Peter TULLET
(c1700-1749)
and Elizabeth GRATWICK (c1705-1786)

Peter Tullet
and Elizabeth Gratwick were my 6x Great Grandparents. (Click
here
to see their place in my pedigree chart.) They married on 3 November
1726 in Cowfold, Sussex. He was then of Slaugham, Sussex.
Peter Tullet's
date and place of birth/baptism are uncertain. He may have been
baptised on 1 February 1703/4 in Horsham, Sussex and have been the son of
Peter Toolet
(1675-?) and Mary
Locket (1679-?). Or he may have been the son of
Edward Tullett
and Martha
Mitchel who married on 9 February 1691 in Ifield, which I think is
more likely. Or he may have been the son of
John Tullett
(1654-?) and Phillippa (c1660-1736) who married before 1683.
(See notes below.)
Peter may have been buried on 9 December 1749 in Slaugham, Sussex.
Elizabeth
Gratwick may have been born about 1705. There were many Gratwicks
in Cowfold, but I have not found that an Elizabeth was baptised there
between 1700 and 1710. Nor does anything appear in the IGI or the
British Vital Records. She may have been buried on 12 January 1786 in
Slaugham as Elizabeth Toolet an aged widow.
Peter Tullet
and Elizabeth Gratwick had 10 known children:
-
Mary Tillet was baptised on 20 April 1727 in Slaugham.
As
Mary Toolet she may have married John Comber by banns on 20 April
1758 in Horsham, Sussex. He was then a husbandman and they were both
of Horsham.
John may have been baptised on 30 September 1727 in Horsham
and have been the son of Henry Comber and Elizabeth Burnell.
John and Mary may have had the following children:
-
John Comber was baptised on 16 June 1765 in Horsham.
-
Thomas Comber was baptised on 10 April 1768 in Horsham.
-
Elizabeth Tullett was baptised on 9 January 1728/9 in Slaugham and
buried there on 10 January 1749.
-
Sarah Tullett was baptised on 13 January 1730/1 in Slaugham.
Only her father's name was recorded in the baptism register. She was
buried in Slaugham on 24 June 1743, and the burial register recorded that
she was the daughter of Peter Tullett.
-
Peter Tullet
was baptised on 10 February 1731/2 in Slaugham. He married
Mary Peter in
1757. (They have their own page.)
-
John Tullett,
my 5x Great Grandfather, was baptised on 23 January 1733/4 in Slaugham.
He married
Elizabeth Michell in 1760. (They have their own page.)
-
Edward Tullett
was baptised on 1 February 1735/6 in Slaugham. He married
Elizabeth Whiting
in 1760. (They have their own page.)
-
William Tullett
was baptised on 12 March 1737/8 in Slaugham. He married
Catherine Peters
in 1773. (They have their own page.)
-
Phillas Tullett was baptised on 30 September 1739 in Slaugham.
Only her father's name was recorded in the baptism register.
As
Phyllis Toullet she married John Budd on 25 October 1760
in Lancing, Sussex.
-
Samuel Tullett was baptised on 24 April 1741 in Slaugham.
Samuel
may have married Maria, but I have been unable to find their
marriage.
Samuel and Maria may have been the parents of:
-
Samuel Tulet was baptised on 5 April 1786 in Cuckfield, Sussex aged
14 years. The baptism register records that he was born on 18th inst.
He may have married Sarah West by banns on 18 September 1798 in
Cuckfield. He was a bachelor and she a spinster and they were both of
Cuckfield.
-
Jane Tullet was baptised on 27 July 1746 in
Slaugham. (I think I must have picked up her baptism from the Bishop's
Transcripts, as there is a gap in the Slaugham baptism register between 10
January 1745 and 2 April 1749.)
Jane married John Longhurst by
licence on 20 December 1767 in Slaugham. They were both then of
Slaugham. He signed his name whilst she made her X mark. The
witnesses were William Habe and
Alice Mitchell.
John was baptised on 13 June 1731 in Slaugham and was the son of
William Longust and Rachell Browne.
John and Jane had 3
known children:
-
William Longust was baptised on 23 April 1768 in Slaugham. As
William Longhurst he may have married Sarah Harwood by banns
on 19 December 1791 in Horsham. However, William was then said to be
of Ashstead, Surrey. Sarah was of Horsham.
-
John Longhurst was baptised on 28 March 1773 in Slaugham. As
Jno Longhurst of Balcombe he may have married Frances Parsons of
Slaugham by banns on 15 January 1797 in Slaugham.
-
Elizabeth Longhurst was baptised on 15 June 1777 in Slaugham.
She married Philip Weston by banns on 21 July 1798 in Horsham.
She was then a spinster and he a widower and they were both of Horsham.

said manor, and the said Charles Bartley.
Where do Edward and Peter fit into the
puzzle? I think the Peter is the Peter who married Elizabeth
Gratwick - they named a son Edward in 1735. I infer from
the above deeds, that Edward was senior to Peter, and
that Edward died between 1729 and 1737. Therefore, could
Edward have been the father of Peter? Or was he an elder
brother or uncle? Clearly lots more untangling to do.
Edward Toolet and Ann were the parents
of:
-
Charity Toolet was baptised on 25 July 1686 in
Cowfold. Her parents were then of St. Leonard's forest in Beeding.
She may have married Henry Wady on 20 February 1725/6 in Bolney,
Sussex. She was then of Cowfold.
Did Edward then marry Martha Mitchell on 9
February 1691/2 in Ifield, Sussex?
Alice Mitchell was a witness to
the marriage of Jane
Tullett and
John Longhurst on 20 December 1767 in Slaugham. As Alice
Martin she had married John Mitchell by banns on 11 October 1767
in Slaugham. He was then of Cuckfield and she of Slaugham. She
was born and baptised as Ealce Marten on 18 January 1742/3 in Slaugham and was the daughter of William Marten and Mary Renals.
Alice was buried in Cuckfield on 8 April 1828. John may have been
baptised on 19 May 1745 in Cuckfield and have been the son of John
Mitchell and Mary.
