Peter TULLETT (1760-1843)

and Mary PESKET (c1764-1813)

Peter Tullett and Mary Pesket married on 17 October 1786 in Hurstpierpoint.  At the time of their marriage Peter was of Slaugham and Mary of Hurstpierpoint.  (They were not my direct ancestors.  Peter was my 1st cousin 6x removed.)

Peter Tullett was baptised on 8 April 1760 in Slaugham, Sussex.  He was the son of Peter Tullett (1732-?) and Mary Peter.  Peter was buried on 14 November 1843 in Cuckfield, Sussex.

Mary Pesket was born about 1764.  She died aged 49 years and was buried on 26 November 1813 in Cuckfield.

When the 1841 census was recorded, 80 year old Peter Tulett was living at Ansty Cross, Cuckfield and he was an agricultural labourer.  Also with him on census night was the family of his son James, 40 year old Henry Purvey and his children 14 year old Sarah Purvey, William Purvey 12, James Purvey and 7 year old Alfred Purvey, and 25 year old Stephen Boots.

Peter Tullett and Mary Pesket had 11 known children:

  1. Elizabeth Tullett was baptised on 4 March 1787 in Cuckfield.

Elizabeth married John Dunton on 15 March 1808 at All Saints in Lewes, Sussex.

John was baptised on 22 November 1784 in Hurstpierpoint, Sussex and was the son of Richard Dunton and Sarah.

John and Elizabeth had 4 known children:

    1. Katherine Dunton was baptised on 28 May 1809 in Bolney, Sussex.

    3. Mary Dunton was baptised on 2 April 1815 in Bolney.

    4. Eliza Dunton was baptised on 4 October 1818 in Bolney.

Eliza married Henry Lelliott on 9 February 1841 in Brighton.

Henry was born about 1817 in Edburton, Sussex and was the son of John Lelliott (1772-?) and Elizabeth Carter (c1777-?).

  2. Ann Tullett was baptised on 14 June 1789 in Cuckfield.  She died aged 10 years and was buried on 3 February 1800 in Cuckfield.

Martha Tullett was baptised on 18 May 1794 in Cuckfield.  Did she marry Thomas Thornton on 23 September 1821 in Crawley, or perhaps Stephen Green on 27 May 1827 in Slaugham?  Two Martha Tullett's were baptised in Crawley:  1 September 1793 daughter of Charles Tullett (1748-1823) and Rhoda Mitton (c1749-1828); and 26 June 1796 daughter of John Tullett (1751-?) and Ann.

James married twice, firstly to Susannah Heasman by banns on 26 August 1825 in Bolney.  The witnesses to their marriage were Isaac Heasman and Caroline Dunton.

Susannah was baptised on 15 June 1806 in Bolney and was the daughter of William Heasman and Elizabeth.  She was buried on 18 August 1844 in Cuckfield.

On 16 December 1826 a removal order was issued to James and Susannah Tullet from Hurstpierpoint to Cowfold, or vice versa.

James then married Elizabeth Burtenshaw by banns on 6 October 1850 in Bolney.  He was then a widower and labourer, and Elizabeth was a spinster.  Their fathers were named as Peter Tullett and John Burtenshaw who were both labourers.  The witnesses to their marriage were Simeon Tullett and Anne Tullett.

Elizabeth was baptised on 11 May 1828 in Keymer and was the daughter of John Burtenshaw and Mary Anne White.

When the 1851 census was recorded, James was a 49 year old agricultural labourer and his wife Elizabeth was 22.  They were living in Yew Tree Cottage, Bolney with his daughter.  In 1861, the couple and their young son were living at Tithe Farm in Bolney and James was a 59 year old farmer of 6 acres.  Elizabeth was 32.  Also with the family on census night was unmarried 28 year old Joseph Tomblin who was an engine driver from Northamptonshire.
