

NOTES
On 3 March 1912 an Albert Edward Tullett was baptised at St. Andrew
in Portslade. He had been born on 14 July 1911 and was the son of a
single woman of 14 Ellen Street. My mum had never heard of him and he
was never talked about, but given the choice between her Aunts Sarah and
Lydia as the possible mother, she thinks Albert was most likely to have been
the son of Sarah. My mum's Aunt Daisy was only 14 in 1911 so probably
too young.
My mum also told me that her father had warned his daughters that if they
became pregnant whilst unmarried he would disown them.
