Simeon TULLETT (1809-1891)

and Ann Tullett KNOWLES (c1816-1884)

Simeon Tullett and Ann Tullett Knowles married by banns on 28 May 1834 in Cuckfield, Sussex.  Simeon was a bachelor and Ann a spinster and they were both of Cuckfield.  The witnesses were William Tullett and Mary Ann Godsmark.    (They were not my direct ancestors.  Ann was the sister of my 2x Great Grandmother, Catherine Tullett (1836-1924), making her my 2nd Great Grand Aunt.  Simeon was my 2nd cousin 5x removed.)

Simeon Tullett was baptised on 28 May 1809 in Cuckfield.  He was the youngest son Peter Tullett (1760-1843) and Mary Pesket (c1764-1813).  He died aged 81 years in 1891.  He was an Agricultural Labourer.

Ann Tullett Knowles was born about 1816 in Cuckfield.  She was the illegitimate daughter of Mary Knowles (1797-1860), who in December 1816 married William Tulet (1795-1877).  She died aged 68 years in 1884.  She was mentioned as Ann Tullett Knowles in the 1836 will of her Grandfather John Knowles.

Simeon's Great Grandparents - Peter Toolet (?-1748) and Elizabeth Gratwick (c1705-1786) - were also probably Ann's 2x Great Grandparents.

The family were very unfortunate as 4 sons died very close together in October 1859 (buried 7th, 10th, 12th and 14th).  I would guess there had been an illness in the family.  At some point I will try and check a newspaper of the time to see if any epidemic had been reported in the Cuckfield area.

In 1841 the family were in Clayton; by 1851 they were at Ansty Cross, Cuckfield; 1861 Highlands, Cuckfield; and 1871 Borde Hill Cottage, Cuckfield.  In 1881 Simeon and Ann were back at Highlands along with 34 year boarder Amos Beard.

Simeon Tullett and Ann Tullett Knowles had 8 known children:

  1. Simeon Tullett was baptised on 19 October 1834 in Cuckfield.

Simeon married Frances Mitchell on 7 April 1855 in Cuckfield.  At the time of their marriage they were both of full age and both of Cuckfield.  Simeon was a bachelor and labourer.  Frances was a spinster.  The witnesses were Jesse Upton and Mary ? (can't read her surname).

Frances was baptised on 27 January 1833 in Cuckfield and was the daughter of John Mitchell (1802-?) and Martha Blanch.

In 1871 Simeon was a carpenter and the family were living at Gate Lodge, Cuckfield Place.  Simeon was still a carpenter in 1881 and the family were then living at Highlands, Cuckfield, along with Frances's widowed mother Martha Mitchell aged 79 years.

Simeon and Frances had 3 known children:

    1. Frances Ellen Tullett was baptised on 6 December 1857 in Cuckfield.

Frances married John Butcher in 1888.

John was born about 1864 in Maresfield.  He may have died before 1901.

    2. Simeon James Tullett was baptised on 5 June 1863 in Cuckfield.  He was a carpenter.  In the 1881 and 1901 census his name was recorded as James Tullett.  He may have married Elizabeth and they may have had a daughter Lily Tullett born about 1897 in Cuckfield.  A Simeon James Tullett was born in 1902.

    3. William Tullett was baptised on 5 June 1863 in Cuckfield.

  2. Mary Ann Tullett was baptised on 23 July 1837 in Cuckfield.  She died before 1881.

Mary Ann married Joseph Tomblin on 17 October 1863 in Cuckfield.  Joseph was then a bachelor and an engine driver of Bolney.  Mary Ann was a spinster of Cuckfield.  They were both of full age.  The witnesses were Simeon Tullett and Fanny Mitchell.

Joseph was baptised on 29 January 1832 in Barnock, Northamptonshire and was the son of James Tomblin and Sarah.  In 1861, Joseph was an unmarried 28 year old engine driver and he was lodging with Mary Ann's Uncle James Tullett.

In 1881 Joseph was a farmer of 30 acres living at Hazeldean Farm Cuckfield along with his 4 sons and housekeeper 73 year old widow Mary Russell.

Joseph and Mary Ann had 5 known children:

Eleanor married William Bennett on 28 March 1864 in Cuckfield.  They were both then of Cuckfield and of full age.  William was a bachelor and a painter.  Eleanor was a spinster.  The witnesses to their marriage were Peter Bennett, Henry Bennett and Mary Ann Tomblin.

William was born about 1835 in Cuckfield and was the son of Henry Bennett.

In 1881 William was the Parish Clerk and Sexton living at Church Yard Cottages, Church Street, Cuckfield, along with his wife and children.

William and Eleanor had 5 known children:

    1. Annie Bennett was baptised on 7 October 1866 in Cuckfield.
