James TULLETT (1779-1860)

and Mary CARPENTER (1780-1860)

James Tullett and Mary Carpenter married on 23 November 1812 in Ditchling, Sussex.  (They were the 3x Great Grandparents of David Fyson.)

James Tullett was baptised on 7 February 1779 in Nuthurst, Sussex.  He was the son of Edward Tullett (1736-1803) and Elizabeth Whiting (1740-1793).  He was an Agricultural Labourer.  He died aged 80 years at Ditchling Common and was buried on 1 March 1860 in Ditchling.

Mary Carpenter was baptised on 19 November 1780 in Nuthurst.  She was the daughter of John Carpenter and Mary.  She died aged 78 years at Ditchling Common and was buried on 25 March 1860 in Ditchling.

When the 1841 census was recorded James and Mary were living on Ditchling Common and they were both said to be 60 years old.  With them were Mary Tullett 25, James Tulett, 20 and William Tulett 60.  The 3 men were all agricultural labourers.

In 1851 the couple along with their daughter Mary and James's brother William were living in Ditchling.  James was a 72 year old agricultural labourer and Mary was 71.  His brother was a 73 year old agricultural labourer and all 3 said they were born in Horsham.

James Tullett and Mary Carpenter had 3 known children:

  1. John Tullett was baptised on 19 February 1815 in Wivelsfield, Sussex.  He died aged 33 years and was buried on 8 March 1848 in Ditchling.

Did he marry Emma Fuller before 1843?

When the 1851 census was recorded Emma Tullett, widow aged 30 and born in Lindfield, Sussex, together with 2 sons David Tullett aged 6 and William Tullett aged 4, were living in North Street, Ditchling in the home of Emma's parents Thomas Fuller and Elizabeth.  However, her father's age was recorded as 45 years and her mother as 60 years, so either the census is wrong or Thomas may have been her step father.

  2. Mary Tullett was baptised on 19 May 1816 in Wivelsfield.  She died unmarried aged 54 years in the Workhouse and was buried on 4 April 1871 in Ditchling.  She was said to be 25 years old in 1841.  In 1851 she was an unmarried 34 year old housekeeper to her parents and Uncle William Tullett.  The census recorded that she was born in Ditchling.  The 1861 census recorded that she was an unmarried 45 year old and lodging with the family of 23 year old John Fuller on Ditchling Common.

  3. James Tullett was baptised on 18 January 1818 in Wivelsfield.  He married Jane Ashdown (c1821-?) in 1842.  (They have their own page.)
