Richard TULLETT (1827-1913)

and Caroline HILLS (1830-1904)

Richard Tullett and Caroline Hills married in the third quarter of 1851 in the Horsham registration district of Sussex.  (They were not my direct ancestors.)

Richard Tulitt was baptised on 21 October 1827 in West Grinstead, Sussex.  He was the son of Peter Tulett (1792-?) and Elizabeth Worsfield (c1795-?).  He died aged 86 years and his death was registered in the fourth quarter of 1913 in the Horsham registration district.  When the 1841 census was recorded he was 14 years old and living with his parents and elder sister, Caroline, at Monks Gate Common, Nuthurst.  His father was then a sawyer.  At the time of the 1851 census he was an unmarried 23 year old agricultural labourer living with his parents at Monks Common.  (Another Richard Tullett, born in 1826 in West Grinstead, married Caroline Wadey in 1847.)

Caroline Hills was born in Nuthurst, Sussex and baptised on 4 April 1830 in Horsham, Sussex.  She was the daughter of Richard Hills (c1800-?) and Hester Tyler (1810-?).  She died aged 74 years and her death was registered in the third quarter of 1904 in the Horsham registration district.  When the 1851 census was recorded she was an unmarried 21 year living with her parents at Hammer in Lower Beeding, Sussex.  Her father was then a labourer.  Caroline's maternal grandparents were John Tyler and Esther Dinnage.

The couple and their 3 children were living at Monks Common, Nuthurst in 1861 and Richard was a sawyer.  In 1871 Richard and Caroline and 6 sons were still living in Nuthurst and he was still a sawyer.  In 1881 the couple and 5 children were living at Monks Common.  The 1891 census records that Richard and Caroline together with their youngest 2 sons were living at what looks like 3 Thrift Cottage in Nuthurst.  In 1901 the couple were living alone at 3 Thrift Cottage and Richard was then a 73 year old wood sawyer.

Richard Tullett and Caroline Hills had 8 known children:

  1. Luke Tullett was born in the first quarter of 1854 in Lower Beeding.  He died aged 52 years and his death was registered in the second quarter of 1906 in the West Derby registration district of Lancashire.  He was a 7 year old scholar at the time of the 1861 census.  In 1871 he was a 17 year old gardener.

  2. Esther Tullett was born in the fourth quarter of 1856 in Lower Beeding.  She was a 4 year old scholar in 1861.  When the 1871 census was recorded she was a 14 year old nurse girl and domestic servant in the home of Thomas Worsfold at Northland Cottage in Nuthurst.  In 1881 she was an unmarried 24 year old dressmaker living at home with her parents and younger siblings.

  3. Peter Tullett was born in the second quarter of 1860 in Nuthurst.  He was a year old when the 1861 census was recorded.  In 1871 he was an 11 year old scholar.  When the 1881 census was recorded he was an unmarried 21 year old footman and domestic servant at Holbrook in Horsham.

  4. Mark Tullett was born in the fourth quarter of 1862 in Nuthurst.  He was an 8 year old scholar in 1871.  In 1881 he was an 18 year old agricultural labourer.  When the 1891 census was recorded he was a 28 year old married, brewer's labourer living alone at 19 Block H, Peabody Buildings in the St. Saviours district of London.

Mark married Elizabeth Newman in the first quarter of 1901 in the Malling registration district of Kent.

Elizabeth was born about 1860 in Plaxtol, Kent.

When the 1901 census was recorded the couple were living at the Rose and Crown, Sheet Hill in Wrotham, Kent and Mark was a beer retailer and fruit grocer.  Also with them on census were Mark's 2 sons, Elizabeth's son and 48 year old lodger, Adam Newman.

In 1911 Mark and Elizabeth were living in Plaxtol, Sevenoaks, Kent.  He was then a 48 year old beer retailer and gave his place of birth as Nuthurst.  Elizabeth was 51 years old and had been born in Plaxtol.  They had been married for 10 years and had had no children.  With the couple on census night were Mark's son Thomas, and 2 boarders, namely 18 year old Thomas Kennard and George Sparks aged 13.

    Mark had 2 known sons:

    1. Thomas Frederick Tullett was born about 1892 in Southwark, London.  He was 9 years old when the 1901 census was recorded.  In 1911 he was a 19 year old labourer on a farm.

    2. Richard Stephen Tullett was born about 1897 in Bermondsey, London.  He was 4 years old in 1901.

  5. John Worsfield Tullett was born in the fourth quarter of 1865 in Nuthurst.  In 1871 he was a 5 year old scholar.  He was a 15 year old groom in 1881.

  6. Matthew Richard Tullett was born in the second quarter of 1868 in Nuthurst.  In 1871 he was 2 years old.  The 1881 census records that he was 12 year old Richard M. Tullett and that he was a scholar.  In 1891 he was 23 year old Richard and he was an unmarried bricklayer's labourer.

  7. Andrew Paul Tullett was born in the second quarter of 1870 in Nuthurst.  He died in 1951.  When the 1871 census was recorded he was 11 months old.  In 1881 he was a 10 year old scholar.  He was a 20 year old life insurance agent in 1891.

Andrew Paul married Emily Bull in first quarter of 1896 in the Stepney registration district.

Emily was born about 1874 in Bow, London.

When the 1901 census was recorded the couple and their 3 children were living at 69 Coutts Road, Mile End, London and Andrew was an electrician.

Andrew and Emily had the following known (to me) children:

    1. Archibald William Tullett was born in the fourth quarter of 1896 in Poplar, London.  He was 4 years old in 1901.  He married Ivy K. Austin in the third quarter of 1921 in the Ticehurst registratrion district of Sussex.

    2. Cissie Beatrice M. Tullett was born in the second quarter of 1898 in Chiswick, London.  She was 3 years old in 1901.

    3. Edith Alice Tullett was born in the first quarter of 1901 in Bow, London.  At the time of the 1901 census she was 2 months old.

  8. Alice Tullett was born in the second quarter of 1870 in Nuthurst.  She may have died as an infant as she was not with her parents at the time of the 1871 census.
